Message: First I want to commend you for handling this situation with Monica excellently. You always conducted yourself as a strong woman, never speaking on the subject and not allowing it to destroy you. I know its was a difficult situation and my heart goes out to you and your daughter. Also it must be mentioned that the only fool in this picture is Monica. She knew what she was doing and for her to think for one minute that Mr. Clinton would leave you, his wife an intelligent, strong, powerful and secure woman for a loose, insecure, gullible GIRL was STUPID. Monica got what she deserve, nothing. She destroyed her reputation, caused her family such misery and to put her mother through all that was so sad. Now getting to more important issues.

I hope that you run for Senate. I think Mr. Guliani has done a decent job as a Mayor. However, I am very unhappy how he handle the Amadou Diallo situation. These four police officer are still allowed to work after they KILLED an inoncent victim. When a few years ago in Howard Beach the neighbor had the Holloween Parade and one of the float was the dragging of a black man. Mr. Guliani was quick to fire the Fireman. The Fireman was absolutely wrong for participating in the parade, however, he did not KILL anyone and he was FIRED. These four police officer shot and KILLED Mr. Diallo an inocent human being and they are walking free in the streets and working. Mr. Guliani should have fired them immediately just like he fired the fireman. Because of the way Mr. Guliani is handling this situation I now have doubts about the way he operates.

Please do not allow this man (Mr. Guliani) to be our Senator. We need someone who is strong, powerful, intelligent, and that person is you. YES, YES, YES, Mrs. Clinton for Senate and in the future Mrs. Clinton for President. Thank You, May God Bless You and Your Daughter. From SLGS

A TOP Pentagon official denied yesterday that he had left Monica Lewinsky to bear the emotional and financial burdens of an abortion alone after their romance. Until yesterday, Thomas Longstreth, 42, was one of the few remaining anonymous figures in the saga of the former White House trainee. Now it has emerged, amid some sniggering, that the man who had a three-month fling with Ms Lewinsky - while she was having an affair with President Clinton - is the Deputy Under Secretary of Defence for Readiness. The President yesterday broke his silence on Ms Lewinsky to say he hoped that she would now be able to get on with life. "And I hope it will be a good life," he said. "This was a pretty tough thing for everybody involved. I wish her well. "She paid a high price for a long time and I feel badly for that. The important thing is that the American people are virtually screaming at us to get on with their lives and to do their business." Mr Longstreth, the President's former romantic rival, is a strategist who was at the centre of planning for operations in the Gulf and Bosnia. In Andrew Morton's book Monica's Story, Ms Lewinsky says that she first met the bachelor identified only as Thomas when she worked at the Pentagon and they were part of a US delegation visiting Bosnia. When they returned she saw him for a date and, in spite of constantly worrying that she was missing calls from Mr Clinton, they had a relationship that ended when she discovered he was seeing other women. As the relationship was ending, she also discovered that she was pregnant and decided, reluctantly, to have an abortion. The book says: "She and Thomas fell out over sharing the costs of the procedure, which meant she had to borrow the money from Aunt Debra. Originally Thomas had promised to accompany her to the hospital but, with relations between them strained, she decided to go through with it alone." However David Mills, Mr Longstreth's lawyer, told The Washington Post that he had offered to help Ms Lewinksy "in any way that he could, and he did provide financial support when she asked for it". The lawyer said that he had contacted the publishers of the book over the alleged inaccuracy. It was reported elsewhere that Mr Longstreth had cancelled cheques showing he had offered her money to pay for the operation. Mr Longstreth was only recently promoted to his new job - in which he reports to William Cohen, the Defence Secretary - after almost a decade at the Pentagon. He was involved in planning for operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm as well as Operation Restore Hope in Somalia. He was director of the Bosnia Task Force and in 1996 was awarded the Secretary of Defence's Medal for Outstanding Public Service. Ms Lewinsky was reported yesterday to be planning the next step in her bid for public acceptance: an appearance on Oscars night. She is expected to attend a party afterwards rather than the awards themselves. Paula Jones will get $200,000 (about £130,000) from the $850,000 (£540,000) settlement that ended her sexual harassment case against President Clinton. The rest will go to her lawyers and the Rutherford Institute, which also assisted in her case.

The politicians have something for sale. Its called influence. The more influence they have, the more they have to sell, and the more money they can get. Now we all hear about campaign finance reform. There is only one way to reform campaign financing, and that is to reduce influence by cutting taxes. The politicians use our tax dollars to get more influence so they can get more money. If they have no influence, then big business will not give big bucks.

McDougal: Whitewater Got Ugly

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- Susan McDougal today implored Arkansans to follow her trial on contempt and obstruction of justice charges, saying it would expose the ugly nature of the Whitewater investigation.

``I think it will be an all-out fight and I think it has become a personal vendetta,'' Mrs. McDougal said. ``It's become more than political. I'm scared this morning.''

Mrs. McDougal made her comments as she arrived at the federal courthouse for jury selection in a trial that could send her back to prison. She has insisted she has no information on the Clintons' business dealings in Arkansas.

Mrs. McDougal already has served 18 months on a civil contempt citation, and the new trial stems from a three-count indictment alleging criminal contempt and obstruction of justice for refusing to answer Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr's questions about the president and first lady.

Deputy Whitewater prosecutor W. Hickman Ewing Jr. said Mrs. McDougal's trial is simply about her failure to follow a judge's direct order.

Grand jurors were investigating whether Mrs. McDougal, 44, had improper financial dealings with the Clintons when the president was governor of Arkansas. McDougal and the Clintons were business partners in the failed real estate development known as Whitewater.

Mrs. McDougal has said she refused to answer questions because she believes Starr would twist her words to suit his purposes and may charge her with perjury if he doesn't get the testimony he wants.

U.S. District Judge George Howard Jr. said last week that he would consider allowing evidence of ``prosecutorial misconduct or outrageous government conduct,'' specifically whether Starr wanted Mrs. McDougal to lie about the Clintons.

Ewing was unfazed.

``We know in any high profile case, it is a normal thing where the prosecutor is attacked,'' he said.

Prosecutors will introduce evidence that Mrs. McDougal had relevant information on the Clintons, Ewing said. According to the indictment, prosecutors want to know:

--Whether Clinton was aware of a $300,000 loan to Mrs. McDougal from David Hale, who pleaded guilty to mail fraud and conspiracy. Hale said Clinton pressured him to make such a loan in 1986. The government claims Mrs. McDougal used the money for purposes other than what it was intended for.

--Whether Clinton knew about Lorance Heights, an 800-acre tract south of Little Rock that the Clintons' and the McDougals' Whitewater Development Corp. purchased in 1986. Prosecutors say the company used money from the $300,000 loan to secure the land. The Clintons have said James McDougal, Mrs. McDougal's former husband, never told them about Lorance Heights or the loan.

--Whether Clinton testified truthfully during the 1996 trial of Mrs. McDougal, her late husband and then-Gov. Jim Guy Tucker.

--Why the words "Payoff Clinton" were written in the notation section of a $5,081.82 check drawn on a McDougal account and payable to Madison Guaranty, which the McDougals owned.

If Hillary Rodham Clinton runs for the U.S Senate from New York, the carpetbag she'd be toting around next year could be a lot heavier than many now believe.

New Yorkers don't mind carpetbaggers, political pundits say. After all, they elected Robert Kennedy of Massachusetts to the Senate in 1964 and James Buckley of Connecticut in 1970, didn't they?

Yes. But both had stronger ties to New York than Hillary Clinton has. Kennedy lived in New York City from a few months after his birth in 1926 until 1942. Buckley lived in Connecticut but was a corporate lawyer in New York City for 14 years before running for the Senate.

But each still had to fight the carpetbagger label, Kennedy more than Buckley because his association with New York was less recent.

The New York Times, a newspaper inclined to back Democrats, endorsed Kennedy's Republican opponent, incumbent Kenneth Keating. In a series of editorials, the Times denounced "the Kennedy Blitzkrieg" on New York and charged that he was using the state as a steppingstone to the presidency. Kennedy did indeed run for president four years later, only to be assassinated minutes after winning the California Democratic primary.

Hillary Clinton will likely also be accused of having presidential ambitions if she runs in New York. But unlike Kennedy, she can make no tenuous claims to the state. She was born and raised in Illinois, went to school in Massachusetts and Connecticut and has spent the majority of her adult life in Arkansas and Washington, D.C.

New York Republican Gov. George Pataki has made clear that the GOP will make her lack of New York roots an issue if she makes a run next year for the seat of retiring Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

"She's thinking about moving to New York to straighten things out. Well, let me say with all due respect, we don't need liberal Democrats moving from Washington to the states to straighten out the states. I think we can find a New Yorker who can do the job for us," he said.

Up to now, most of Hillary Clinton's visits to New York have likely been to attend Democratic political events like the one last week at which she flirtatiously toyed with her admiring audience about her chances of running.

"There was talk I might have an announcement to make," the first lady told the Democratic National Committee's Women's Leadership Forum. "I do not."

Groans of disappointment all around.

But there were groans of anger among many New York Democrats in August 1964 when Robert Kennedy decided to enter the Senate race there. Charges of opportunism flared because Kennedy made the decision only after Lyndon Johnson rejected him as his vice presidential candidate. Democrats who were considering running that year, only to be shoved aside by Kennedy, became embittered. One was Adlai Stevenson, U.N. ambassador in the Kennedy and Johnson administrations.

"The avarice of the K's makes me sick," he wrote a friend angrily after Kennedy entered the race.

Johnson wrote in his memoir The Vantage Point that he felt obliged to support Kennedy's run, mostly out of loyalty to his slain brother. But it came at a price.

"I had to disappoint a friend - Adlai Stevenson, who at that point had decided to seek the New York senatorial nomination himself. He abandoned the idea when I told him that I felt I must support Bobby. Stevenson was hurt, and my inability to encourage him constituted one of my deepest regrets about the New York campaign," Johnson wrote.

In the end, Kennedy won the election. But not without a tough fight and a strong ride on Johnson's coattails. Johnson, running for president that year, carried New York by 2.7 million votes. Kennedy won by 720,000 votes.

If Hillary Clinton runs in New York, her race won't be a breeze either. She could face New York City's popular mayor, Rudy Giuliani. Latest polls already show that hypothetical race nearly tied. In a close contest, and burdened by a carpetbag, could she count on Al Gore's coattails to help pull her to victory?

I am going to talk of controversial things. I make no apology for this.

It's time we asked ourselves if we still know the freedoms intended for us by the Founding Fathers. James Madison said, "We base all our experiments on the capacity of mankind for self government."

This idea, that government was beholden to the people, that it had no other source of power is still the newest, most unique idea in all the long history of man's relation to man. This is the issue of this election: Whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether we abandon the American Revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capital can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves.

You and I are told we must choose between a left or right, but I suggest there is no such thing as a left or right. There is only an up or down. Up to man's age-old dream-the maximum of individual freedom consistent with order or down to the ant heap of totalitarianism. Regardless of their sincerity, their humanitarian motives, those who would sacrifice freedom for security have embarked on this downward path. Plutarch warned, "The real destroyer of the liberties of the people is he who spreads among them bounties, donations and benefits."

The Founding Fathers knew a government can't control the economy without controlling people. And they knew when a government sets out to do that, it must use force and coercion to achieve its purpose. So we have come to a time for choosing.

Public servants say, always with the best of intentions, "What greater service we could render if only we had a little more money and a little more power." But the truth is that outside of its legitimate function, government does nothing as well or as economically as the private sector.

Yet any time you and I question the schemes of the do-gooders, we're denounced as being opposed to their humanitarian goals. It seems impossible to legitimately debate their solutions with the assumption that all of us share the desire to help the less fortunate. They tell us we're always "against," never "for" anything.

We are for a provision that destitution should not follow unemployment by reason of old age, and to that end we have accepted Social Security as a step toward meeting the problem. However, we are against those entrusted with this program when they practice deception regarding its fiscal shortcomings, when they charge that any criticism of the program means that we want to end payments....

We are for aiding our allies by sharing our material blessings with nations which share our fundamental beliefs, but we are against doling out money government to government, creating bureaucracy, if not socialism, all over the world.

We need true tax reform that will at least make a start toward I restoring for our children the American Dream that wealth is denied to no one, that each individual has the right to fly as high as his strength and ability will take him.... But we can not have such reform while our tax policy is engineered by people who view the tax as a means of achieving changes in our social structure....

Have we the courage and the will to face up to the immorality and discrimination of the progressive tax, and demand a return to traditional proportionate taxation? . . . Today in our country the tax collector's share is 37 cents of every dollar earned. Freedom has never been so fragile, so close to slipping from our grasp.

Are you willing to spend time studying the issues, making yourself aware, and then conveying that information to family and friends? Will you resist the temptation to get a government handout for your community? Realize that the doctor's fight against socialized medicine is your fight. We can't socialize the doctors without socializing the patients. Recognize that government invasion of public power is eventually an assault upon your own business. If some among you fear taking a stand because you are afraid of reprisals from customers, clients, or even government, recognize that you are just feeding the crocodile hoping he'll eat you last.

If all of this seems like a great deal of trouble, think what's at stake. We are faced with the most evil enemy mankind has known in his long climb from the swamp to the stars. There can be no security anywhere in the free world if there is no fiscal and economic stability within the United States. Those who ask us to trade our freedom for the soup kitchen of the welfare state are architects of a policy of accommodation.

They say the world has become too complex for simple answers. They are wrong. There are no easy answers, but there are simple answers. We must have the courage to do what we know is morally right. Winston Churchill said that "the destiny of man is not measured by material computation. When great forces are on the move in the world, we learn we are spirits-not animals." And he said, "There is something going on in time and space, and beyond time and space, which, whether we like it or not, spells duty."

You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. If we fail, at least let our children and our children's children say of us we justified our brief moment here. We did all that could be done.

Clinton aides defect, complain of betrayal

WASHINGTON, March 9 (AFP) - White House aides are jumping ship as President Bill Clinton's former trusted lieutenants raise a chorus of discontent about the man who once so inspired them.

"If I knew everything then that I know now, of course I wouldn't have worked for him," ex-Clinton spokesman and former ardent loyalist George Stephanopoulos, writes in a new tell-all book.

Dee Dee Myers, another former White House spokeswoman, stopped defending Clinton in the Monica Lewinsky affair after he confessed to the tryst last August and she said on CNN Monday she was alarmed by the new rape charges against the president.

Juanita Broaddrick's recent claim Clinton sexually assaulted her in 1978 has been the last straw for many at the White House who endured a grim year battling the Lewinsky scandal.

Clinton's former media consultant, David Gergen, is insisting the charges be taken seriously and demands the president speak to them himself instead of hiding behind his lawyers' denials.

Myers' replacement, Mike McCurry, who left the White House in October, is now blasting Clinton's behavior as "exasperatingly stupid" and the betrayal of his aides as "flabbergasting."

"Frankly, the president misled me ... so I came here and misled you too on occasion," he told the White House press corps upon his departure.

McCurry also told George Magazine this month he knows of "no one who is blindly loyal to Bill Clinton."

Indeed, Stephanopoulos predicts in his book, "All Too Human, A Political Education," there will be more departures by disgruntled aides now that Clinton has been acquitted by the Senate.

"In some ways, the battle against impeachment was the glue that was holding a lot of the White House together, people will now leave," he said.

Stephanopoulos, who has been criticized by his former colleagues for taking a job as a news analyst with ABC television, added that the man he helped win the presidency will not allow his name to be spoken in his presence.

The latest defection came last week, when Clinton's longtime political advisor Paul Begala left for a teaching post, following the recent resignation of White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles.

Dick Morris, who was credited with Clinton's comeback after the 1994 Republican congressional takeover, wrote an expose of intimate details about the president and -- perhaps worse -- his reliance on polls to determine every policy move.

As with Stephanopoulos, current White House aides have denounced Morris, who was forced to resign over his own sex scandal at the height of the 1996 elections.

Indeed, Clinton is the most analyzed president in US history and has had more books written about him than any of this predecessors. The latest penned by none other than Lewinsky herself leaves little to the imagination about Clinton's most private inclinations.

But political analyst Stephen Hess says given the extent of his troubles, Clinton has managed to keep his entourage relatively under control.

"Given that this is a president of the United States who has admitted lying to the American people and having an extramarital affair in the Oval Office, I would say the record of loyalty to him is really quite remarkable," he said.

Aides say Clinton is too busy governing to read the books or watch the interviews by his erstwhile intimates.

A Yellow-Bellied China Policy

No one likes to be proved wrong on a vital issue, but I would love to have been proven wrong on China. For the past two years, in the face of irrefutable evidence of the trampling of human freedom in that vast nation, I have been part of a bipartisan coalition calling for a U.S. foreign policy that holds Beijing to account. The list of Chinese transgressions that require such an accounting is as long as the Great Wall, and it is getting longer. But instead of an accounting, U.S. policy has moved from appeasement to acquiescence, from thoroughly knavish to downright slavish.

Secretary of State Madeleine Albright's just-concluded trip to China has been nothing less than painful to watch. The nearest thing the Clinton Administration has been able to muster to an Iron Lady has melted like a sugar cube in the face of Chinese leaders rattling their teacups. The threat of trade sanctions, she vowed from the outset, was not even on the table in her discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan over Beijing's latest crackdown on political dissent.

Another State Department official, speaking on background, waxed almost lyrical in telling the press how pleased the U.S. delegation was that the Chinese did not go through the roof at the mention of human rights. This is now the measure of our foreign policy -- how well we can prevent the blush of apoplexy on the countenance of tyrants? Diplomacy abject to this degree is all the more dismaying because the Clinton delegation left Washington with an unusually strong hand, if it had chosen to play it. By count of 99 to 0, the Senate voted on February 25 to condemn China's human rights abuses and to recommend that the United States sponsor a resolution censuring China when the United Nations Commission on Human Rights begins its annual meeting in Geneva later this month. China, moreover, is looking to contain the damage from Southeast Asia's economic problems, and its lucrative trade with the United States is a key part of the retaining wall. Last year Beijing ran a record $58 billion trade surplus with the United States, and it has rewarded America's generosity by adopting a new round of protectionist policies aimed at foreign currency and investment. Naturally, the trade imbalance is expected to tilt even more heavily in China's favor this year. This imbalance is inimical to American interests on its own terms, but Secretary Albright might at least have used our continued market porosity to leverage some concessions on either human rights or China's military build-up.

There is a lot to be leveraged on both fronts. On the day after the unanimous Senate vote, the State Department issued its annual Country Report on Human Rights Practices for 1998. The language of that report is blunt. Beijing's human rights record deteriorated sharply at the end of last year with a crackdown against organized political dissent. The loosening of government restrictions on calls for political reform abruptly ended last fall. How abruptly? Try prison terms of 13, 11, and 12 years, respectively, for Xu Wenli, Wang Youcai, and Qin Yongmin. All three are veteran democracy advocates. Their crime was to attempt to register the China Democracy Party as an official opposition party to the ruling regime. This subversion in broad daylight brought them criminal trials that can only be described as nasty, brutish and short. These closed trials were accompanied by new government crackdowns on the Internet and China's publishing industry.

In the past, imprisonment of dissidents has at least afforded Beijing a stockpile of bargaining chips with which to placate foreign visitors. In 1997 famed dissident Wei Jingsheng was released and exiled to the United States by the Chinese government to mollify U.S. public opinion in advance of the Clinton-Jiang Zemin Summit. This time, apparently, we did not make so bold as to tie anyone's release to the conduct of what State Department spokesman James Rubin called, accurately enough, a business trip.

The Chinese know business. They have made it their business to acquire U.S. technology, everything from supercomputers to guidance systems, to help them increase the range and accuracy of their ballistic missiles. They have already boasted of their ability to reach Los Angeles, but the immediate target is much closer to home. Beijing conducted missile launch exercises in December on the mainland opposite Taiwan.

Rather than remind Chinese leaders that the United States will stand against any effort to retake Taiwan by force, the U.S. delegation murmured aloud about our inability to deploy a missile defense anytime soon. All in all, it was an abject week for American foreign policy. Neither Congress nor the White House has had the nerve to challenge China's trade privileges. Speaking up forcefully and convincingly on Chinese human rights abuses in international forums takes a moral fiber this administration has allowed to grow slack from disuse. Today China, our fourth largest trading partner, is no longer changing for the better. The sad truth is that neither are we.
