Angry activists say party has lost focus
"Republicans of late have spent far too much time poring over the polling and focus group data, trying to discern the drift of public opinion," contended Gary Bauer, a leader of the party's social conservative wing who is expected to announce his presidential candidacy next week.
"People will not respect such a party," Bauer said. "The people want an alternative to Bill Clinton, not an imitation of him." Joining in the assault was yet another presidential prospect, former Tennessee Gov. Lamar Alexander. As a White House candidate in 1996, Alexander was viewed with suspicion by many conservatives as sort of a closet moderate. But at Thursday's conference, he accused Texas Gov. George W. Bush--the early front-runner for the 2000 GOP presidential nomination--of using "weasel words" by labeling himself "a 'compassionate conservative.' " "Is Mr. Bush trying to suggest . . . that conservatism . . . is by his definition without compassion?" Alexander asked. MORE . . .
Pushing back on GOP coup d’etat
MSNBC NEWS -
by Eric Alterman
Dec. 19 — The crisis is finally upon us. President Clinton has been impeached. The Republicans have their victory. The term “high crimes and misdemeanors” has been degraded to include lying about sex. The most serious sanction in our constitutional system has been reduced to a weapon of partisan warfare.
"If the Republicans want to commit political suicide by pursuing the path that has destroyed their two most recent leaders, well then, that’s their right. But they cannot be allowed to drag down the republic with them."
The impeachment vote is being driven by the ascendant radical wing of the party that, under Tom DeLay’s guidance, controls its fund-raising. Those who dare to buck DeLay and his crusade risk inspiring a well-funded conservative challenger without any help from the national party. Those who vote his way have two years to try to make the country forget, or to hide behind the excuse that the impeachment vote was not designed to remove the president, but only to signal the seriousness of his crimes and let the Senate decide the matter.

STARR WEIGHS WHETHER TO INDICT SITTING PRESIDENT
01/29/99 06:09 UTC -- Independent counsel Kenneth Starr has concluded that he has the constitutional authority to seek a grand jury indictment of President Clinton before he leaves the White House, says a new report set for publication on Sunday.
"Starr and his prosecutors have actively considered whether to ask a grand jury here to indict Clinton," the NEW YORK TIMES is planning to report in a Page One, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.
TIMES investigator Don Van Natta Jr. pushes details: "Starr and his prosecutors have had no communications with the House managers or the White House about the possibility of including the president's future criminal jeopardy in negotiations over a censure of the president."
Van Natta quotes "associates" of Starr throughout his story.
These associates emphasized that Starr had not decided whether, or when, but "neither the outcome of the Senate trial nor the public's wishes expressed in opinion polls would affect his decision.

In december newspapers reported that Georgia Congressman Bob Barr, Clinton's attacker-in-chief, had delivered a keynote speech to a white-supremacist group called the Council of Conservative Citizens. Not long after that it came out that Senate majority leader Trent Lott had also been cosy with the C.C.C. When confronted, both Barr and Lott denied that they were aware of the group's racist agenda, though the organization's officers have never made any secret of their views - and Lott's uncle Arnie Watson is a member of its executive board. Barr has since issued a statement disavowing the CCC, but we are still waiting for Trent Lot to follow suit.

Is it true that Bob Barr and Trent Lott lied to a grand jury about speaking to the CCC? And did they also attempt to coerce others who knew about it to keep their mouths shut?
If this is true, they should be kicked out of Congress. If not, in what way does it qualify as hypocrisy? Isn't President Clinton on trial for committing perjury and obstruction of justice? Wouldn't it only be hypocrisy if Barr and Lott supported the conviction of President Clinton even though they themselves had also committed felonies and attempted to cover them up?
Or have liberals simply decided to rewrite the dictionary? Are they becoming that desperate?

Dear Senator Daschle,
With all due respect, I know you have tried to stop this runaway train
the Republicans have engineered. However, I just have one question for
you in reference to the over $50 million dollars the Senate Republicans
and Ken Star have so blatently plundered on this.
DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA AT ALL JUST HOW MASSIVE AN AMOUNT OF MONEY 50 million dollars really is ?!!! THINK about it. 50 MILLION!!!!!!!!! How much Police equipment could we have purchased with that 50 million? It certainly would have bought a LOT of NEEDED EQUIPMENT that would have made my Police Officer son's job a lot safer. I hope you will take time out from this circus to think about it. We're talking about REAL POLICE WHO NEED REAL MONEY TO HELP THEM "Monica" is not important- saving a Police Officer's LIFE IS !!!

It's about enough to pay for the first 50 Cruise Missiles used in the last
attack on Iraq (not including the cost of transporting or launching them).
We burn up that much on "pork" every day. The only answer is to keep the
money ourselves and keep Washington's grubby hands off it. Then your county/state
could decide how to spend your county/state's citizens money themselves without
the inherent waste of the Federal Bureaucracy.
Also, you are correct, "Monica is not important", but the honesty of our most
powerful leaders is. Why do you think we had to spend all this money
investigating the Liar-in-Chief? Clinton spent every cent of that money by
not being honest, by lying to our faces, by lying to his staff, by lying to his
Cabinet, by lying to his wife, by lying to two courts, by lying to you. If people
like you had voted for an honest man we would not be in this mess. If Bill Clinton
was a man we would not be in this mess. Ken Starr is doing his job, too
well for most Democrats, nothing more.

Does Crazy Kenny think he is the 101st Senator
First, and unnamed source leaked that Starr was thinking of an indictment – the most likely source of the leak is the White House because their best defense has been “Change the subject and be anti-Ken Starr”. Ken Starr has neither confirmed nor denied that leak so, Editor, you are jumping to some wild conclusions based solely on unsourced innuendo (wasn’t it you that was screaming about how bad it is to base judgement on innuendo?)[LIKE THE NEW YORK TIME, THE WASHINGTON POST, THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, THE FOX NEWS, ....]. Second, the Senate in the legislative branch of government and Ken Starr is a duly appointed and upheld representative of the judicial branch – therefore you comment about the 101th Senator is very sophomoric because indictment come for the judicial branch and Starr is a representative of the judicial branch and there is not relationship to the Senate. If Ken Starr can get a indictment – he should (wasn’t that one of the excuses the Democrats use for not throwing Clinton out of office – because he is still subject to criminal prosecution. Editors, be consistent. Remember, Ken Starr is a duly appointed representative of the Judicial branch of government. He was appointed and is overseen by the Clinton Administration and can be fired at any time for cause – why has he not been fired? Because there is no cause!

I love it!
Liberals are getting the idea that it is OK to be a liberal again.
On CSPAN today I heard a liberal spew the liberal party line "redistribution of wealth, higher taxes, more government control of business". Jeepers, I almost became giddy (in a political sense). The Left thinks Americans love-afraid with our favorite cad/president has something to do with American embracing liberalism. I yelling at the TV today "Say it loud, say it proud, Mr. Liberal Man!". This will assure that the Republicans retain control of the House and Senate and the Presidency. This liberal clown on CSPAN actually said that deregulation of business (that gave us our current strong economy) was evil and that the middle class need to pay more taxes. You should have seen me - right there in front of my TV - doing the conservative dance!
Just when I thought it could not get any better - I saw a new poll that showed ether GW Bush or Ms. Dole severely kicking Al Gores butt 59% to 39% (like you Democrats say - polls don't lie). Last Saturday, I say polling results reluctantly presented from a liberal women group that showed 58% of WOMEN believe abortion should be illegal except in extreme cases and 54% of WOMEN believe the Christian Coalition is positive force of politic. The Liberal Democrats have completely misread the Clinton syndrome. Clinton is American lovable Bart Simpson president - he makes us laugh because we find it funny who he wiggles out of tight situations. Democrats think it shows support for Liberal Democrat policies (redistribution of wealth, more government control of business, more taxes and more government programs). The polls show that while American loves the boy-president Clinton - nevertheless, American is more conservatives than it have been is the last 50 years. I am looking forward to more Democrats letting their Liberal Flags Fly and I am looking forward to a Republican controlled House, Senate, and Presidency in 2000 (remember Liberals, polls don't lie!)
'scuse me while I party like it's 1999!

It is almost exactly what it cost for Bill Clinton to take 1500 of his friends on his China vacation in an attempt to divert attention from his legal problems (you remember that trip - the one where the Chinese laughed at Clinton and tested missiles while he was there asking them not to test missiles).
Also it is about 1/3 less than the money spent by the Liberal Democrat runaway train know as the Iran/Contra Investigation. That's right in the 80's, well actually in the 80's and the 90's because it went on for seven years (that is 7 times the length of Zipper-Gate) - the Democrats created a witch-hunt in which they were going to prove that Reagan and/or Bush lied. They failed completely - the Democrat never found evidence to support their witch-hunt claims and the best they could do was indict Ollie North on a charge that was not even directly related to Iran/Contra (it related to who paid for a security fence around his house). The charges against North were thrown out on appeal (the true sign of a witch-hunt). The Democrat did use the Iran/Contra witch-hunt to indict a high ranking Bush official TWO WEEKS before the 92 election - guess what? The indictment was thrown out as baseless AFTER the election (oh no, that was not politically motivated(and monkey fly out of my butt)). Iran/Contra went on for 7 years and 70 millions and yielded 0 convictions and 0 articles of impeachment sent to congress. Ken Starr's case has gone on for 4 years and 40 million dollars but if covered MANY charges including White Water, FileGate, TravelGate, and ZipperGate. Ken Starr has so far received 15 conviction or guilty pleas (including Clinton's assistant Attorney General) and 3 articles of impeachment sent to congress (two of the articles of impeachment were passed by congress making Bill Clinton the FIRST elected president to be impeached. Compared to Iran/Contra, Ken Starr has been a bargain!

WITNESS: HOUSE INVESTIGATORS 'AFRAID OF PHYSICAL RETALIATION'
01/31/99 02:18 UTC -- Investigators in the Senate impeachment trial are in fear that there will be direct retaliation against them, according to a witness that was questioned last week in Washington.
Former Clinton adviser Dick Morris said on FOX NEWS CHANNEL's DRUDGE that during questioning, investigators told him that they are "physically afraid of retaliation" for their role in the impeachment trial.
Joined in progress...
1/30/99 9:11 PM ET
MORRIS: When I was called by the House Judiciary Committee just last weekend to testify or to meet with them I met with 3 investigators of the committee. They asked me not to use their names and I won't but they were each 50 years of age or over, they weren't kids. They had decades of experience working for the IRS, the FBI, and all kinds of other investigative organizations; they told me that they were physically afraid
of retaliation. They asked me if I would testify_
DRUDGE: The ones questioning you were afraid?!
MORRIS: Exactly, they asked me if I would testify and I said yea. And they said aren't you afraid of retaliation? And I said what are they going to expose, my sex life? You know we have done all that. I've taken the trouble to not sin since then. And they said no, no. I mean don't you know the list of the 25 people who have died in mysterious circumstances in connection with this investigation? And I said are you guys out of your minds? And they said no, no. And one of them said I guarantee you that each of us will have an IRS audit when this is over, he said I'm saving my receipts I know that I am going to have an audit. And I said, how does that work? And he said well the head of the IRS and Hillary are very good friends.
DRUDGE: Let me get this straight, those even questioning people at this point are afraid.
MORRIS: Yes. And we are not talking here about some right wing nuts, or some people who are really paranoid. We are talking about guys who have spent 20 or 30 years as top level investigators for the IRS and the FBI who have retired and are now on leave and brought back by the Judiciary Committee and they specifically asked me not to mention their names on the air.
DRUDGE: Well we won't.

Moynihan says Clinton lacks character
President Clinton's policies,
not only his personal behavior, display an ``absence of character,''
Democratic Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan said in an interview with
The New Yorker magazine released Sunday.
``There is a sort of absence of character that has been the quality of this administration,'' said the 71-year-old Moynihan, who plans to retire in 2000.
The senior senator from New York, who has played key roles in drafting social and economic legislation since his election to the Senate in 1977, said that Clinton had done ``little things'' to win reelection and was unrealistic about larger problems facing the nation.
``We've had this miniaturization of the presidency -- doing this little thing and that little thing,'' said Moynihan, whose relationship with Clinton has never been warm, particularly since they disagreed over Clinton's approach to health-care reform in 1993.
In the interview appearing in the Feb. 8 issue of The New Yorker that goes on sale Monday, Moynihan cited Clinton's education initiatives as an example.
``He continues to suggest that in a few short years we can be first in the world in science and math,'' Moynihan said, referring to Clinton's education proposals in his Jan. 19 State of the Union address.
``Something like that would take about three generations,'' Moynihan said. ``The idea that he could say that with a straight face is extraordinary. We are in a disastrous state with regard to this most important part of American life, and what we get is this attitude of 'wishing will make it so.'''
Moynihan has declined to say how he would vote at the end of the Clinton's impeachment trial on charges stemming from his affair with Monica Lewinsky.
But Moynihan described ``a budding triumphalism'' among Democrats over the outcome. Senate votes last week made clear that there was not the two-thirds majority required to convict Clinton and remove him from office.
``And it's true that we thwarted a coup, and that's a good thing. But you have to say they (the Republicans) didn't start this. The president did,'' Moynihan said.
But he said that removing Clinton from office would destabilize the presidency. ``There are problems with the personal behavior. We had the right to expect that he could have held off until ... 2002.''
The Senator offered a terse ``welcome'' to the possibility that Hillary Rodham Clinton might succeed him when he leaves office in 2000, The New Yorker said.
Public opinion polls have shown that if she ran, Hillary Clinton would win the Democratic nomination for Moynihan's Senate seat and defeat potential Republican rivals such as New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
As for Giuliani, the senator was more pointed in discussing his potential Senate career. He said of Giuliani, who has a reputation for being strong-willed but sensitive to criticism: ''You can't come to the Senate for group therapy. You need to learn how to work in groups before you arrive.''

I am sure that YOU liberals do not kill with bullets, you seem like nice folks if a bit on the naive side, but let me assure you that Liberals DO kill those who are in their way just as readily as anyone else and what's more, they don't seem to be exceptionally good at covering their tracks when they do it.

denounce Sid "Vicious" Blumenthal's blatent lies.
XXXXX DRUDGE REPORT XXXXX 02/01/99 17:21 UTC XXXXX
Bill Clinton is however, the "cleanest president Monica Lewinsky ever had"!
MEDIA DECEIVED: WHITE HOUSE AIDE BLUMENTHAL MADE UP QUOTES FOR NY TIMES, SMEARED STARR OFFICE
It has been seven months since NEW YORK TIMES columnist Anthony Lewis printed questions that White House aide Sidney Blumenthal said were posed to him before the Lewinsky grand jury.
Questions, it would later be revealed, that were never asked!
In his June 29, 1998 column -- slugged "Questions that Degrade" -- Lewis wrote:
"Sidney Blumenthal, assistant to the President, made his third appearance before Kenneth Starr's grand jury in Washington last Thursday... Mr. Blumenthal decided to tell me about the experience, as a grand-jury witness may do... Prosecutors asked Mr. Blumenthal to leave the room so they could consult. After five minutes he was called back, and Mr. Wisenberg asked him: 'Does the President's religion include sexual intercourse?'"
But according to transcripts of Blumenthal's grand jury testimony, released four months after the NEW YORK TIMES column ran, that question was never asked by prosecutors!
Lewis continued: "There was another sexual question in last week's grand-jury session, conducted by two new prosecutors. It was, 'Does the President believe that oral sex is sex?' It was just that -- a general question not tied to any particular matter."
No. It was a general question not tied to any particular reality. Another question that prosecutors never asked!
Lewis summarized: "What we have here, I think, is third-rate prosecutors full of hubris and obsessed by sex... It is sneering, smart-aleck stuff, the tone of Clinton-haters on cable television and the Internet."
The NEW YORK TIMES even worked some of the phony questions into its news copy.
"In two recent visits to the grand jury, Mr. Blumenthal said, he was asked, 'Does the President believe that oral sex is sex?' and 'Does the President's religion include sexual intercourse?'" -- JAMES BENNET's "The Titillating, Zigzagging Focus on Sex at 1600" June 30, 1998, Section A; Page 17.
Seven months later, Bennet still has not informed his readers that Blumenthal's statements were false.
And columnist Lewis has never straightened up his mess for the "newspaper of record."
NEW YORK TIMES executive editor Joseph Lelyveld could not be reached for comment.
A Starr associate explains that the Office of the Independent Counsel could not alert the media at the time of the smear due to restrictions covering grand jury secrecy.
But the grand jury foreperson personally lectured Blumenthal during the closing moments of the session last summer:
"We are very concerned about the fact that during your last visit that an inaccurate representation of the events that happened were retold on the steps of the courthouse."
"I appreciate your statement," Blumenthal responded.
"If Ken Starr is interested in the truth, he heard it today," Blumenthal told reporters just moments later.
Sidney Blumenthal, still employed at the White House, is scheduled to be a witness in the Clinton impeachment trial on Wednesday.
Will reporters print his version of the secret Senate questioning?
Or wait for the videotape.

Judicial Review
Thomas Sowell
Sept. 16, 1998
ONE OF THE UNFORTUNATE CONSEQUENCES of the media's preoccupation with presidential sex is that many people will never see the woods for the trees. The whole pattern of obstruction of justice that was used in the Lewinsky episode had been used before by both Clintons, time and again, going all the way back to their days in Arkansas.
Whether the particular issue at a given time was money, sex or power, the pattern has been the same. And it has been the same for Hillary Clinton as for Bill Clinton.
Just as Bill Clinton said that he "never had sex with that woman," so Hillary wrote in her newspaper column in January 1996 that she had been cleared of any involvement in the massive frauds that led to the collapse of the Madison Guaranty Savings & Loan Association in Arkansas. To add emphasis, she said that a "prominent Republican, former U.S. Attorney Jay Stephens, headed the inquiry" by the Pillsbury law firm that supposedly exonerated her.
Several months of Senate committee investigations, however, revealed an entirely different story. Jay Stephens not only did not head the inquiry, he had nothing to do with writing the report and refused even to review it, since he knew that doing so would make it look as if he were involved with it or approved it. "I refused to do that," he said, "because I was not involved."
Mr. Stephens was not involved because the White House went ballistic at the outset, when it was first suggested that he might be involved. The billing records of the law firm confirm that Stephens was quickly phased out of this investigation that Hillary Clinton claimed he "headed."
Two other members of the same law firm wrote reports and one of them said: "I don't think our reports exonerated anybody of anything." Their whole purpose was to determine whether it made economic sense to launch a civil lawsuit against Madison Guaranty, not to determine which individuals might be guilty or innocent.
In the same column, Hillary Clinton said that she did "minimal legal work on Madison." Yet records showed that she had dozens of meetings with the people for whom she did this "minimal" legal work.
More records might have revealed even more information, but Hillary had many of those records destroyed at the Rose Law Firm, where she was a partner. Other records were stolen from the same firm by Webster Hubbell and turned over to White House lawyer Vincent Foster. This is the same Vincent Foster who committed suicide on the day when the FBI began seizing documents in Arkansas.
This is the same Vincent Foster whose office was ransacked for hours after his death, despite requests from law enforcement officials that nothing be touched until they got there. This is the same Vincent Foster whose fingerprints were found -- along with Hillary's -- on billing records that got "lost" in the White House for two years after they were subpoenaed.
In all of this, we see the same utter disregard for the truth and the same pattern of destroying evidence and obstructing justice that most people have heard about only through the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Consider this column the "family hour" account of how the Clintons operate.
These would be mere incidental facts about individuals if those individuals did not have and wield the enormous power and influence that come with living in the White House. Their clout has been used to corrupt the processes of government for their own personal benefit. Such abuses of power are not just their "private lives" or "family problems that are nobody else's business."
The question is not even what the Clintons do or do not deserve. Ultimately, the issue is not what their past has been like, but what this country's future will be like if holders of powers can use their positions to put themselves above the law.
The fact that nobody is above the law has given the United States and a relative handful of other countries the freedom that makes us different from the corrupt despotisms that have been the norm over most of the planet and for most of history.
It isn't fashionable to talk about the blessings of this country in this politically correct time of complaint and condemnation. But, if we ever forget these blessings -- or let them erode because we have become fat, dumb and happy -- we will learn the hard way what blessings we once had, but only after it is too

Editors, the above statement made me laugh so hard milk came out of my nose - well, not really because I don't really like milk, I meant figuratively speaking. Ken Starr was NEVER tasked with looking into the Clinton Death List and therefore never investigated these claim (unless you count Vince Foster). As for Clinton being clean - give me a break. His White House fires the career travel office people and trumped up baseless FBI charges to cover their tracks so they could give a few friends a cool new job - this is fact. This White House illegally obtained the FBI files for 900 of their political enemies - this is fact. This president was a partner in a very illegal land deal that raped a savings and loan and cost the tax payers millions of dollars - this is fact. Ken Starr could not charge Clinton with crimes in these cases but the fact that he was involved is undisputed. Bill Clinton is first elected president to be duly impeached by congress - this makes him the dirtiest president in history because not even Nixon was impeached. The Democrats spent many more years and many more millions of dollars on Iran/Contra and proved nothing - no impeachment - not even close. I think that makes Reagan and Bush about 100 times cleaner than Bill "the first elected president to be impeached" Clinton. Editors, join use in reality.

What a silly statement - Editor are you that naïve and are you that susceptible to propaganda. First, Jesse Helms CAN NOT spend money by himself. Second, your knowledge of El Salvador is lacking. Reagan backed the freedom fighters (those fighting for democracy) - the democrat speaker of the house backed the socialist guerillas headed by Daniel Ortega. The Democrat Speaker of the house went to El Salvador and had his picture taken with the socialist dictator wanna-be and pledged to do anything to kill Reagan's funding of the fighting for democracy - this lead to the illegal amendment pased by the democrat controlled house (remember the bad ole days)- the Bolin (sp) Amendment - that became the center of Iran/Contra witch hunt (this amendment no longer exists). The war in El Salvador was disgusting on both sides and both sides participated in "was crimes". Reagan backed the winning side and El Salvador is democracy. War is not pretty. Propaganda is worst - while you are buying propaganda videotapes, don't forget to pick up the "Clinton Chronicles". What amazes me is your obsession with finding excuses for Clinton - if all that you say was true it would still have no relationship or bearing on Clinton and therefore you can not use it as some kinda weird excuse to justify Clinton's perjury and obstruction of justice.. As for your claim that 30 million is used to teach others to brutally torture thousands - what baseless innuendo, get some REAL proof before you spout rumors or information you gathered from a propaganda pages. Message: p align="center">Comments on USARSA

Since USARSA went on-line in February 1997, the Public Affairs Office has received many requests to "hear the other side of the story": thus, we are providing information from clippings, broadcasts, speeches and letters for all to read.
Paul Mulshine, Star-Ledger (N.J.) Columnist
"The so-called "liberation theologists" of the 1960s and after developed a love for political power that overcame their love for peace. When the wars broke out in Central America in the late 1970s, they didn't hesitate to endorse the use of modern weaponry to attain the old-world goal of gaining earthly power over their fellow man."
"The SOA Watch people had originally gotten Azzolina's (N.J. Assemblyman) attention with claims that the School of the Americas is what they termed a "school of assassins". Their propaganda technique is to take virtually every atrocity that ever occured in Latin America--except, of course, the many atrocities of the Sandinistas--and link it to a graduate of the School of the Americas. Typical was their assertion that the assassination of Archbishop Romero was the SOA's fault because Romero was killed by Roberto D'Aubuisson, a Salvadoran colonel who had once attended the SOA. The impression created is that D'Aubuisson was coached in assassination by the evil Americans at Fort Benning. One problem: D'Aubuisson's sole link to the school was that he had taken a course in radio operations long before El Salvador's civil war began."
"Then there was the Guatemalan general Hector Gramajo, derided by SOA Watch as a School of the Americas graduate. Actually, he didn't attend the SOA. He did attend Harvard, however, so perhaps that school should be shut down too."
"It was illogic like that which created false impressions of the school, Azzolina said. He had since requested that the SOA Watch take his name off the press release and he told me he intended to oppose the bill."
"The next day I went to Trenton to see what would happen to the bill. It was a frightening experience. The group held a press conference in an Assembly hearing room. As I entered the room I realized that I seemed to be the only journalist there. The rest of the room was full of SOA Watch people. Bourgeois began to address the faithful. "New Jersey is going to send a signal to the rest of the country that we are not going to tolerate a school that encourages terrorism and torture," he said. All around the room faces glowed. The atmosphere was reminiscent of Managua back when the Sandinistas were denouncing the evil yanqui. Bourgeois uttered the usual string of lies and half-truths about the U.S. military and his apostles nodded approvingly."
"I spoke to several of these people and not one had the slightest idea what communism is, was, or had been. My favorite was Linda Panetta...Anyhow, when I called her up the night before I asked her about a quote she had given to our reporter. She had told him that none of the Latin-American Marxists were Marxists and that "There has never been a Communist threat, in Latin America. "What about Cuba?" I asked. She began to hem and haw. Then she hung up. (A common pattern among SOA Watch people, by the way. They are so used to getting softball questions from the liberal media that at the first sign of critical thinking they end the conversation."
"The only concession to sanity was that the Assembly leadership had cancelled a speech by Bourgeois, Azzolina told me. In other words, the New Jersey Assembly came within inches of letting a man who had patrolled with a Marxist guerrilla group--one that was responsible for the deaths of 29 American servicemen during the 1980s--take its floor for a round of America-bashing."
"Having been so thouroughly rejected by history, Roy Bourgeois and his followers seem determined to find some sort of moral vindication. But they refuse to do so honestly. They refuse to stick to the arguments they made back when the Cold War was still in balance...They say that now with the Cold War ended, it is no longer necessary for the U.S. to play the sort of role it once did in Central America. This argument has great resonance with many Americans who would not for a second support Castro, the Sandinistas, or any of the other Marxist so popular with SOA Watch."

Gen. C.E. Wilhelm
Commander in Chief, U.S. Southern Command
Letter to Senator McConnell, Chairman on Appropriations
As you know, our engagement strategy has always been to encourage Latin American military institutions to evolve from largely autonomous actors in regional affairs and domestic politics to a more professional model subordinate to democratically elected civil authority...The School of the Americas has provided this foundation and continues to spark change for the militaries of Latin America.
Training is a long-term investment in a positive relationship with our Latin American allies and is consistent with the changing political and economic environment. The School of the Americas has reinforced these ideals and trained nearly 60,000 officers, cadets, noncommissioned officers and civilians from Latin America and the United States over the past 50 years.
International training programs at the School of the Americas expose students to U.S. military doctrine and practices. These include instruction for foreign military members and civilians on developing defense resource management systems, regard for democratic values and civilian control of the military, respect for human rights and the rule of law. We have witnessed tremendous progress in that virtually all Latin American countries have representative governments. However, many of these democracies are embryonic and their fragile nature serves as a reminder that democracy is not irreversible. It requires nurturing and so do the militaries as they assume new roles. The School of the Americas engages some 1000 Latin American military members every year in the Spanish Language. This represents one thousand opportunities to quietly deepen the roots of democracy.
I consider the School of the Americas so vital to our national security interests that if I were to lose it today, I would only request to reestablish it tomorrow...at a considerable price. That is why I wanted to take this opportunity to personally reaffirm to you my strong support for the School of the Americas as you and the members of the committee make important decisions that will influence achievement of U.S. goals and objectives in Latin America.
(Letter to Senator Mitch McConnell -- 29 July 1998)
Maj. Gen. (Retired) Wallace Nutting
Biddeford Pool, Maine
Since World War II, a part of this Army has trained and positively influenced many soldiers and armies worldwide. One small organization, the Army School of the Americas, which was established in the 1940s and moved to Ft. Benning, Ga., in the 1980s, has trained and positively motivated more than 60,000 Latin Americans.
Some thuggish few of those graduates from particularly violent cultures have repressed freedom and human rights. For that, a small group of radicals...periodically call for the school's closure claiming it teaches torture, murder, rape and other crimes.
These charges are outrageous and libelous, and do a tremendous disservice to America's soldiers. It is the worst form of stereotyping and it is wrong. The vast majority of those trained at the School of the Americas and comparable U.S. Navy and Air Force schools have made good and important contributions to their own countries.

Senator Feinstein:
I've addressed this issue to your office once before and received
no response, but I think it's important, so I'd like to do so once more.
I am disturbed by comments made yesterday I believe (7/23) by Congressman Joseph P Kennedy
regarding his campaign to close the US Army School Of The Americas at Fort Benning,
Georgia. He claims that human rights abuses perpetrated by SOA graduates in Latin American
countries are doctrinal to the US Army training those officers have received at the
school. My experience as an Army Vietnam combat veteran compels me to think this is not
true. For as many human rights abuses as were committed by US troops in that conflict (and
there were many), NONE were doctrinal. Rather they were human. If you recall the massacre
at My Lai for example, it was finally stopped by a US Army helicopter crew who were
determined not to let it continue. It is this concern for what is right that is constantly
inculcated into US armed forces personnel, the contrary committed by a relative few
notwithstanding.
What disturbs me furthermore about Kennedy's comments is how easy a target the military is
for someone with a broader agenda. This is somewhat akin to the recent
"Tailwind" fiasco at CNN: Sure, go ahead, disinform on the military. Who's going
to say anything. Well...we know how that turned out...at least to a somewhat more
constructionist extent. It's always much easier to tear something down than to build it up
or try to improve upon it. Should Harvard University, or wherever Kennedy went to school,
be closed because a relatively small minority of its alumni has at some point engaged in
criminal or other anti-social behavior?
I am not saying that military activities should not be monitored. This is essential to a
democracy and civilian governance. But to insist on closing the School of the Americas
based on a very concerted campaign of disinformation does no service whatsoever to the
United States and Latin America. Rather, I strongly feel it is in our country's best
interests to foster strong military ties with as many other countries in our hemisphere as
we can, knowing that it is also in our interests to "understand" the military
thinking of their leadership as well for an obviously wide variety of militarily related
reasons.
One other important point: If we don't take the most pro-active role in training and
working with the military forces of Latin American nations, there are many other countries
not necessarily friendly to US interests who would be only too happy to fill such a void.
Thank you very much.

If I hear you right, trying to prevent war, preventing murder and torture, saving the environment, working with the rest of the nations in the UN, treating tobacco as the drug it is, being afraid for our children and our own safety on our city street because other children, drunks, MEN and other criminals carry guns...all these things make us naive and therefore should not be considered as proper public policy issues? Do I hear you right?
Just because human beings are not perfect doesn't mean that we have to stop trying to preserve this planet for our children. Just because some people are idealistic and want to help the world doesn't make them naive nor stupid. Some people do actually think about others in this world and act in such a way that their presence here on earth makes the world a better place. They are kind and loving and generous, not paranoid, mean, narrow or righteous. I am offended by your assumptions.

Larry Flynt's Investigator
Media Monitor
The Wall Street Journal lead editorial of January 18 charged that pornographer Larry Flynt, the publisher of Hustler magazine, had launched "a blackmail campaign designed to intimidate" United States Senators "into giving the President a pass." Noting that Flynt had already publicized dirt he had dug up about the private lives of two members of the House, Bob Livingston of Louisiana and Bob Barr of Georgia, the Journal asked, "Who can doubt that Senators, if they vote the wrong way, will be next?"
The Journal said, "One Dan Moldea has appeared from almost nowhere to volunteer as the source of Mr. Flynt’s dirt." Moldea had told the Washington Times a few days earlier, (quote) "We have a lot of these guys dead bang, and the evidence is clear. But they haven’t been going on TV or on the floor of Congress, shooting their mouths off, trying to take the moral high ground against Clinton. And as a consequence, we’re throwing it back in the river. We’re concentrating on people who have been very visible on this."
Dan Moldea did not appear from almost nowhere. A year ago he published a book about the death of former White House deputy counsel Vincent Foster. When he began working on the book, he came to Accuracy in Media for help. We knew that he had been associated with the far-left Institute for Policy Studies several years ago, but he assured us that he had no axe to grind and that he would be guided by the evidence. We took him at his word. We gave him copies of the many reports we had written about the case and either loaned him or told him where to get books that covered the evidence in great detail.
We knew that if he was an honest reporter he would reach the same conclusion that every honest reporter or independent investigator who had studied the case thoroughly had reached. That is that Foster did not commit suicide in the park where his body was found. As Moldea’s investigation progressed, we heard reports that he was telling the U.S. Park Police officers who had botched the official investigation that he was on their side. When we asked him about this, he said he had to tell them that to get them to talk.
But when his book came out, we found that it was nothing but a defense of the findings of the official investigations. It didn’t provide answers to any of the serious questions that AIM and others had raised about those findings. Moldea got some information from the police that cast strong doubt on claims made by the official investigators, but he buried it in the endnotes where few readers would see it.
But we were surprised to find Moldea working for Larry Flynt in his scheme to find dirt about Republican members of Congress that could be used to help Clinton hang on to the presidency. Regnery, a conservative house, had been conned into publishing Moldea’s whitewash of the Foster investigations, and we had been conned into helping him. But we didn’t think he would stoop to helping a porn publisher intimidate members of Congress.

Pollsters doubt voters will make Republicans pay in 2000
Independent pollster John Zogby says his surveys are turning up "very little intensity in the nation as a whole" on the impeachment issue despite Democratic warnings of voter revenge.
"America wants this over with, but they want Bill Clinton punished," Mr. Zogby said. "it's as much in the interests of the Democrats and the Republicans to find a suitable punishment."
Mr. Zogby said some GOP senators like Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, John Ashcroft of Missouri and others up for re-election in states with a large swing vote "have got problems."
Ostensibly, the unusual unity among House Republicans who voted to impeach Mr. Clinton last month would seem to strengthen their support among their base vote. But some GOP strategists aren't so sure.

If you are really as concerned about human suffering, why do you focus only on the unborn? It is not in the Republican nature to alleviate the suffering of those who are already born? Why is this? It has always bothered me that your concern regarding the suffering of mankind stops when mankind is born? Could you answer this for me please?
The other thing that bothers me about the GOP is that if you are really so concerned about the suffering of the unborn why don't you work to PREVENT the suffering from occuring in the first place? Why are you opposed to the abortion pill? This causes no suffering. Nature expels fetuses from the womb in far greater numbers than abortions. Why do you oppose birth control measures?
Why doesn't the GOP spend some of its money on heavy advertising to young people to abstain from sex? Why doesn't the GOP take some of it's money and create Abstinence Clubs where people can meet each other knowing that they don't have to "put out." Some churches, like the Mormon church, have this rule, but I would like to see non-religious clubs where people of all belief systems can meet without the religious overtones. Just abstinence-for-survival organizations. As a female I always resented that females eventually had to decide whether to "give in" or "give up" the male of her choice. Maybe she can postpone the inevitable for two weeks, perhaps four weeks (that's a lot) but then F-Day arrives -- give in or get out.
