ARLINGTON, Va.--Frustrated by years of beating up on President Clinton and watching his poll ratings rise, conservatives are finding a new target for their anger: the leadership of the Republican Party, long their political home.

     "Republicans of late have spent far too much time poring over the polling and focus group data, trying to discern the drift of public opinion," contended Gary Bauer, a leader of the party's social conservative wing who is expected to announce his presidential candidacy next week.

     "People will not respect such a party," Bauer said. "The people want an alternative to Bill Clinton, not an imitation of him."      Joining in the assault was yet another presidential prospect, former Tennessee Gov. Lamar Alexander. As a White House candidate in 1996, Alexander was viewed with suspicion by many conservatives as sort of a closet moderate. But at Thursday's conference, he accused Texas Gov. George W. Bush--the early front-runner for the 2000 GOP presidential nomination--of using "weasel words" by labeling himself "a 'compassionate conservative.' "      "Is Mr. Bush trying to suggest . . . that conservatism . . . is by his definition without compassion?" Alexander asked. MORE . . .

Message: I am going to work to defeat those of my fellow Republicans who lacked the courage to resist the right wing of the Republican party in the House and those in the Senate who believed that saving face for the House managers was more important than responding to the needs and will of the American public. To add salt to the wounds the Senate Republicans have allowed a constitutional process to be turned into a third world show trial. I served proudly in the Nixon, Ford and Reagan Administrations. I am ashamed of the Republican party today. The House Republicans are dominated by Clinton haters and right wingers and the Senate Republicans lack the courage to act with fidelity to both the Constitution and the people who put them in office. For all their pious pronouncements on television the Senate Republicans led by Trent Lott are behaving like fraternity boys rather than the statesmen who once led the GOP. With a party fractured by mediocre Senators on the one hand and right wing fanatics on the other there seems to me no alternative but to hand them a political defeat at the polls. That is why the Democrats rebuilt their party when it was out of synch with the people and unfortunately that seems to be the only way we Republicans will learn to rebuild ours. An old Republican colleague of mine in Washington once said: "How do you get a mule's attention? You hit him across the head with a two by four." I wouldn't do that to an animal but its seems the only alternative with the Republican party. Will I change parties? No, I will work from within to defeat incumbents and work from within to rebuild a new GOP--a new GOP that the American people will respect.

Message: HateSpeech is back!

A while ago the editors of this site made a connection between the torture and death of a college student to statements by Conservatives opposed to homosexuality. The editors said that these Conservatives should realize that their words might compel others to take action, and should curb their speech accordingly.

Recently, however, HateSpeech has done much more that state a position on an issue. HateSpeech openly advocates the destruction of personal property and physical violence against those he/she doesn't agree with.

And not one voice of reason from the editors. How odd. Aren't they wary of the consequences that could result if some lunatic decides to follow through on the maniacal ravings of HateSpeech? How could this be?

The editors have repeatedly expressed their concern about proven charlatans that foul conservative ranks. Well here's a Conservative concern for you: That liberals believe free speech is a one-way street, and will readily accommodate any measures to crush those who oppose them.

Do we see here any signs that lend credence to this concern? Pontificating against those who speak out against their agenda, while at the same time sitting by in silence while those in their own ranks promote hate and violence?

The silence is deafening, and the hypocrisy, overwhelming.

Unfortunately I often run out of time, and when I see the forum is too long I just start a new one without reading all the posts. I apologize.

Budda's central philosophy was that we should not get "too attached" to anything because that is the cause of suffering. Many famous people and deep thinkers have said something like this in different ways. One of our forefathers also said something like "the nation that hates.... too much, or loves ...too much ....." I will try and find the quote. I think all of us should take a vow to ourselves never to go to extremes with our hatred.

I know in my lifetime, and I have lived long enough to have 13 grandchildren, that I cringe when I remember how passionate I was on a some concepts, and even prepared to put my life on the line for them, and how utterly wrong they turned out to be over time. I am now a firm believer in "The Law of Unintended Consequences" and try not to go too far out on a limb. I try to curb myself, but as you often point out, I still go too far out sometimes. I thank you for your attacks, even though they get nasty sometimes. Nevertheless I value your opinions as a balance to my thinking which is why you are Honored Guests on this forum.

With all due respect, we both know this has never been a real trial. The "jurors" even declared that they were more than jurors and could therefore ignore the evidence if they chose to. There has never been the slightest chance that the Democrats would convict for any reason. This has been clearly demonstrated in that the Prosecution has Bill Clinton dead bang on both counts and still the votes are almost straight along party lines. This has never really been about convicting Bill Clinton, it's been about the process. We knew there was no way we were going to convict this guy but we felt that the Constitution dictated that we follow the process regardless. The Democrats didn't even want to do that much as it would clearly show the hypocrisy of their taking an oath to be impartial jurors. It seems that the Democrats in general have little respect for sacred oaths these days.

Bugs, LVD is correct, we should have witnesses if only because it is part of the process. We know full well that the Democrats made their minds up long ago and we won't be bitter that they voted to protect a member of their party. But we will remember. And the public will remember. There are two years left for Bill Clinton to get himself into a fix he can't get out of. He's already helped the Republicans gain and keep both the Senate and the House. He's already lost all credibility by getting caught in so many lies. He's as lame as a duck can be. He can do nothing to further the causes of the Left because he has rendered himself and the Democrats powerless by his treachery. Since the Senate proceedings are equivalent to a court trial, it makes sense that the Chief Justice, like any courtroom judge, isn't likely to intervene or make any rulings unless he's petitioned to do so by an objection from either side. As far as I know, this hasn't happened.

So don't blame Justice Rehnquist.

It's interesting to ponder what would happen if he was asked to make a ruling. Since the Congress is a separate but equal branch of government, they might ignore the ruling on the grounds that he doesn't have the authority to render decisions on issues before the Senate.

And since the Constitution stipulates that Supreme Court justices are appointed for life, you'd have to be pretty resourceful to kick him out!

While I don't have enough evidence to confirm this - I believe the Leigh Ratiner in the message above was the Attorney for INSLAW (a Washington-based computer software firm) that had a go-in with the government over software licensing. Mr. Ratiner was ultimately fired for his participation and this most likely explains the motivation for his statements. Ed Meese was supposed to have helped get Mr. Ratiner fired and this would explain his newfound hatred for the Republican Party (having nothing to do with the Senate trial). Abortion is not a debate...it is about the lives of children. Every child should have the privilege of being a wanted child or he should not be submitted to the cruel unfairnesses that are a natural part of this life. Not only should women not be forced to have children they do not want regardless of whether the child was foolishly concieved or not, but children should not be forced to be born into situations in which they will not be cared for properly. Adoption is a nice option in a perfect world, but the realities of this world are such that the children who most need adopted in this world (poorly nourished, drug-addicted, deformed, or black babies) are the very ones who will not ever be adopted. They will instead grow up either at the hands of their disgruntled parents or the cold, unsympathetic...often abusive....foster care system to become angry young people who take lives and destroy property in their quest to vent their rage. They often ultimately become the wards of the prison system as adults. At the very least, even if they do not ventilate their rage on society, these miserable children will ventilate it on themselves to lead depressed, unproductive lives that are a relief to themselves and the world, which they tax with their inability to contribute, at the moment of their deaths an average of 72 to 75 years too late.

Jeremy...is a six year old black boy who lives in the projects. He often has an odor to him because he rarely bathes. He is in first grade for the second time and still cannot count to 100 or read in a coherent manner. He is becoming a sullen child, because he realizes that he is different and many of the other children in his classroom have advantages he does not and that is why they are learning and he is not. Jeremy feels, and looks, different from theother children. His mother used crack during much of her pregnancy and as a result he no longer lives with her, but instead lives with a grandmother who is in her 60's and tired much of the time.

Kim is a white, 7 year old girl who has clean hair on most Monday mornings, but by Friday it looks like it has baby oil in it since it has obviously not been washed since the weekend. Kimmy often comes to school with out socks and the shoelaces in her shoes are about 18 inches too long and she struggles all day long to keep them tied in such a fashion that she does not trip on them. Her clothes are small and tight. When asked to count to 100, something her classmates can do with ease, Kimmy skips from 39 to 90. She is falling further and further behind. When asked what she wants to be when she grows up, she says she wants to be the boss of everyone. Her mother drank a good deal while she was pregnant, and still does. Kimmy has not ever met her father.

These are real children leading miserable lives...two of millions.

Jeepers, I like everybody on this forum (for the most part) - I wouldn't be here if I didn't. I believe that you can vehemently oppose the positions, opinions, and views of a person and still be friends. When I strongly oppose a position and use words like ludicrous or lunatic - I am referring to the position not to a person's character. I have more respect for all the people on this forum then I do for the mind-numbed masses that have tuned it all out. Taking the energy to type your opinion on this forum is noteworthy - we are not changing the world or anything other they blowing hot air (or is the typing hot characters or something). The important point is we are at least connected to some degree. Like I have said over and over - we are all on the same team and while we may disagree, I assume what is good for our country in our focus. I may go off the deep end opposing a position that I think is ludicrous, insane, or ad hominem - but remember I am attacking a position, not the messenger. As long as we remember we are on the same team - we will be OK. What we have right now came from the work of both parties and our system will not work as a one party system. We argue about who has the better ideas - but sometime we must remember that both parties are responsible for what we have now. The parties are supposed to have opposing positions or it wouldn't really be a two party system - this is the way it works: both side beat each other about the head and what eventually trickles outs is a usually a compromise to some degree - this is good. The carriage is speeding uncontrolled toward a very busy street. Jeremy quickly runs over and stops the carriage. The baby in the carriage grows up to become the president and is responsible for stopping World War III - which would have killed millions of people. So if Control Girl got her way and Jeremy was killed as a baby - the baby that became president would have died that day and millions would have been killed in WWIII, Beth would have lived a lonely life, and the park were Jeremy work would be overgrown and full of trash.

While in high school, they find that Kim has a learning disability - she is dyslexic. Kim gets special instruction and start to intellectually blossom. Her years of neglect and scholastic unachievement have made Kim more focused. After graduating from school, she gets a scholarship to Georgetown University. She works very hard and becomes a doctor. She focuses on research - because of her experiences as a youth, so is able to direct her research without the normal biases of students that had what we call "normal" lives. Kim finds a cure for cancer. She is personally responsible for saving the lives of millions of people. Kim becomes very wealthy. Kim marries a man that came from a multi-generation family of politicians. She has a baby - a son. One day while walking thought the park, Kim stumbles and accidentally pushes his baby carriage toward a steep hill that ends in a busy highway. Kim looks up in horror - thinking her baby was surely going to die. Suddenly a park worker steps out of nowhere and stops the carriage saving the baby. Kim's son grows up to be president - you know the rest of the story. So, if Control Girl got her way and Kim was killed before she was born, the cure for cancer would not have been found (costing millions and millions of lives) and her son would not be president and WWIII would kill millions. Control Girl's two abortions would then be responsible for the death and suffering of many millions.

GOP House To Hear Tough Talk At Retreat Party leaders say they have lost focus

House Republicans are in for a harsh assessment of their political standing this weekend, with their own leaders telling them they could lose their already slim majority if they do not better advocate a clear agenda, raise more money and recruit strong candidates for the 2000 elections.

One of the bearers of the bad news, to be delivered at a Republican retreat in Williamsburg, Va., that started last night, will be Representative Thomas Davis of Virginia, the blunt new chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, the party's fund-raising arm.

Republican aides said Davis will tell members that the historical tide is against them, since they have lost seats in the last two elections. They said that while the impeachment of President Clinton has hurt the party for now, it will be less of a factor in 2000, and that Republicans need to articulate a clear message.

``The Democrats are beating us on crime, taxes and Social Security,'' said a top Republican aide who insisted on anonymity. ``We've got to get back on track and redefine who we are. If we don't, we're dead in the water.''

With an eye on national polls that show their party in free-fall, Republican members are already expressing concern about their own re-elections next year. Representative Brian Bilbray, a moderate from San Diego who won re-election with 49 percent of the vote in 1998, is leading a group he calls ``the majority makers.''

They are the 21 House Republicans who were elected last year with 53 percent or less of the vote and who need to be re-elected if the Republicans are to hold their majority in 2000. The Republicans control Congress with 222 seats, to 211 for the Democrats. There is one independent and one vacancy.

While Davis is expected to paint a stark picture for Republicans, his main message will be that the party can turn things around if everyone works hard to erase the $4 million debt and unite on a legislative message, he said through a spokesman.

The retreat comes as the Senate's impeachment trial of Clinton overshadows all other activity on Capitol Hill, including attempts by House Republican leaders to roll out legislation. The leaders are planning to advise members at the retreat that as soon as the trial ends, they need to try to grab the initiative on big issues like Social Security and Medicare to win back voters' confidence.

The results of a new poll, to be announced at the retreat, shows that voters prefer Democrats to Republicans in Congress by seven points. The poll was conducted by the Republican firm of Fabrizio and McLaughlin in Virginia.

Her birth parents aborted her first sibling and more than likely would have killed her too had she known she was pregnant. My answer is that we cannot usurp the will of God and make those decisions. Each person must communicate within himself and with God directly for the answer. It is NOT for you to decide who live or dies. You are not God. If after careful thought, prayers, meditation or whatever we arrive at our decision then we should be free to exercise our decision each according to his/her own conscience, not your conscience. Message: The Eskimoes, in their native world of ice and snow, survived by putting their first born daughter out in the snow to die. They had to do this because she could not hunt enough food for the family. Had they not done this the Eskimoes as a tribe would have died out. The individual has often been sacrificed for the survival of the whole group. It has been this way since time began, and we must therefore conclude that God has a hand in it somewhere.

If you want to be the arbiter of who should live and who should die then you are usurping God's will. It is not for you to decide. Not everyone can communicate within themselves to reach their spiritual center to receive their personal revelations from God. This takes time, practice, maturity, deep meditation and clear, honest, thinking. Most people rely on the pearls of wisdom handed down by the sages, in bibles and other revered channels of information, which is good. When you decide who should live and who should die you are demonstrating that you do not understand these dynamics. For instance, if you, Vernon, were a missionary among the Eskimoes you would demand that they not put their first born daughter in the snow to die. If they followed your directives, which they would not, but if they did they would perish.

To prevent the suffering of the unborn I would like to see you promote the French abortion pill which simply expels the fetus without the "tearing limb from limb like a Thanksgiving turkey" as Favius described. Nature spontaneously aborts like that a lot, so its the natural thing to do.

I am not trying to usurp anybodys will, including Gods will, but apparently you feel that you know better than God who should live and who should die, because you advocate killing the innocent unborn children for the good of those who have already been born. As for the spontaneous abortion pill, that is still murder. Why not stop engaging in the activity that makes babies? Do you have no willpower? Are you so weak spined that you can't abstain from sex? If a woman doesn't want a baby, then don't make one. It is as simple as that. And if you should become pregnant, if you don't want the baby then give it away. But don't KILL it for gosh sake.
