CLINTON IMPEACHED by KANGAROO COURT:
VOWS NEVER TO QUIT!
Poll: Clinton job approval rating hits all-time high - 72%

WASHINGTON, Dec. 20 —  President Bill Clinton’s job approval rating reached new heights in the wake of the impeachment vote Saturday, according to the latest NBC News poll. The poll showed Clinton’s approval rating rose from 68 percent in a similar poll Tuesday to 72 percent after the House passed two articles of impeachment against him.

THE NBC POLL also found that 62 percent of the respondents said he should serve out his term — up 11 percentage points from Tuesday’s survey. The number of those who said the president should resign dropped 10 points from 44 percent to 34 percent. The poll of 510 adults had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percent.        Clinton also held his own in a CBS/New York Times poll conducted Saturday. Sixty-six percent of the respondents thought it would be better for the country if Clinton did not resign, compared with 69 percent before the vote. The same 661 adults were interviewed last week before the House vote and gave almost identical answers on the question of resignation.        Interviewers in the CBS/New York Times poll found that 63 percent of the respondents would prefer it if a compromise, like a censure or a fine, were worked out instead of holding a trial in the Senate. However 57 percent said they thought that the Senate would not compromise on the issue and that there would be a trial. The margin of error for the CBS/New York Times poll was plus or minus 4 percentage points.        After the vote, the president and his aides said they hoped to find a “constitutional and fair” means to end his predicament short of a trial in the Senate. He also vowed not to resign, pledging to keep working “until the last hour of the last day” of his term. MSNBC..

Citizens and Media Attack Right Wing Radicals
GOP Commits Political Suicide

Pushing back on GOP coup d’etat
MSNBC NEWS - by Eric Alterman

Dec. 19 —  The crisis is finally upon us. President Clinton has been impeached. The Republicans have their victory. The term “high crimes and misdemeanors” has been degraded to include lying about sex. The most serious sanction in our constitutional system has been reduced to a weapon of partisan warfare.

"If the Republicans want to commit political suicide by pursuing the path that has destroyed their two most recent leaders, well then, that’s their right. But they cannot be allowed to drag down the republic with them."

The impeachment vote is being driven by the ascendant radical wing of the party that, under Tom DeLay’s guidance, controls its fund-raising. Those who dare to buck DeLay and his crusade risk inspiring a well-funded conservative challenger without any help from the national party. Those who vote his way have two years to try to make the country forget, or to hide behind the excuse that the impeachment vote was not designed to remove the president, but only to signal the seriousness of his crimes and let the Senate decide the matter.

."Now is the time for all good men and women to come to the aid of their Constitution." MSNBC NEWS ...MORE....

BAD NEWS FOR THE GOP

Angry Voters Quitting The GOP

San Francisco Chronicle, Friday December 25, 1998
WASHINGTON - In a small but telling sign of the political fallout from the House impeachment vote, a handful of local election officials in the San Francisco Bay Area and other parts of the country say a surprising number of people have officially changed their party registration from Republican to Democrat.

Once again (boy, this is gettin' scary) I must agree with the Editors. Once the truth about Danny Williams was made public I made sure I washed my hands of it publically. When I screw up (as in propogating a lie) I admit it, apologize and try to right the wrong. After all, isn't this what we are asking Clinton to do? Sadly, he lacks the strength of character to do so. This is the whole reason our country is being dragged through the mud. As Rush would say : "Character matters. Words mean things." Let's try to live up to the same standards we are demanding of our leaders.

"One might argue, as Judge Nixon does, that his false statements were not material ..... But Judge Nixon took an oath to tell the truth and the whole truth. As a grand jury witness, it was not for him to decide what would be material. That was for the grand jury to decide. So I am going to vote guilty. ..... Judge Nixon lied to the grand jury. He misled the grand jury. These acts are criminal and warrant impeachment."

MY MOTHER IS A DEMOCRATIC COUNCILWOMAN WHO HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING YOU AT A LUNCHEON FOR DEOMOCRATIC WOMAN IN OFFICE. THOUGH THIS MESSAGE MAY BE LOST IN THE URGENCY OF THE POLITICAL ARENA OF EVENTS CURRENTLY HAPPENING, I WANTED TO TAKE THIS TIME TO TELL YOU THAT THERE ARE A GREAT DEAL OF MEN AND WOMAN (I BEING ONE OF THEM) WHO DO SUPPORT YOU AND MR. REGARDLESS WHAT HAS BROUGHT US T0 THE PRESENT SITUATION, I THINK IT IS TERRIBLE THAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE GIVEN CARTE BLANCHE TO BLATENLY COMMENT NEGATIVELY ON THE LEADER OF OUR COUNTRY WHO IS STILL IN OFFICE. THE GIMMICS AND MARKETING OF SUCH GARBAGE AS THE "GROWING NOSE WATCH" I FIND OUTRAGEOUS. SIMPLY PUT THE LITTLE PEOPLE WITH THE BIG MOUTHS HAVE NOW STUMBLED UPON A FALSE SENSE OF POWER, INCLUDING JUDGEMENT AND PUNISHMENT OF WHAT LOOKS TO BE IN THEIR CONTROL. FORGETTING ANY SELF-INDULGED SINS OF THEIR OWN THE WISH TO IGNORE OR DENY. IT IS MY OPINION THAT THIS ENTIRE MATTER IS SOLEY BASED ON THAT, OF THE SENATE AS WELL... POWER. MR. CLINTON HAS IT AND THEY WANT TO JUMP IN AND TAKE IT OVER. I DO NOT BELIEVE IT IS ABOUT ANYTHING MORE THAN THAT, NOR WOULD IT HAVE GOTTEN THIS FAR OR OUT OF CONTROL DUE TO THE NEED OF CONTROL. I AM SORRY FOR THE SITUATION YOU BOTH FIND YOURSELVES IN REGARDLESS OF ANY WRONGDOING OR NOT ON EITHER OF YOUR PARTS. I THINK MR. CLINTON IS ONE OF THE GREATEST PRESIDENTS THIS WORLD WILL HAVE KNOWN, AND HAD HE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO RUN AGAIN TODAY, I WOULD VOTE FOR HIM. HEARING SUCH NONSENSE COMMENTS AS "SHE SHOULD LEAVE HIM" IS SO INCREDIBLE AS IF EVEN IF YOU WANTED TO, YOUR POSITION AS THE FIRST LADY WOULD ALLOW YOU TO ACT LIKE A SCORNED TRAILER PARK LOVER. I WISH YOU ALL GOOD LUCK IN THE FUTURE WHATEVER THE OUTCOME. KNOW THERE ARE MANY SUPPORTERS FOR YOU BOTH. WHATEVER THE PUNISHMENT, YOU BOTH SHOW GREAT COURAGE AND CHARACTER THAT MAKES ME PROUD I ELECTED THE RIGHT MAN (AND WOMAN) FOR THE JOB. WELL DONE. GOD BLESS. LISA MENNELLA

Senator Herb Kohl (and at least 26 other current Democratic Senators) seem to have sided with me ten years ago. Quote: "...it was not for him to decide what would be material." And since this is not a regular Jury but the Senate (as it was ten years ago) I respectfully submit that what a prosecutor may or may not have done is irrelevant in this situation.

"When does this famous Hustler Magazine come out anyway?"

I would have no way of knowing. But I feel sure Larry will plug his infamous smut filled "publication" tonight on C-SPAN as he is only in this for the money (you know, like Tripp and Goldberg).

I do not usually bother to read messages typed in ALL CAPS like the one above by "LISA MENNELLA" but I did and it brought home to me just how completely ignorant of the Constitution and the laws of this nation many people can be. I will not attack Ms. MENNELLA personally but several of her statements were so offensive I cannot let them pass unanswered:

"I FIRST DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THE INVESTIGATION CONDUCTED IN THE PAULA JONES CASE WAS ABLE TO BE LITIGATED WHILE THE PRESIDENT WAS STILL IN OFFICE."

The Supreme Court of the United States of America carefully considered arguments from both sides and decided that the case should be tried while the President was still in office. You may not like the decision but it stands nonetheless.

"I THINK IT IS TERRIBLE THAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE GIVEN CARTE BLANCHE TO BLATENLY COMMENT NEGATIVELY ON THE LEADER OF OUR COUNTRY WHO IS STILL IN OFFICE."

This was particularly offensive. We live in a free society. The First amendment guarantees us the right to speak out against the Evil that Bill Clinton is any time and any place that we wish. Read the Constitution for God's sake.

"I AM SORRY FOR THE SITUATION YOU BOTH FIND YOURSELVES IN REGARDLESS OF ANY WRONGDOING OR NOT ON EITHER OF YOUR PARTS."

So the President can have "CARTE BLANCHE" to break the law but the People cannot have "CARTE BLANCHE" to speak freely. Astounding.

"HEARING SUCH NONSENSE COMMENTS AS "SHE SHOULD LEAVE HIM" IS SO INCREDIBLE AS IF EVEN IF YOU WANTED TO, YOUR POSITION AS THE FIRST LADY WOULD ALLOW YOU TO ACT LIKE A SCORNED TRAILER PARK LOVER."

So, leaving a husband for repeated instances of Adultery is "ACT[ing] LIKE A SCORNED TRAILER PARK LOVER"? I only hope her husband does not give her reason to deal with this situation first hand. I suspect, if she has any backbone whatsoever, she would "ACT LIKE A SCORNED TRAILER PARK LOVER". Incredible.

"...PROUD I ELECTED THE RIGHT MAN (AND WOMAN) FOR THE JOB."

This is so offensive I cannot bring myself to comment on it with language suitable for this public forum. Suffice it to say that I do not remember seeing Hillary Clinton on the ballot in '92 or '96.

If this kind of "thinking" (for lack of a better word) is typical of Americans I now fully understand the high poll numbers our Perjurer in Chief now commands. The End cannot be far.

Q Joe, on the four charges of perjury, they're all lumped together. You're making the argument that the problem here is that some senators might believe one of them, but not believe the other three and it's essentially unfair. How -- I don't quite understand what you're arguing here.

MR. LOCKHART: Well, you have four areas. You could have a situation potentially, where 17 senators believed that the President committed perjury in one area, 17 believed in the second area, 17 believed in the third area, and 17 believed in the fourth area, giving you one over the magic number. So you're asking people to vote on multiple charges without giving them the ability to look at each charge, weigh the evidence and make a reasoned judgment.

Q If somebody is accused of stealing horses, and 17 thinks he stole this horse, 17 this horse, 17 this -- they're going to hang him because he's a horse thief. (Laughter.)

MR. LOCKHART: Right.

Q Well, I mean, so I don't understand your argument.

MR. LOCKHART: Sam, I don't understand your horse allusion, so call us even.

Q What about sheep?

I just thought that this was funny. By the way, the person asking the horse question was Sam Donaldson. Even Sam understands the issue here - if some believe that Clinton perjured himself about being "alone", and some believe he perjured himself about "gifts", or "cigars", or whatever - the point is he is a perjurer.

Message: I believe that the issue of sex in the white house is irrelevent. To often Americans have been convinced of the White House spin that Congress is going to impeach the president over sex. The real issue is perjury. Some people claim that since the perjury was part of a sexual harrassment trial, it is not im- portant. [EDITORS NOTE: Perjury has not be proved. A man is innocent until proved guilty. That is the American Way. TRIAL BY INNUENDO IS DISHONEST. It is not for you to judge.] Well if we want to establish a law that says, "crimes about sex do not matter," and go against the constitution, then I say the judicial system should not consider rape, sexual harrassment and other sex crimes illegal. In the mean time, though, since crimes remotely related to sex, are still crimes, it is our constitutional obligation to try the president for impeachment. The president can not be held above the law. If we do hold him above the law, we violate the intentions that the framers of our constitution had in mind 200 years ago. So I don't want to hear from you stupid angry dikes that the impeachment is about sex. You should try and do I little research on the matter, as opposed to swollowing every thing the White House says. (no pun intended) [EDITORS NOTE: You are a hateful homophobe calling people "stupid angry dikes" Who exactly are you referring to?]

As for Larry Flynt, I heard that even Geraldo was let down by the "dirt" he had on Bob Barr. It seems that Bob refused to answer some questions under oath during the divorce proceedings with his second wife. He took the Fifth, as it were. Imagine that. Geraldo even said (I'm paraphrasing here) that Bob was a better lawyer than Clinton in that he knew he was better off taking the Fifth than lying! Bob must have been grinning from ear to ear when he heard that! Well, Larry, looks like round one goes to the Republicans. In other news - Jeepers, if Clinton would have followed the Bob Barr model he would not have been impeached and he would not be in trouble. It just goes to show that the Democrats need to learn from Republicans. Democrat Larry Flynt also tried to made a big deal out of Barr paying for an abortion - only problem is the WOMEN was exercising her right to choose and Barr was up holding her wishes. Good thing Barr do not lie under oath or to the American people or he would be in the same amount of trouble as Clinton. Message: !--plsfield:headline--> Clinton Pays Paula Jones $850,000

By John Solomon
Associated Press Writer
Tuesday, January 12, 1999; 4:48 p.m. EST

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Clinton mailed a check for $850,000 to Paula Jones on Tuesday to settle her sexual harassment allegations, officially ending the sensational legal battle that cast his presidency into crisis.

In the week his Senate impeachment trial was to resume, the president drew about $375,000 from his and Hillary Rodham Clinton's personal funds and got the rest of the settlement, about $475,000, from an insurance policy, a White House official told The Associated Press.

``This ends it. The check is being fed-exed'' to Bill McMillan, one of Mrs. Jones' lawyers, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The official said the personal funds were drawn from the Clinton's blind trust, which was valued in their financial disclosure statement at between $1 million and about $5 million. None of the money was drawn from his legal defense fund, which raises money from private citizens to defray his legal bills, the official said.

While the check ends the litigation, the fallout from the controversy still haunts the president. Mrs. Jones' lawsuit brought to light the president's affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky and set in motion a criminal investigation that resulted in a historic House vote last month to impeach Clinton.

The president files his trial brief on Wednesday, and House prosecutors on Thursday will begin presenting to the Senate their case that the president obstructed justice in the Jones lawsuit and lied about it before a federal grand jury.

Clinton reached a settlement with Mrs. Jones on Nov. 13 after four years of litigation.

Under that settlement, Clinton didn't admit any wrongdoing or apologize and simply agreed to make a cash settlement to Mrs. Jones, a former Arkansas state worker.

Mrs. Jones alleged that Clinton, when he was governor of Arkansas, made a crude advance in a room at a Little Rock hotel in 1991. Clinton has steadfastly denied her accusation.

Clinton testified in that lawsuit on Jan. 17, 1998, and during questioning about his relationships with other women, denied he had ``sexual relations'' with Ms. Lewinsky. Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr got permission to investigate whether Clinton was trying to obstruct the lawsuit.

Clinton was forced to acknowledge a relationship with Ms. Lewinsky in testimony before a federal grand jury last August. Starr's investigation led to a referral to the House of Representatives accusing Clinton of several criminal acts.

U.S. District Judge Susan Webber Wright dismissed the lawsuit last April 1, ruling that Mrs. Jones' allegations, even if true, wouldn't qualify as a case of sexual harassment.

An appeal of that dismissal was pending before a federal appeals court when the settlement was reached.

Well, now that the World Renowned Constitutional Scholar "Father Time" has corrected the House, Senate and the Supreme Court we can all fold up our tents and go home. I sure wish he would have pointed this out months ago. He could saved us a ton of money and time (and Clinton a great deal of embarrassment) if he'd just spoken out sooner!

Dude, I will gladly supply you with a link to The Constitution of the United States of America so that you may point out for the rest of us exactly which sections the House, Senate, Supreme Court and Clinton's army of lawyers have overlooked. Please be specific and detailed in your analysis (as we have come to expect of you).

"The Rules Committe of the US Senate are making up the rules as they go along."

Pardon me but, isn't that the function of the Rules Committee or did I miss something?

"...Rush Limbaugh, who by the way is a tub of lard."

For the record, Rush has lost more than sixty pounds in the last year or so. He is now rather slim. The Clinton scandals have kept him quite busy and added to his substantial wealth.

"Are you stoopid not to realize..."

Also, for the record, it's spelled "stupid". I just love life's little ironies...

Message: Yep - Rep. Bob Barr has finally been revealed for what he is: A degenerate hypocrite sleazeball with substantially lower morals than Bill Clinton ever had, and a closet overflowing with big nasty skeletons. Last night, Larry Flynt revealed the details of Bob Barr's filthy and depraved personal lifestyle, which has included lying about sex and abortion under oath in a civil court case. Barr's second divorce (he's had so many marriages, you know) involved a trial in which Barr lied about his long-term adulterous relationship with a woman named Jerri Dobbin, the woman Barr destroyed his second marriage for and eventually married as his third wife. Barr's initial answers indicate that he denied the relationship under oath - and because even Jerri has admitted that the adulterous affair took place, that's felony perjury. Barr then had his divorce lawyer assert a privilege under Georgia law with the intent of obscuring the truth, with Barr then taking his lawyer's cue, saying that answering could bring "public disgrace and infamy" upon his family. His subsequent answers to direct questions about his adultery were met with the same answer, with Barr continually evading answering the questions.

The record of Barr's divorce trial filed against him by his second wife, Gail Barr, shows clearly that Little Bob refused to answer the questions:  "Have you been faithful to her sexually during the marriage?" and "Have you ever lived with Jerry Dobbin?" a clear and direct reference to Barr's longtime mistress and eventual third wife, Jerri. Barr also attempted to refuse to answer plaintiff's questions about whether he had coerced his second wife into having an abortion, but was ordered to answer, and eventually acknowledged that he had done so - and had paid for it! So Bob Barr is not only a hypocrite when it comes to adultery - he's also a hypocrite

His other option was what? His wife made a stupid decision to kill her child. He could have turned his back on her when she needed his support. He could have treated her like a child or a possession and forbade her to have it. He could have added to her grief rather than try to support her (cruel, immoral) decision, OR he could do what any honorable man would do: he could support his wife even when he thought her decision was wrong. You'd have ripped him either way. Bob Barr is far more mature and honorable than you appear to be.

Also, I want one thing perfectly clear; If Bob Barr did indeed actually commit perjury I want his butt thrown clear out of DC and into prison. And if he did indeed encourage his wife to kill their child I want to know so that I never make the mistake of voting for him. But considering the source of the evidence I'm not convinced yet. After killing his child I can see why he might have decided he couldn't stay with his second wife. And since she sold embarrassing information to that Paragon of Virtue, Larry Flynt, I suspect I can tell what kind of person she really is. Not to mention that she is "destitute" as Larry put it, which indicates she can't even support herself in The Land of Opportunity. She seems like real loser from what I can see. Fortunately for her, Bob Barr is far to much a gentleman to say embarrassing things about her in public.

OK, Zippy, look at it this way. Let's imagine that Bob Barr and the GOP got their way and banned abortions. Obviously Bob Barr would have done exactly the same thing, let his wife have an abortion... except that since there would be no legitimate doctors who could perform that abortion she would have to go back to the old days where women died of infection trying to abort the child. Except, of course, in Bob Barr's case. He has the cash to fly his wife to another country and get it done, the rest of us poor slobs would be in the back alleys with knitting needles, etc., Is this the world you really want Zippy? Think about it.

I would prefer Republicans to act like mature adults and focus instead on preventive measures e.g: on a pill or implant that temporarily sterilizes the male until he is ready to support children, and to encourage, and even financially support young women to have Norplant or IUD's implanted to avoid having children. AND...tighten up the fathering of illegitimate children so strictly that God help the male who fathers a child and does not support it, emotionally, physically and financially.

I'm 100 percent for attacking this problem at every level BUT making infanticide legal legitimizes the killing of a human being. Just give up trying to convince people like me that Abortion is anything less evil than murder. The answer is so damn simple that people like me cannot believe that people like you don't get it. If you have an urge to copulate knowing you could make a child you will have to murder it's the exact same thing as having an urge to drive a hundred miles an hour through a school zone knowing you might kill a child through your reckless behavior! When I have an urge to sight my sniper rifle in at a thousand yards and drive to Washington DC I resist the urge because it would be wrong! The only argument you have is that it's legal. Would you legalize the murder of children up to three months old? What the hell is the difference? (Don't bother answering. We will never agree.)

This is no where near obvious. Bob Barr has demonstrated that he obeys the law. If Abortion were not legal he would probably A) have taken greater care not to get his second wife pregnant knowing she didn't want another child (presumably she would have also been more careful) and B) he would have the law on his side to convince her to have the child and give it away if she really didn't want it! He would have morality and the law on his side! Not all people ignore laws they don't like!

Can we please just agree to disagree on this? It's getting tiresome... <

In less than one month Bill Clinton’s approval rating has dropped 16 points!!!!!!!

Clinton is currently 7 appoints away from 50% DISAPRROVAL!

This must mean America is waking up and they are ready for the Senate to remove Clinton from office!!!

Trust me – even I am not ready to believe that. The numbers I site are real but my conclusion can not easily be supported by the numbers – just as Clinton’s temporary bump did not mean half of what the liberals claimed. The point here is simple – this illustrates why we can not govern by the polls. Which is real – Clinton December 18 rating of 72% approval or today’s 57% approval? Have 16% of the American people changed their minds about Clinton. I don’t really know. Polls can and are manipulated – the White House did a great PR job in December and was able to get an unrealistic bump in the polls. This is why the Congress or the President can NOT govern based on polls (they are not real). Bush at one time had poll numbers (approval) near 90% (something that will only happen in Clinton’s wet dreams) – so what did that get Bush? So, you liberal followers of the polls – Pollcrats is the new name for the Democrat party (sometime referred to as the Hustler Party or the POP [Party of Porn])– I guess it is time to start jumping out of windows (or Mac’s, depending on you taste) because Clinton’s approval is dropping like a stone.

"Libby Dole will be president"

Well, I hope you got this one. But I wouldn't give you better than 8 to 5 on it.

"Clinton will serve out his term"
"The GOP will lose both the House and the Senate"

I lumped these together because they are mutually exclusive. If Clinton is not convicted then we can look forward to two more years of scandals. This guy has enough skeletons in his closet to fill every catacomb on Earth. Look forward to the real possibility of William Jefferson Clinton being the first president in history to get impeached twice. See how the party does during thatspectacle! It will never be over.

"A third party will have many candidates and strong representation in Congress"

Two words : Ross Perot.

"The GOP will not control Congress again for many generations"

We're talking fruit fly generations, right?

"Hillary Clinton will be unofficial president of the world and launch many good projects"

A) She's already thinks she is unofficial president of the world and
B) Narf!

"Bill Clinton will waste no time ordering Reno to fire Starr the instant the Impeachment fiasco comes to a close."

He won't be her boss then. Maybe he can get Al to do it for him.

"There will be dancing in the streets around the world and around burning effigies of Kenneth Starr."

Walk up to a dude in Nairobi and say "Ken Starr". I'm guessing you get a blank stare.

"Starr will be remembered in ignominy along with McCarthy"

Hey now, be nice! I think he and that Lennon dude wrote some really good songs. Lay off already. (Two bonus points for the fifty cent word though!)

All in good fun, seriously ;}

Message: THE RIGHT'S EVIL EXPLAINED

By DAVID GELERNTER

EVERYONE knows that conservatives are intemperate hotheads, always shooting off their mouths to the sadness and disgust of responsible people. Take Ben Stein, for example - the actor, writer, lawyer, TV-game-show host and wild-eyed radical of the right. Stein writes a monthly column for the American Spectator. This month, he explains why the cases of President Clinton and Richard Nixon seem so enormously different. For one thing, "Nixon had the unelected media bosses strongly against him," Stein writes, "sliming him day and night; Clinton has them defending him, sliming his enemies."

Which is exactly what you would expect from a right-wing wacko. True, Washington reporters are mostly Democrats - but that doesn't bias their reporting, as we know perfectly well because they've told us so themselves. And we know also that the press has covered the Lewinsky scandal in sufficient depth to make people sick - so how could it possibly be biased against Clinton's enemies? Poor Stein is out to lunch. But let's try to understand his bizarre ravings, for clinical purposes. Maybe we can learn something about the thought processes of fanatics.

Here's a quote from a recent "news analysis" on the news (not opinion) pages of The New York Times. This must be the sort of thing Stein was thinking about when he committed his latest right-wing error:

"For years," the Times reports, "academics have complained that politicians follow polls too closely. But in fact the Republican majority of the House could vote in defiance of the national polls [to impeach the President], and take a stand approved only by conservative Republicans, not because of courage, but because their districts have been drawn to insure their re-election, with diminished turnout that leaves the diehards of either side the only dependable voters."

Here's what we learn from the Times story:

1) If you vote in defiance of national polls, ordinarily that makes you courageous. But if you are a Republican congressman, it's just the opposite. You only voted that way because you had no choice.

2) If you are a congressman and your re-election is "insured," ordinarily that makes you free to vote your conscience. But if you are a Republican congressman, ironically it is (once again) just the opposite: Guaranteed re-election makes you especially craven. This phenomenon (known to scientists as The New York Times Courage Inversion Effect, probably) is a mystery that physiologists are still trying to unravel.

3) Only "conservative Republicans" approve of impeachment. DNA test results known only to the Times prove that the five House Democrats who voted to impeach are not actual Democrats at all. They are mutant fruitflies got up in party costumes, and they ought to be ashamed of themselves.

4) Congressional elections are so uncompetitive that only "diehards" bother to vote. Ordinarily these civic-minded people, the "dependable voters," are exactly the ones to whom Congress ought to pay attention, if it pays attention to anybody. But if the diehard voters are Republicans, it's just the opposite; Congress ought to ignore them. Everyone knows that conservative Republicans go to the polls only for the sneaky, underhanded purpose of electing persons who agree with them.

And there you have the danger inherent in democracy: that too many irresponsible people will vote merely to impose their own personal values on this country, instead of The New York Times's values.

Despite the tricky Times logic, the main idea is clear: House Republicans are guilty of attempting to get re-elected by pleasing their supporters. You might have mistaken Henry Hyde for a man of principle; thanks to the Times, you now know better. But the president's own lawyer, Charles Ruff, calls Bill Clinton's behavior "reprehensible." Isn't it possible that one or two of the 200-plus Republicans who voted to impeach acted on principle? Or partly on principle? Not according to the Times story.

So if conservatives like Stein would just cut out the paranoid mud-slinging, maybe we could get a little bipartisan consensus in this country.

Message: Fabius, you should not worry about nukes. Responsible nations that have the long range missile sites are well aware that setting off a "big one" like and MX missile will exceed the megatonnage within which we can survive, no matter where it goes off we will all die. So don't worry about it because "poof" you will be gone if it happens. Responsible nations don't like committing suicide so they are not going to let one off for fun, and it does not go off by accident either, there are too many safeguards. To sum up: Either way don't worry about the Big One because we will all be gone.

Now the tactile nuclear bombs are a real danger. The ones that can be driven in by a truck and cause serious damage in a local area. But then if you are going to worry about that, why not worry about all kinds of things, like anthrax, poisoning our water, chemical warfare, etc. There's lots to worry about here.

Since we live in San Francisco Bay Area we should worry about the Big One too, which is far more real than a nuclear bomb. There is a whole forest in Northern California that dropped right under the ocean. It's huge. The stumps of the redwood trees are all still there. In a special El Nino low tide occurrence you can see the underwater forest. San Francisco could drop under the ocean one day -- swoosh! -- gurgle, gurgle, gurgle! So if you log into the Hillary Clinton Forum one day and it's gone, just put your wet suit on and come visit us under the ocean.

Bill Clinton clearly attempted to get Betty Currie to lie if asked about his adulterous affair. As evidence of this accusation: an excerpt from the Starr Report (the content of which is not even challenged by Clintons lawyers) with commentary by Zippy the Wonder Slug. This is a bit long but I want to be thorough. Please bear with me...

B. The President Meets with Ms. Currie

Soon after the [Paula Jones] deposition, the President called Ms. Currie and asked her to come to the White House the next day. Ms. Currie acknowledged that, "It's rare for [the President] to ask me to come in on Sunday." The President wanted to discuss Ms. Lewinsky's White House visits.

At approximately 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 1998, Ms. Currie met with the President. The meeting took place at her desk outside the Oval Office. According to Ms. Currie, the President appeared "concerned." He told Ms. Currie that, during his deposition the previous day, he had been asked questions about Monica Lewinsky. Ms. Currie testified: "I think he said, 'There are several things you may want to know.'" [Indicates an intention to TELL, not ASK] He proceeded to make a series of statements, one right after the other:

[Bill Clinton knew these statements were false. He was clearly telling Betty that she had better remember things his way.]

Ms. Currie testified that, based on his demeanor and the way he made the statements, the President wanted her to agree with them.

Ms. Currie testified that she did, in fact, agree with the President when he said, "You were always there when she was there, right?" Before the grand jury, however, Ms. Currie acknowledged the possibility that Ms. Lewinsky could have visited the President when she was not at the White House. [Betty seems to have more loyalty than good sense. I can't wait to see her on the stand in the Senate.]

With respect to whether the President was "never really alone" with Ms. Lewinsky, Ms. Currie testified that there were several occasions when the President and Ms. Lewinsky were either in the Oval Office or in the study without anyone else present.

Ms. Currie explained that she did not consider the President and Ms. Lewinsky to be "alone" on such occasions because she was at her desk outside the Oval Office; accordingly, they were all together in the same "general area." Ms. Currie testified that "the President, for all intents and purposes, is never alone. There's always somebody around him." [By this definition of "alone" nobody on Earth has ever been alone since Adam!]

As to whether Ms. Lewinsky "came on" to him, Ms. Currie testified that she "would have no reason to know" whether Ms. Lewinsky ever "came on" to the President because Ms. Currie was not present all the time. Finally, as to whether she "could see and hear everything," Ms. Currie testified that she should not have agreed with the President. She testified that when the President and Ms. Lewinsky were alone together in the study, while Ms. Currie was at her desk, she could "hear nothing." [But they weren't "alone"!]

The President also made the following statement during their January 18, 1998 meeting, according to Ms. Currie: "[Monica Lewinsky] wanted to have sex with me, but I told her I couldn't do that." [Well, if she could have sex with him and at the same time he was not having sex with her, I suppose this could be true. Narf!]

When the President was questioned about this meeting with Ms. Currie in the grand jury, he testified that he recalled the conversation, but he denied that he was "trying to get Betty Currie to say something that was untruthful." Rather, the President testified that he asked a "series of questions" [that began with the statement "There are several things you may want to know."] in an effort to quickly "refresh [his] memory." The President explained: "I wanted to establish . . . that Betty was there at all other times in the complex, and I wanted to know what Betty's memory was about what she heard, what she could hear . . . . [a]nd I was trying to figure [it] out . . . in a hurry because I knew something was up." [As tempting as it is, I won't go there.]

In his grand jury testimony, the President acknowledged that, "in fairness," Ms. Currie "may have felt some ambivalence about how to react" to his statements. [Duh!] The President maintained that he was trying to establish that Ms. Currie was "always there," and could see and hear everything. At the same time, he acknowledged that he had always tried to prevent Ms. Currie from learning about his relationship with Ms. Lewinsky. "[I] did what people do when they do the wrong thing. I tried to do it where nobody else was looking at it."

The President was also asked about his statement that Ms. Currie was always in the Oval Office when Ms. Lewinsky visited. He explained that he may have intended the term "Oval Office" to include the entire Oval Office complex. [And "My house" means anywhere in the neighborhood.] The President further explained, "I was talking about 1997. I was never, ever trying to get Betty Currie to claim that on the occasions when Monica Lewinsky was there when she wasn't anywhere around, that she was." When asked whether he restricted his remarks to the year 1997, the President responded, "Well, I don't recall whether I did or not, but . . . I assumed [Ms. Currie] knew what I was talking about." [So now we are expected to believe Betty is a mind reader.]

When questioned about his statement to Ms. Currie, "you could see and hear everything," the President responded:

My memory of that was that, that she had the ability to hear what was going on if she came in the Oval Office from her office. And a lot of times, you know, when I was in the Oval Office, she just had the door open to her office. Then there was -- the door was never completely closed to the hall. So, I think there was -- I'm not entirely sure what I meant by that, but I could have meant that she generally would be able to hear conversations, even if she couldn't see them. And I think that's what I meant. [But what he said was "you could see and hear everything,". What an answer!]

Finally, when asked about his statement to Ms. Currie that "Monica came on to me and I never touched her," the President refused to answer. [Finally, he "took the Fifth!" Funny, I don't remember the news reporting that.]

[I really can't imagine anyone reading this and, with a straight face, saying he was not trying to get Betty to lie for him. Doing so, knowing she was bound to end up on the stand, in my humble opinion, constitutes Obstruction of Justice. Everyone who thinks the president should be allowed to obstruct justice and keep his job, raise your Left hand!]

Tell me, who is the greater threat to this country, one who consistentely lies about giving speeches, writing columns, etc., for in the Council of Conservative Citizens (formerly Ku Klux Klan) or somebody who lies about sex? Which one is the greater threat to this country?

Have Republicans no judgment at all? The Council of Conservative Citizens is a terrorist organization, yet you think it's OK for Trent Lott to be involved in it and then lie about it. Where are your values? Do you really enjoy committing political suicide?

Are all Republicans racists? If not then why can't one single Republican stand up and demand that Trent Lott resign? He is in one of the most powerful politicians in our land yet not one, not one single Republican has enough integrity or courage to object.

Are we to conclude that if you scratch a Republican you find a racist underneath? Is this another illustration of Republican hypocrisy -- give lip service to racism yet support Trent Lott?

The people see your hypocrisy GOP and you will not control Congress again, because you are a danger to us all. You spent $60 million dollars to have a white supremacists try and topple the presidency?

I predict that your descendants will be embarrassed to find out that you were one of the Republican who supported Trent Lott in this purely partisan war to topple the presidency.

OK, if you want to get into this "racist" name-calling thing so be it.

First point: Trent Lott broke no laws. End of story.[ EDITOR: I suggest you make him sign under oath that he is not now, nor has he ever been involved in the Council of Conservative Citizens, and watch him back off. He would never sign. He prefers to manipulate you with lies. The truth will never set him free because he cannot tell the truth]

Second point: Let's just say, for the sake of argument, that Trent Lott is a racist (Though you have no proof other than he gave a speech to a racist organization). The President is a misogynist. The definition of misogynist is "One who hates women". He uses women as mere objects for the gratification of his carnal urges. He lies to them (why not, he lies to everyone), he uses them and then he discards them. And if they dare complain he sends his "Army of Personal Destruction" after them and destroys them. Is this any less evil than seeing blacks as subhuman and hating them?

The difference here is that we have proof of Bill Clinton's hatred of women. We've seen what he does to them. We have no proof of Trent Lott's racism. Do you have a copy of the speech he gave? Have you read any of the articles he wrote for their publication? Did he make any racist statements? If so please post them here and I will retract my defense of him immediately! By the way, he has since renounced the group. Has Bill Clinton renounced his evil ways? Hardly.

"The Council of Conservative Citizens is a terrorist organization..."

Proof please? If you have any, call the FBI. I'm sure they would be most interested.

"Are all Republicans racists?"

I'm a Republican and I'm not a racist, so I guess the answer is "No". This kind of question is just silly and serves no purpose. Some might even call it "hate speech".

"I predict that your descendants will be embarrassed to find out that you were one of the Republican who supported Trent Lott in this purely partisan war to topple the presidency."

I predict that your descendants will be embarrassed to find out that you were one of the Liberals who supported Bill Clinton in this purely partisan war to destroy the very basis of our system of laws.

And finally, as this article explains, both parties have ties to the Council of Conservative Citizens. As usual, there is more than enough stupidity to go around.

When we no longer demand that our leaders obey the law we will be ruled! This is not about a president, this is about the very basis of our society! When we no longer hold our leaders to the minimum standard of obeying the law we are guaranteed the destruction of this great nation. Bill Clinton is insignificant in comparison to the Rule of Law! Where is the proof? I see the opposite. Bill Clinton has given more women opportunities to high political positions than any other president. Bill Clinton was not afraid to marry a strong woman and brought her into his life as his partner, not his submissive wife.

"He uses women as mere objects for the gratification of his carnal urges""

Unfortunately Zippy, you are talking about many men here. The San Jose Mercury News and the Chronicle published that Trent Lott has written columns for their newsletter and gave many speeches to them for years. I'm very busy in the next few days, but I will get that information for you.
"The Council of Conservative Citizens is a terrorist organization..."
The Council of Conservative Citizens is made up mostly of former members of the Ku Klux Klan according to the broadcast last night. If you don't consider supporters of the Ku Klux Klan mentality terrorists then we have a problem in perception.
"And finally, as this article explains, both parties have ties to the Council of Conservative Citizens."
I have not read your link yet, but I can assure you that I oppose ANY supporter of that organization and don't care what party he belongs to. Obviously I have already condemned that organization on this forum, so I have already stood up to be counted. How about you?
"I predict that your descendants will be embarrassed to find out that you were one of the Liberals who supported Bill Clinton in this purely partisan war to destroy the very basis of our system of laws."

"The Council of Conservative Citizens, an organization built by supporters of the segregationist White Citizens Councils, the John Birch Society and activists in the presidential campaigns of then-Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace, has developed strong political ties to the Republican Party in the South as well as to the fading conservative wing of the southern Democratic Party.

But it is two other southern politicians -- Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) and Rep. Robert L. Barr (R-Ga.) -- who have brought the group its recent notoriety. Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz has attacked Barr, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, for speaking before the organization, which Dershowitz characterized as racist. Lott also has faced criticism and, like Barr, has tried to distance himself from the group. Yet there is evidence that Lott's ties to the group are far stronger than he has acknowledged.

During its 10 years of existence, the council has maintained sustained relations with Lott. Photos of Lott at the group's gatherings in Mississippi and of Lott meeting in Washington with its officials have appeared periodically in the Citizens Informer, the organization's quarterly publication. The Informer regularly publishes a column Lott writes and distributes from his Senate office.

Wallace was never a white supremacist (at least from all that I know) – he was (in his early years) a separatist, which means he was for the separation of the races (white schools and black schools, white neighborhoods and black neighborhoods). Separatist and supremacist are VERY difference. Farrakhan is a black separatist – the Nation of Islam is a black separatist organization.

Important Note – Wallace moderated his views in the sixties and became a governor that did a lot good for black people is Alabama. While I am not a supporter of Wallace I am a supporter of the facts. Editor – beware of your broad brush.

35,000,000 babies ripped limb from limb, burned or pierced through the skull is not a Constitutionalists philosophy..... it is socialist.[ Fabius you are totally nuts]

Editors - what is nuts about that statement? < [EDITOR: LVD, you are trying to convince me that 35,000,000 babies aborted were "liberal or socialist" babies, and I know for sure that one of those babies was produced by Bob Barr!!!! I would guess that if you took a count of what political party those aborted babies belong to they would fall into the demographics of the existing numbers in both the Democratic and Republican parties. So get off your guilt-inflicting right-wing crap trying to pin this abortion suffering on Democrats, Liberals and Socialists. The Republicans are doing it too except that they are hypocrites who like to point fingers at others while they do it themselves.

Time and time again I propose methods of PREVENTION, and GUARANTEED CARE of unwanted children. You never support any of these measures, or propose any of your own. Why not. If you are so concerned about all this suffering why don't you put time and money into prevention??? Jeepers, conservatives seem to like the bliss of abortion ignorance. ]

I heard Rush make I really good point today: Clinton and the liberals (and the editor of this forum) say oral-genital contact is never considered sex. Therefore, Clinton, the liberals, and the Editors are saying that lesbians can NEVER have sex. (never have and never will). You liberal cats have a very wacky outlook on life...

[EDITOR: LVD I did not know you were so naive about how lesbians have sex. As I have said to you before LVD, if you think what Monica and Bill did was sex then I feel really sorry for your wife. I don't know too many women who would be happy with that! For sure I would not. I'd kick my partner's ass if he tried to pass that off as sex!

Sexual activity can be elevated to many levels, reaching all the way up the that mystical union of mind, body and spirit. Some couples can achieve such an intense degree of sexual union which continues for hours and transcends their ordinary state of being, transforming their vision and understanding of the universe. But you can't understand that , LVD, because you think it's a male being serviced by a female who gives him a blowjob, while the male gives nothing back. How sad for your wife. No wonder the Republicans are so hungry for the good stuff. They intuitely know it's out there but they can't get it because it requires more than a blowjob

Message: The Witness Issue . . .

By Charles Krauthammer

Friday, January 15, 1999; Page A29

Rarely in the annals of double-think has a party distinguished itself as has the D emocratic Party of Bill Clinton. First they insisted that the House complete its impeachment inquiry on President Clinton by the end of 1998. Then, when the Republicans did exactly that, the Democrats claimed the House's impeachment to be illegitimate because it was passed by the lame-duck 105th, whose term expired with 1998.

Then the Democrats waxed eloquent about how House Republicans had created a travesty of impeachment by calling no firsthand witnesses and relying on Ken Starr's written record. Now the Democrats wax eloquent about how Senate Republicans would create a travesty of impeachment by calling witnesses and not relying on Ken Starr's written record.

(Of course Republicans, too, pulled off a nice little flip on the issue: no witnesses in the House, a demand for witnesses in the Senate. But at least the Republican flip carried a modicum of logic. Because the House impeaching is analogous to a grand jury indicting, the House could reasonably justify relying on the grand jury testimony already taken. The Senate trial, however, is analogous to a criminal trial. And in criminal trials, grand jury testimony is not deemed sufficient. Witnesses are called.)

It is most delightful to watch the Democrats trying to make a straight-faced argument that the Senate trial of the president of the United States must prohibit witnesses. When it is pointed out that it is customary in the United States -- as it is in Mongolia and was in Sumeria -- to call witnesses in a trial, the Democrats protest that this is not a real trial.

Of course, at the same time, Democrats level constant complaints about Republican unfairness on procedure, denying the president the right to -- pick one -- (a) due process, (b) adequate examination of the evidence against him, (c) forewarning about the trial's procedures, (d) a speedy trial. But these rights -- allegedly violated -- are the rights of a defendant in a trial, which the Democrats simultaneously deny that this is.

The denial is fatuous. The Constitution has very little to say about impeachment procedure, but it is absolutely unequivocal in calling what happens in the Senate a trial.

The idea that there is some principle involved in not calling witnesses is simply ridiculous. All this wordplay, which aspires but does not quite rise to Clintonian proportions, is in the service of fear. Even though there are not now 67 votes to convict the president, the Democrats are afraid that witnesses might yet again change the dynamic of a story whose dynamic has already changed unpredictably a h
