You can read it in the news, and I see it in the courthouse.
Ken is trying to juggle this criminal case and the damaging revelations about his own office. The prosecutor has put me on trial, but it is his own office that is getting much of the scrutiny.

This is only the second day of my trial here, and Charles Bakaly, who became Starr's spokesman last spring after the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke, abruptly resigned yesterday. His resignation came after Starr asked the Justice Department to investigate Bakaly in connection with a news leak - a front-page story in The New York Times that said Starr had concluded the president could legally be indicted while still in office.

Do you remember that sham of a trial last November over the Zubin Mehta thing ?
I was acquitted on all charges.
Well, in an extraordinary show of sympathy, two jurors from the panel which acquitted me in Los Angeles have flown to Little Rock to attend my trial and show their support.

Mark, my lawyer, and I have stated that the Zubin Mehta case was only brought by local prosecutors because of pressure from Starr's office. So, Starr is going down again on this one !

Mark said this is Hickman Ewing's last hurrah. Ewing is Starr's mad dog deputy who is overseeing the trial. Mark also said that he has the jury ready to acquit.

I want all of you to meet some of the members on my jury:
First there is Susan Bradway. She is 28, and a hospital dietitian. She said she thinks I am "gutsy" and that she admires me for standing up for what I believe in. Then she told everybody that she wouldn't want to be where I am right now. Then she said, and get this, the money spent by Starr on his investigations is excessive and, we have to wrap it up.

Next there is Jeffrey May, he is 35, and he is a farmer. His opinion of Starr is, "I wouldn't want him mad at me." He's got that right.

Next is Lela Jones. She is 35, and a machine operator. This goes to show you what a small world this is. When I was in the Pulaski County jail, I shared a cell with Lela's sister. By the way, they serve a mean pepper steak in the Pulaski County jail.

Latly, the is Charles Adams. He is 61, and he is retired. He is a big fan of the Geraldo Rivera. As you all know, Geraldo is a forceful advocate for my innocence and was in the courtroom. The jurors could see Geraldo hugging me and several of my supporters.

I was so proud of Mark, my lawyer during his cross-examination of the first two government witnesses. He wondered aloud why Starr left me "languishing in jail" after a judge found her in contempt for refusing his order to testify. He complained that members of my family were "dragged" before the grand jury.

This trial will be the end of Ken Starr's rein of terror !

My defense starts today and now the world is going to see what it is all about. First we are going to put Deputy Independent Counsel W. Hickman Ewing Jr. on the stand to expose the evil tactics of Starr's office. We are even thinking about putting old Ken himself on the stand to grill him the way he has grilled so many before.

Just to give you an example of the Starr tactics, prosecutors from the Office of the Independent Counsel have put Hillary Rodham Clinton on their witness list in the coming trial of her former law partner, Webster Hubbell. And they say they have not been "out to get her ?" Give me a break ! That is all The Starr gang wants to do. The raw spectacle of calling the First Lady of the United States as a witness in a public trial would not come without risk for Starr prosecutors. The move could backfire and could quickly turn into a public relations disaster... if it turns out that Mrs. Clinton has nothing more to offer.

We will argued and we will show that I didn't want to answer questions because overzealous prosecutors were trying to force me to give false testimony against the president and first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

In fact did you know that Ken Starr and his thugs paid witnesses to lie in front of the Grand Jury ? Yes, in fact the prosecutors gave financial assistance, from Starr's office, to their two chief witnesses, James McDougal, my late ex-husband my God rest his soul, and David Hale. Hale got at least $60,000 for living expenses and prosecutors helped arrange housing for Jim until he went to prison, where he died.
Died in Jail. Ken Starr put him in jail and there he died ! Think about that for a minute, then tell me Ken Starr is not EVIL !

Well his days at that job are numbered because Attorney General Janet Reno told Congress Wednesday that the independent counsel law was "structurally flawed" and should be allowed to expire when its authorization runs out in June. "structurally flawed ?" Well Janet, that is putting it mildly.

Former Federal Prosecutor Cynthia Alksne is an intelligent woman. She says intelligent things. But when she said that she believed Juanita Broaddrick’s rape allegation because Broaddrick is not suing the President and presumably has no motivation to lie, she betrayed a vast capacity for extreme, unprecedented gullibility.

“I’m with you on that one”, Marcia Clark confidently proclaimed, as they used their mutual ignorance to suggest that the President of the United States is a rapist. The claim that there exists no motivation for Juanita Broaddrick to lie is beyond absurd and does not even merit contemplation amongst reasonably informed people, but how dare we be so presumptuous. The Alksne & Clark road show has even denied us that particular luxury.

Regardless, we are not going to waste time opining the merit of Broaddrick’s "trained seal" performance on national television. We will simply stick to the basic, undeniable facts. First and foremost, there is the clear record of targeting Clinton associates and threatening them with prosecution unless they "cook the beans" and the pre-ordained recipe is criminal behavior -fraud, rape, murder, it doesn’t matter as long as it sells.

Secondly, anyone who is not publicly threatened with criminal prosecution or is granted immunity from prosecution tends to "spill the beans", but it is ultimately the recipe, not the rhetoric, which betrays truth. In other words, when Broaddrick publicly claimed that she had committed perjury, she had obviously weighed the pros and cons of the admission, whether it was true or false, and had determined her own private benefit.

Could somebody have threatened to prosecute her for tax fraud or some other crime if she refused to spill the cooked beans? Was the claim that she was a perjurer a plea bargain? -admit it and we will not prosecute. Isn’t that the pattern we have seen over and over again. Does Marcia Clark know why Starr would indict Julie Hiatt Steele for perjury and give Juanita Broaddrick a "get out of jail free" card? Is anybody in fact stupid enough to ignore the enormous, prosecutorial pressure that is placed upon Clinton acquaintances who refuse to lie about the President of the United States? What planet do Cynthia and Marcia inhabit?

For starters, there is an entire cabal of Clinton haters who hand out money and engage illegal, covert operations, whose only aim is to pawn off timely allegations of the sort that Broaddrick promoted. Did anybody miss the fact that Broaddrick herself is a criminal, of the sort that Clinton’s enemies exploit?

If one chooses to believe Broaddrick’s unfounded allegations, she is a self-admitted perjurer. If one appreciates the obstruction of justice that the campaign to destroy Clinton’s credibility involves, her criminal culpability is even more treacherous, more malignant, and given the prosecutorial trend to grant Clinton trashers immunity, understandably self serving.

Why does Cynthia and Marcia ignore the compelling evidence which strongly suggests that Juanita Broaddrick’s allegations are understandably manufactured? Having failed to convince people that the President was responsible for the murder of Vincent Foster, Clinton’s enemies rolled the rape allegation dice and won -the media took the bait and the media will choke on it.

Let the media tell you that Broaddrick’s allegations are credible and that they deserve a presidential reaction. Let them say whatever they want. In the final analysis, the people of the United States are fair and intelligent. They are not stupid journalists or stupid Federal Prosecutors. Responsible journalists and responsible Federal Prosecutors are clearly smart enough to ignore politically motivated pressure tactics. EXCLUSIVE: STARR TEAM PLANNING TO CALL FIRST LADY IN HUBBELL TRIAL

WASHINGTON -- Prosecutors from the Office of the Independent Counsel have put Hillary Rodham Clinton on their witness list in the coming trial of her former law partner, Webster Hubbell, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.

The trial is scheduled to begin June 14.

"She's on the working witness list," one case insider told the DRUDGE REPORT in Washington. "[The OIC] is quietly preparing its court case."

Mrs. Clinton is referred to 36 times in the fraud indictment filed against Hubbell.

The raw spectacle of calling the First Lady of the United States as a witness in a public trial would not come without risk for Starr prosecutors.

"The move could backfire and could quickly turn into a public relations disaster... if it turns out that Mrs. Clinton has nothing more to offer," said a source directly involved in case planning.

"She has not been very helpful solving the Castle Grande riddle before the grand jury."

One option actively being discussed inside of Starr's office, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned, is to call Mrs. Clinton for fresh videotaped testimony.

"Instead of dragging her into public court, she may be given the option of appearing as a witness on tape, much like the president did in the original Whitewater trial in Little Rock," said the case insider.

It is not clear if Mrs. Clinton has been notified that her name is on an active witness list for the Hubbell trial.

The insider cautioned that Ken Starr himself has not yet "completely signed-off" on calling Mrs. Clinton, but prosecutors chosen to argue the case in court have become convinced that she is a key witness and she will be subpoenaed to appear.

The development comes just days after portions of Mrs. Clinton's grand jury testimony were played in the Susan McDougal contempt case.

Well anyway, that's my two cents worth. I think you are overreacting to LVD...but I don't really want to argue about it since Kluge and I just bought a new house last week and are currently both putting in 12 to 14 hour days making the thing liveable.

And also, on the Susan issue: Others are not being imprisoned for a few days for the same thing. Just a couple of years ago I knew a mother who did four years in jail before she was finally ordered released for not telling the whereabouts of her daughter of whom she did not have custody, but whom she believed was being molested by her ex-husband. Susan has made a choice, just as that mother did (who, by the way, was an M.D.) and she has the satisfaction of knowing that she is upholding a "good cause", but that is what jailtime for refusal to follow a judge's orders has always carried as a reward for the the penalty. If she believes in her cause, she shouldn't mind sitting there for awhile... although, frankly, I think she looks a bit foolish sitting in jail giving up a significant portion of her life in defense of a criminal (albeit a famous one).

3.16 p.m. ET (2016 GMT) LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Kenneth Starr's top deputy testified today that at one point in the Whitewater investigation he drafted a proposed indictment of Hillary Rodham Clinton and showed it to others in the independent counsel's office.

Called as the lead-off defense witness in Susan McDougal's trial, W. Hickman Ewing Jr. also testified that he "had problems'' with some of President Clinton and Mrs. Clinton's statements to investigators in April 1995.

Ewing said he drafted the indictment against the first lady sometime after September 1996 and was not more specific. Ewing said it was not unusual for a federal prosecutor to draft an indictment whether or not charge is ever brought.

As a prosecutor, he said, "You're always thinking about ... what possible crime could it be.''

Witnesses undermine Starr case against Susan McDougal

The trial of Susan McDougal on criminal contempt and obstruction of justice charges continued this week in Little Rock, Arkansas with prosecutors from the Office of Independent Counsel increasingly on the defensive. McDougal, who has already served nearly two years in prison for two previous Whitewater-related convictions, faces yet a a third trial which could result in a prison term of 10 years and $750,000 in fines.

Much of the week's proceedings consisted of a series of prosecutors working for Kenneth Starr and grand jurors testifying that they had not conspired to force McDougal to lie about Bill and Hillary Clinton, her former partners in the Whitewater Development Co.

Given that admitting such conduct would amount to confessing to the felony crime of subornation of perjury, the denials were predictable. But it was nonetheless extraordinary that the prosecution felt it necessary to preempt the defense argument that McDougal refused to testify because she believed the Starr investigation was a politically motivated inquiry and that prosecutors would indict her for perjury if she did not give them anti-Clinton testimony.

McDougal and her late husband James were partners with the Clintons in the failed Whitewater real estate development. She was convicted and sent to prison for receiving an illegal $300,000 loan in the 1980s from a federally backed fund headed by former Little Rock judge David Hale. Starr's prosecutors claim that Bill Clinton, then governor of Arkansas, lobbied for the loan, and that part of the loan was used to retire his Whitewater debts.

The loan was part of a complex scheme engineered by James McDougal to sustain his failing Madison Guaranty Savings and Loan and other real estate developments. There is no evidence that any of the funds went to Whitewater or that either of the Clintons profited from or was aware of the arrangement. This flimsy case has nonetheless served as the launching pad for the five-year-long campaign of political destabilization waged by extreme right-wing groups against the White House.

McDougal's attorney Mark Geragos was able to elicit damaging admissions from several witnesses called by the prosecution. FBI agent Michael Pertkus, who testified at length about the web of financial dealings by James McDougal, conceded that he would not have recommended bringing charges over Whitewater against either Bill or Hillary Clinton on the basis of the testimony of James McDougal and David Hale, both of whom were convicted con men and admitted perjurors.

Denise Castleberry, a former grand juror who said she had "warm feelings" about Starr's prosecutors, admitted that they had not told the grand jury of material assistance provided to James McDougal and David Hale in return for their cooperation. McDougal was provided with housing, while Hale was paid $60,000 for living expenses by Starr's office--a fact that surely would be significant in any objective evaluation of his testimony.

A Ft. Smith, Arkansas grand jury is currently investigating payments made to Hale--allegedly with the knowledge of Starr's office--by right-wing groups financed by billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife. These groups include the Arkansas Project, which was set up by the magazine American Spectator to dig up dirt on the Clintons.

A second grand juror, Marsha High, revealed that only 12 of the 19 grand jurors present at an April 1998 session had voted in favor of reaffirming the court order for Susan McDougal to testify. This is the order which she is now charged with violating. Since 15 votes are required to bring a grand jury indictment, Geragos said that High's admission, which she confirmed from her contemporaneous notes, might call into question the legality of the entire proceeding.

As the culmination of the prosecution's case, associate independent counsel Mark Barrett played 30 minutes of videotape of deposition testimony from Hillary Clinton. Mrs. Clinton was questioned under oath about Whitewater for the sixth time on April 25, 1998, less than one week after Susan McDougal refused to testify. Barrett contrasted Hillary Clinton's willingness to answer questions with McDougal's defiant refusal.

Leaving aside the question whether the Clintons themselves would have been better served, legally and politically, by echoing Susan McDougal's defiance, any objective examination of the transcript of Hillary Clinton's testimony refutes the prosecution's argument. Mrs. Clinton was asked a series of convoluted, and in some instances nearly incomprehensible, questions about 15-year-old financial transactions, documents, Rose Law Firm billing records, and conversations. To each inquiry she responded either that she did not know what the prosecutor was talking about, had no personal involvement, or could not remember minute details of these long-ago events.

It is perfectly understandable why a woman in Susan McDougal's position, facing the power of the Office of Independent Counsel without the protection of the White House and a battery of lawyers, would refuse to undergo such an interrogation.

There was another purpose, and a transparently political one, for the introduction of Mrs. Clinton's testimony. While this evidence had little relevance to the trial, it put the previously secret videotape into the public record, to provide ammunition for the ongoing political campaign against the Clinton White House.

Once again, at least for a day, the American media was full of reports linking the Clintons to allegedly illegal financial dealings in Arkansas, focusing on a $27,600 cashier's check, and a $5,081 personal check from Susan McDougal bearing the notation "Payoff Clinton." The cashier's check was not endorsed by Clinton and in 1996 grand jury testimony he denied any knowledge of it.

Asked if he had ever referred to the Clintons as "crooks and liars," W. Hickman Ewing Jr. said, "I believe I made that statement in-house . . . [but] I don't believe I used the L-word or the C-word. I certainly expressed internally that I had problems with some of their answers."

Subpoenaed as the leadoff defense witness at the trial of Susan McDougal, one of the Clintons' former Whitewater partners, Ewing revealed some of the inner workings of Starr's office.

Ewing made a number of concessions under questioning by Susan McDougal's attorney, Mark J. Geragos. For example, he acknowledged that prosecutors had not told grand jurors that James McDougal kept changing parts of his story as Starr's office zeroed in on Whitewater.

And Geragos focused on the fact that even though prosecutors knew McDougal had changed his story, Starr told U.S. District Judge George Howard on the day McDougal was sentenced for his 1996 fraud conviction that he had testified "truthfully" and had "substantially aided our search for the truth." McDougal died in prison last March.

California Congressional representatives who voted to impeach President Clinton are likely to have a tougher time holding on to their seats, according to a new Field poll.

In the wake of impeachment, Californians hold an increasingly negative view of the U.S. Congress -- and a plurality of state residents now disapprove of the job Congress is doing, the poll shows.

At the same time, Californians -- particularly the increasingly influential ``independent'' voters -- have started to favor Democrats.

``Overall, a larger percentage of registered voters say they will be less likely to favor a candidate who voted for impeachment,'' said Michael Latner, Field Institute senior supervisor. ``So Republicans in tight districts may be more vulnerable next time around.''

The poll reflects what could be the real political implications of impeachment in California, the nation's most populous state and a focal point of the Democratic drive to erase the GOP's slim edge in the U.S. House of Representatives. MORE...
