WASHINGTON POST: Saturday, December 19, 1998; 10:23 p.m. EST
WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Clinton's job approval rating climbed over the 70 percent mark following his impeachment by the House on Saturday, according to an NBC News poll. In interviews with 510 adults, 72 percent approved of Clinton's handling of the presidency, while 25 percent disapproved and the rest were not sure. A similar poll on Tuesday found Clinton with a 68 percent approval rating and a 28 percent disapproval mark. Meanwhile, support for House passage of impeachment articles climbed to 43 percent from 40 percent Wednesday, while opposition slipped to 55 percent from 57 percent. The pool carried a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points. A CBS-New York Times poll taken after the House action found 66 percent of respondents opposing a suggestion that it would be better for the country if Clinton resigned, while 31 percent supported that notion. The numbers were unchanged from a week earlier. The survey of 499 adults carried a 4-percentage-point margin of error.

Congressman's campaign headquarters damaged by arson fire 8.10 p.m. ET (111 GMT) December 20, 1998

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (AP) An arson fire damaged U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg's campaign headquarters Sunday, and police are investigating whether it was revenge for his votes on impeachment.

"If it is determined that this was retaliation of some sort because of Knollenberg's position yesterday, there could be a domestic terrorism charge,'' said Police Chief William Dwyer.

No one was injured, and the office suffered minor fire and smoke damage, Dwyer said. The fire was started with plywood political signs.

Knollenberg, a Republican, voted for all four articles of impeachment Saturday. He said his office received hundreds of calls concerning the impeachment and the attack on Iraq last week.

"Given the gravity of these issues and the contentious nature of the debate surrounding them, some of the individuals calling my office were very passionate in expressing their views,'' Knollenberg said in a statement. "That said, there were no threats made against me or my staff that would have given me reason to be concerned.''

Dwyer said witnesses provided a possible vehicle description and suspect information.

The "moral majority" was a real now defunct entity (it has been defunct for something like 10 years). The Moral Majority had nothing to do with the Republican takeover of congress because it was not in existence. Look, I am having too much fun getting ready for the holidays with my 1 year old son and 3 year old daughter so I will make one quick message to answer the slander spewed at me [my feelings are sooo hurt : - )] . A few people are making ad homien attacks on me saying I am making half-truths or lies - could you please give an example. Empty attacks are meaningless.

As for my activity on this forum - I swear on Clinton's honor that I came to the forum today planning on not posting (I have too much work to do and I wasn't up for the bad karma) but when I stopped by the forum was full of outlandish crap-o-la and blatant misunderstandings of our government - I have a Don Quixote streak in me and this make me want to correct error when I see it. Look, if you Democrats what to live in a fantasy world of your own making - who I am I to spoil your fun (though I do find if amusing when I confound liberals with facts how they squeal like a stuck pig and start spewing insults - SFLiberals is the quintessential example [but we love you just the same - we know you really don't mean it : - )].

My last attempt to clear up the Democrat misunderstands of our Government and current situation:

We are not a Democracy - not even close. Democracy = mob rule. The Salem Witch trials were a Democracy. Examples of Democracy- if the mob(polls) says the president is above the law, then the president is about the law - if the mob(polls) says she is a witch, then she is a witch. This country was founded as a Constitutional Republic (FYI - that is were Republican comes from). Constitutional meaning we are a country of law and rules and not of men and personality (unlike the hero worship of the current Democrats). We elect representatives to represent us (not to follow polls or the mob) - this is why a candidate presents position papers so you understand the way they think and where they are coming from. This is why you should think very carefully when you vote and not just vote for fashion. The Representatives then make discussion FOR us - We have the right to remove officials by two means: elections and removal for breaking the laws (impeachment, etc). The Democratic aspect of our system is the way we vote but even our votes are not a pure Democracy (like the Electoral College - don't forget the own Senators where not elected when our country was founded). The Representative SHOULD NOT follow polls because it violates our system of government and institutes mob rule.

Ther was NOTHING unconstitutional about the Clinton impeachment - nothing! If you study the last Presidential impeachment you will find that it was equally "partisan" - but by definition this impeachment was bipartisan and the only argument the left can make was it should have been more bipartisan. The impeachment itself was very partisan and both sides were guilty. The Democrats look every bit as bad as the Republicans - both sides had their minds made up before any of the debates. The Impeachment was as partisan as the Defense of Clinton. Bottom Line - the Republicans followed the rules the founders set down - just because you don't like the outcome doesn't mean you can call it unconstitutional.

As for these BOGUS headlines on the forum about the WORLD TURN AGAINS GOP or the GOP IS MELTING DOWN - PLEASE, show me a shred of evidence. This must piss the left-wing extremist off but most cable talk shows are moving on the other topic - the outrage the left hoped for in nowhere to be found. The GOP has shown great degrees of composure while withstanding a very vicious attack from the Democrats. The GOP has shown GREAT honor - one speaker realized it was time for a new leader and then another stepped down for the good of the country after being blackmailed by the Democrats. The Republicans have gone through 3 speakers of the House in a little over a month without any in-fighting (something I doubt the Democrats could do). The Republican are stronger than ever - they has shown character by holding fast to the rule of law even when if was not popular with the mob. If American doesn't want the Republicans they can throw them out in 2000 - Before the election of 1998 - SFLiberals told us that America didn't want the Republican any more but the elections prove (beyond a shadow of a doubt) that SFLiberals were absolutely wrong - Republican were to returned to control EVERYTHING. We will see what happens in 2000 but let me warn the over zealous Democrats - don't count you chicken before they hatch - or, shall I say, get used to, again, the sound of "President Bush". As for SFLiberals - the record is 1 lose and 0 wins.

McCurry doubts Clinton's fitness for office

Mike McCurry: "Flabbergasted that he could be so reckless"

The former White House press spokesman, Mike McCurry, says he has "enormous doubts" about President Bill Clinton's fitness for office. Mr McCurry told the BBC's Newsnight programme President Clinton's behaviour was "surely reckless" and "contrary to the way you would expect a rational human being to behave".

Asked whether he thought Mr Clinton was fit to be president, Mr McCurry, who had maintained his silence on presidential issues since his resignation in October, said: "I have enormous doubts because of the recklessness of his behaviour.

"The nature of this particular affair and then the way he did conceal it really does raise some very profound troubling matters.

"I feel the way most Americans and probably his own wife do: Deeply disappointed, and hurt and a bit flabbergasted that he could be so reckless," said Mr McCurry.

Reliance on denial

Asked about the president's sex life, he said people close to Mr Clinton had spent a year relying on what appeared to be a direct denial of scandal.

"I did not believe that there was a tortured definition of sex lurking behind that denial," said Mr McCurry.

"I couldn't imagine that he would put himself in that kind of jeopardy when there was a whole army of inquisitors out there," he added.

The former spokesman said that direct conversation on the Monica Lewinsky affair had been avoided to prevent presidential aides being subpoenaed.

But Mr McCurry said he had been assured by the president that "everything would turn out alright".

He said that he had preferred to remain "unknowing" rather than give the press information that night be unreliable.

The House has NO authority to censor a president - simply put: The House indicts and the Senate convicts and punishes (that is the way the constitution has defined the process). In yet another attempt at changing and twisting the subject, LVD also issued a tacit attack upon my moniker, wherein he questioned (insinuated) whether I was posting as "Monikerless Jerk." "Hmm, am I the only one that thinks Queen Bea may be using another moniker yet again? What is the Queen Bea, your 10th moniker so far?". (Gee, I suppose this could be considered a two-fer, and also count as a personal attack.)

I shouldn’t neglect to mention that, by way of another one of LVD’s "intellectual debating tactics," he attempted to prejudice a newcomer (Jason) against me by bad-mouthing me and alerting Jason "not to listen" to me because I had been exiled before. "Jason, don't listen to Queen Bea - she have been exiled many time." I have NEVER attempted to negatively prejudice a newcomer towards anyone on this forum, and consider it really about as low on the scale of "debating tactics" as one can sink – and certainly far from "intellectual." In fact, if being exiled is the only requirement for not listening to a forum member, might I suggest everyone take LVD's advice and ignore HIM. (NOTE: LVD’s admission that he has also been exiled does not negate the fact that he was attempting to prejudice someone against me to score points, nor does his insidious "candor" or "fairness" discount his obvious cheap shot.)

Simply by observing LVD’s own posting style and rhetoric, it is apparent that LVD must perceive personal attacks, changing and twisting the subject, and questioning motives as acceptable debating tactics, and ones not solely confined to liberals – his incessant claim. If not, why does he use them? Or is this simply his infamous "pot calling the kettle black" routine? (Allow me not to neglect adding prejudicing newcomers to the list of acceptable debating tactics, as well.)

Perhaps if LVD refrained from engaging in the same debating tactics he criticizes others for when finding himself on the receiving end, he would appear less hypocritical, less irrational, less illogical, and even find himself with a leg to stand on (figuratively speaking). (I guess it’s okay to have it both ways…if you’re Last Visible Dog.)

LVD's claim that I "made fun of" his car during the thread in question is a perfect example of more bogus nonsense. In response to LVD's use of irrelevant information to make a slur, I stated: "Oh well, I guess it's time to start taking irrelevant jabs at Mazda Miatas (LVD's car of choice) and twist it into some sort of attack on him personally." There was no attack there. Later, I explained I could utilize his car as an EXAMPLE to attack him personally. There was no attack there, either. (BTW - I actually stated the truth - the MM is a "puny midget" car - and until someone proves the converse, my statement stands.) I suppose in the future, it will be classified as a "liberal debating tactic" to present someone with the truth.

I will now stand back and allow for the onslaught of attacks on my comments to ensue, as I'm certain the tedium professed for this thread is not sufficiently formidable to prevent yet another "clearing of this situation" -- from those directly involved (and the vociferous cheering squad which has settled in snugly on the sidelines).
