Message: GOP-Run Congress Drops Further in Polls
Public unhappy with impeachment probe
New York Times
With midterm elections less than three weeks away, support for the Republican-controlled Congress has eroded significantly in the aftermath of the House vote to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Clinton, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.
The 105th Congress is now widely perceived as having invested too much political capital in impeachment and having accomplished little on a broad array of issues of importance to voters, from protecting Social Security to improving managed health care.
Approval of Congress has dropped from a high of 56 percent in September to 43 percent as the House has been consumed by the charges leveled against the president independent counsel Kenneth Starr.
Nearly half of all voters said that the Republican-controlled Congress had accomplished less than a typical Congress. Most Americans could not name one accomplishment of the Congress this year.
Clinton's support, by contrast, remains as strong as it has ever been during his presidency, with 63 percent approving of how he is doing his job. On foreigh policy, 60 percent approving of how he is doing his job and 70 percent approve of his stewardship of the economy.

email: American conservatism - what has gone wrong?
Message: I stopped reading the Starr report when it simply became obvious that the narrative, compelling and lucid as it was, seemed to be building a case not so much for the President's public, legal impropriety but for a private, moral iniquity. And I stopped reading not because I sympathize with President Clinton's repeated public lies, or his abuse of power and of his office. ( I still think he should resign.) Nor because I am instinctively a liberal. I stopped reading at some point because it became depressingly clear that the Starr report and its aftermath represents not simply a case study in what has gone wrong with an American Presidency, but also a case study in what has gone wrong with American conservatism.
While Bill Clinton, by his failure to settle, and then to apologize, and then to tell the truth, was responsible in the first place for nine months of trauma, he was not responsible for the prurient, lip-pursing moralism of the report, nor for the subsequent, egregious outspilling of grand-jury testimony. Proof of perjury or obstruction of justice required non of this, as most Americans immediately understood. This moral obsessiveness was the creation of Kenneth Starr and something far larger than Kenneth Starr. It was the creation of a conservatism become puritanism, a conservatism that has long lost sight of the principles of privacy and restraint, modesty and constitutionalism, which used to be its hallmarks.
This scolding, moralizing conservatism is one with a lineage; it is the construction of a cadre of influential intellectuals who bear as much responsibility as anybody for the constitutional and cultural damage this moment may have already wrought. And they will bear an even greater responsibility if the ultimate victim of this spectable is the reputation and future of conservatism itself.

Inquiry backlash heartens Democrats
” Republican leaders face the risk of another backlash from within their own ranks. THE AD BUILDS on the Democrats’ repeated charge that the impeachment inquiry is being masterminded by House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who, they say, will stop at nothing to destroy Clinton’s presidency.
Addressing the camera directly, Inslee says in the ad: “Rick White and' Newt Gingrich shouldn’t be dragging us through this. Enough is enough.” Some of the melancholy that had settled over Democrats before last week’s House vote to launch a formal impeachment inquiry has been dispelled by: Anecdotal evidence of public impatience with the impeachment inquiry, as measured by constituents’ phone calls and letters to members of Congress; and a new Washington Post poll showing that 62 percent of the 802 adults surveyed disapprove of the way the Republicans in Congress are handling the issue of impeachment. Democratic pollster Geoff Garin said, “Thanks to the Republicans, it’s a lot easier being a Democratic candidate now than it was a month ago.

email: PORNO-PURITANISM - The degenerated conservative political and literary culture.
Message: The issues that are driving the Republican base this fall have little to do with economics or politics or national security. They are issues of morals: infidelity and honesty, abortion, family cohesion and homosexual legitimacy. Much of this, as has been widely reported, is because of the evangelical Protestants who now make up the Republican activist base. The new moralism has been enforced with a rigidity that puts old-style leftists to shame. It is an orthodoxy, to put it bluntly, of cultural and moral revolution: a wholesale assault on the beliefs and practices of an entire post-1960's settlement.
The centrality of this moralism to the Lewinsky saga was perhaps best put by David Frum, one of the brightest of the young conservative thinkers now writing. "What's at stake in the Lewinsky scandal," Frum wrote candidly in the Feb. 16, 1998, issue of The Weekly Standard, a conservative magazine, "is not the right to privacy, but the central dogma of the baby boomers: the belief that sex, so long as it's consensual, ought never to be subject to moral scrutiny at all."
It would be hard to put better what was so surprising, and so dismaying, about the Starr report and the Republican Congress's subsequent behavior. In their universe privacy is immaterial, hence the gratuitous release of private telephone conversations, private correspondence and even details of the most private of human feelings. For these conservatives there is only a right, as Starr revealingly wrote, to a "private family life". A private, nonfamily life is fair game for prosecution and exposure.
No conservative thinker has done more to advance this new moralism than William Kristol, who edits, The Weekly Standard, founded in 1995 by Rupert Murdoch.
But perhaps no edition of The Standard captured the current state of American conservatism better than the one that came out immediately after the Starr report. Six pages of explicit sex. One of the many graphic scenes in the article occurs in a ladies restroom: "Unprompted, Dr Susan Block removes a rubber phallus from her purse and hikes up her assistant LaVonne's dress, baring her derriere. Block paddles it and kisses it while LaVonne coos." The wierd porno-puritanism of the Starr report does not exist, it seems, in a vacuum. It comes out of a degenerated conservative political and literary culture.

Starr’s methods, means
under increasing scrutiny
By Brock N. Meeks -MSNBC
WASHINGTON — As both sides prepare for battle over the fate of President Bill Clinton, the investigation that led to this historic showdown comes under increasing scrutiny. Kenneth Starr maintains he has done what he was hired to do: investigate the president impartially and fairly. But reports now point to a special prosecutor working closely with the president’s deepest enemies from the start.

"A cultist is one who has a strong belief in the Bible and the Second Coming of Christ; who frequently attends Bible studies; who has a high level of financial giving to a Christian cause; who home schools for their children; who has accumulated survival foods and has a strong belief in the Second Amendment; and who distrusts big government. Any of these may qualify a person as a cultist but certainly more than one of these would cause us to look at this person as a threat, and his family as being in a risk situation that qualified for government interference."

Now that President Clinton has spoken, I think we are all wise to take his advice and turn off anymore of the trash that has been and no doubtely will spew out more in the coming days. Right Wing Republicans will try to argue, just refuse to listen. Turn off the TV when they start. Let the pundits du jour know that we aren't interested in what they have to say. The only way for this to close is for us to use that tiny little button on the TV and radio that allows us the final word - the off button, or at least change the channel, watch something totally void of politics. You should also call and/or write your newspapers and call a halt to the daily trash editorials, as well as the local and National News agencies. Let's now work within the system, through this Protest Petition to have Starr ousted and reclaim our Nation's future! (Link to letters of support at the bottom, along with a little bit about me). Remember, some extremist members of Congress have already started to use this for partisan commercials regarding their upcoming elections, let's not let it flourish.
Also, please remember that the Republicans are only a few seats away from having a filibuster-proof Congress, which means should they gain as few as 5 more seats, they will have not only the Majority, they will have over 2/3 majority. That means nothing but trouble for America. Instead, we need to turn this disgraceful abuse of power around. Even those who are not Democrats, those who aren't particularly happy with either party, must vote Democratic this November 3rd. If you think that the witchhunt has been bad for America so far, the nightmare of what it'll be like should they have 2/3 majority in Congress is something we must prevent!! If possible, we must return majority to the Democrats, and then make sure we hold them responsible for keeping their contract with America!!
Great article: http://members.aol.com/shyone8950/disgrace.html

Are you as tired as I am of the out of control Kenneth Starr? Are you happy with President Clinton and the job that he's doing? If so, join me and others to protest and demand that Kenneth Starr resign at once, and the Independent Counsel Office (Herein referred to as ICO) be disbanded immediately. To sign, simply email me with explicit permission to add your name and email address to the Protest Petition at ShyOne8950@aol.com. (If you're going to send me hate mail, at least have something intelligent to say!) I do suggest creating a secondary email address, there are free email addresses at Yahoo! and other places, if your ISP doesn't offer more than one screenname.
We, the undersigned, are fed up and hereby protest the McCarthyistic vendetta being pursued by Kenneth Starr. We know that he was on a mission to unseat President Clinton from the very beginning, since - as was reported on MSNBC (link to the article is to follow) - shows that Kenneth Starr was "on the short list to be nominated to Supreme Court Justice." The article goes on to explain how Judge Starr went out of his way to silently campaign for support to be nominated, being the only person to do so. He wanted this position very badly. He was close too, on a short list of 5 potential nominees. One problem arose, Bush was defeated in the '92 election, and thereby Starr's chance went out the window. Judge Starr has been on a rampage ever since.
Click here for MSNBC report on archive: http://www.msnbc.com/modules/starr/Appt.htm
Also in question - as reported by US News & World Report (link to article to follow) - is the moneyline that follows the beginning of the investigation to publisher Richard Scaife, a not so silent Right Wing Extremist who throws his money behind all Christian Coalition efforts. Especially those that try to hurt President Clinton.
To understand the motives, you have to understand the mentality of the last election when Bob Dole ran against President Clinton. The Republicans and the Christian Coalition joined forces to defeat the President. The Christian Coalition promised a wide voter base to "assure" a Republican victory, and the Republicans promised to back Christian Coalition (hereafter referred to as CC) agendas. Both thought it was a foregone conclusion, and luckily both were wrong. The only problem, once the Republicans slept with the CC, they handed over the party reigns. Even though they lost, the CC had infiltrated enough seats to take control. The Republican party as we knew it had died.
Also reported in the US News & World Report report, the detective that "spilled the beans" in the original article that started the whole Paula Jones mess admitted he lied! He never even gave a last name, yet suddenly the Christian Coalition found her. The article was published in a magazine owned by Richard Scaife. Thus, the moneyline has reached back into the Christian Coalition. Read the entire story and you'll get the complete facts.
Click here for US News & World Report Article http://www.usnews.com/usnews/issue/980209/9right.htm
Also, Mr. James Carville's website has been taken down. It had some wonderful information regarding Starr's excesses, including a book deal Starr was proposing. However, an even better reference is his new book And The Horse He Rode On. Buy the book, and use the form letter in the back to send in your receipt to Starr, to save him the taxpayer expense of sending you a subpeona, you know - when it's your time around. Send it Certified, so that they have to sign for it and you get a receipt back.
We, the taxpayers are not fooled.
We, the taxpayers, are not in favor of this vendetta.
We, the taxpayers, want this country to stay a Democracy, we will not allow the USA to become a Theocracy or a Starr-like Dictatorship.
We, the taxpayers, do not believe that a Democratic Society as we live in should give one man so much power that he can do anything he wants. He is in effect creating new laws and this must be stopped.
We, the taxpayers, demand that President Clinton be allowed to continue doing the job that we proudly elected him to do.
We, the taxpayers believe that any man is entitled to a private life beyond his office. Nothing he has done in this case has affected this country adversely.
We, the taxpayers, believe that no man shall be isolated from counsel, not even the President of the United States!
We, the taxpayers, say those in Washington who have not sinned, cast the first stone. Those in glass houses......
We, the taxpayers, demand that Congress call for an immediate cease and desist to Kenneth Starr, and that Starr be impeached as Independent Counsel.
We, the taxpayers, demand that Congress dismantle immediately the office of IOC and close all offices connected with it.
We, the taxpayers, WILL REMEMBER who stirred the flames and backed Judge Kenneth Starr this coming November and those people will be replaced.
We, the taxpayers, WILL REMEMBER those that blocked badly needed legislation purely for partisan reasons, trying to stop President Clinton from accomplishing his duties and agenda.

Message: This election year is bringing several female candidates full circle to face the irony of their positions.
Barbara Boxer, Carol Moseley-Braun and Patty Murray are seeking second terms in the U.S. Senate.
All three are liberal Democrats, who rode the wave of outrage during the Clarence Thomas sexual harassment debacle in the fall of 1991.
All three of these women managed upset victories over their opponents.
All three benefited from the support of voters angered by hearings the male-dominated Senate Judiciary Committee conducted in 1991 into allegations that Thomas repeatedly used suggestive language toward Anita Hill when she worked for him.
All three now face uncertain futures because of the hypocrisy of their politics and abandoning the issue they championed when first elected.
All three face formidable opponents.
Boxer, who is related to President Clinton by marriage, perhaps is the most hypocritical and the most vulnerable.
She pounded the pavement insisting that Anita Hill be heard before Clarence Thomas’ confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court; and she led the way in denouncing Robert Packwood, the Republican senator from Oregon who was ultimately forced to resign over allegations of sexual misconduct.
Now, she and many others — who would have been satisfied with Thomas’ and Packwood’s heads on platters — are keeping their feminist mouths shut. They’ve displayed no outrage over the conduct of their lying, philandering president, who was messing around with one of his employees in the Oval Office.
If it’s bad for a Republican to paw and make lewd comments to his employees, then certainly it’s equally as bad for a Democrat to do it, even if he is the president of the United States.
And if it turns out that Barbara Boxer, Carol Moseley-Braun and Patty Murray aren’t re-elected this year, they’ll have no one but themselves to blame for abandoning a principle women’s issue.

Message: The Monica Lewinsky scandal has hit high culture. Distinguished writers regard it not as a tale of tawdry sex and perjury, but of American freedom menaced by ayatollahs, Torquenadas, McCarthyites and Salem witch hunters.
The menace is Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr, who is pictured as the leading agent in a right-wing Puritan conspiracy to remove that most precious of all American liberties.
It's not freedom of belief or expression, according to the authors ventilating in the New Yorker, the New York Review of Books and the New York Times, but the right to engage in sex anywhere, anytime, including in the Oval Office during working hours.
If the intellectual elites have anything to say about it, the Clinton scandal will become a more polarized cause celebre, a lever for deeper cultural division -- and, eventually, a piece of historical mythology. Someday, there'll be an opera.
The archetypes being drawn by authors such as Toni Marrison, Arthur Miller, E.L. Doctorow and Ethan Canin are of Clinton as a flawed but humanistic leader entrapped, victimized and, possibly, martyred by forces of antediluvian re religiosity
Polls suggest that a majority of ordinary Americans comes out in the same place as the intellectuals -- that Starr is biased and Clinton ought not to be impeached -- but at least most ordinary Americans think Clinton is untrustworthy and deserves censure.

Well I can see you earned the first part of your moniker – my next thought is I guess the moniker “douche bag” was already taken. Judging by your message you must be VERY old, so I will talk slowly:
I did not think I was composing HTML here, old person, I was typing text into a text box only to have it strip out the returns. I guess you cats on the left don’t understand much about technology in general (you got tunnel vision)– spending most of your time hugging trees, worshiping inanimate objects (like toasters), and being grumpy and no fun to people around you. Lighten up member of the Vast Lunatic Left, propping up your man weasel boy is tough job and it would make anybody grumpy – but life is not all bad. Weasel Boy will be gone in at least 2 years (and a few months) – then maybe we can start healing the Clinton imposed wounds and we can start to undo all the damage Clinton has done to our society and political system. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Message: Now, LVD :-) this first thing I notice about you is that you want to be a nice person, and you would like "us all to get along." You do not want us to think you are just another hate-filled right-winger on this board...., BUT, you immediately go on the ATTACK! You called Witch Hazel a "douche bag" How disgusting can you get with such an ugly description? Are you demonstrating to us how "to get along?" Thank you, but no thank you for that one, LVD.
Then you refer to her as "VERY old" in derogatory terms. I don't know how old she is, and that does not matter. What matters is that you are prejudiced against age as most people are, unfortunately, and, furthermore you desire to be cruel and insult her because of her age. Is this another demonstration of how we "can all get along?" Are you in the clutches of denial LVD? Do you not see yourself in the same trap?
It's interesting how many conservatives come to this board and do EXACTLY the same thing you are doing, and yet they do not see themselves. Is it because conservatives are more self-righteous than liberals and are imbued with their own sense of perfection and righteousness? Maybe you can explain this phenomenon to me>
Think about this LVD -- only the LUCKY ONES grow old; all the rest of us die young. You are obviously young because you insult the old. Do you really want to die young or would you rather grow old and be insulted by a prejudiced young punk like yourself when you grow old? The degree to which you are prejudiced against old age is the degree to which prejudice will reversed on you if you are lucky enough to also grow old. The prejudice will come from your own memory wherin you have implanted the seeds of prejudice as you have today with Witch Hazel.
Another thing, LVD, where did you get the idea that all the top technology professionals are conservatives and all the techno-incompetent are liberals? Doesn't that make you look extremely stupid?

Name: Kenn Starr - Take that Torquemada!
email: Eric Alterman - MSNBC
Message: Revelations of Ken Starr’s stealth taint his case and fuel the growing backlash NEW YORK, Oct. 15 — More than two-thirds of Americans approve of the job President Clinton is doing. Nearly seven in ten also believe an impeachment investigation to be unnecessary. And Kenneth Starr, the Republican Torquemada given unlimited powers and moneys to pry into the personal life of the president grows more discredited by the minute. How long can this go on?
Republicans seeking to overturn the 1996 election should have been careful enough to chose a prosecutor who is untainted by earlier associations with the anti-Clinton cabal.
THE NEWEST EVIDENCE of Starr’s unfitness for the job to which he was appointed involves the degree of his previously undisclosed consultations with Paula Jones’ lawyers in 1994. Readers may be aware that when a panel of three conservative judges appointed Starr, they willingly overlooked his apparent readiness to file an amicus brief on Jones’ behalf owing to his enthusiasm for her case.
National Public Radio disclosed this week that Starr’s role went even further. Former Jones lawyer Gilbert K. Davis admitted that he consulted with Starr between four to six times about the case before the latter was appointed independent counsel in 1994. Starr did not inform Attorney General Janet Reno of these stealth consultations when he asked her to approve the expansion of his Whitewater investigation (Remember Whitewater?) into the Jones/Lewinsky territory.
CLEARLY COMPROMISED According to any number of Constitutional scholars familiar with the intent of the Independent Counsel law, these meetings clearly compromised Starr’s impartiality before the fact. Had Reno been made aware of them, it is likely that she might have considered appointing a special prosecutor whose claim to impartiality was not so tainted.
Starr and Davis insist that the consultations involved only Constitutional issues regarding the president’s claim of immunity. Perhaps so, but how are we to verify this? Only recently, we have learned of the deep involvement with the Jones legal team of Starr’s law partner at Kirkland, Ellis, Richard W. Porter.
Lucianne Goldberg has said she called Porter, in Chicago, for help in getting a high-level contact at Starr’s office for Linda Tripp to call. Porter then called Jerome M. Marcus of Philadelphia, a member (with Ann Coulter) of Jones’ informal ‘kitchen cabinet’ of pro-bono lawyers. At one point, Marcus was on the line with Porter,” Goldberg told a reporter. In addition to Porter, Marcus had another law school friend, Paul S. Rosenzweig, who was on Starr’s staff in Washington.
So not only was Starr consulting with the Jones lawyers, and considering amicus briefs, but so, even more deeply, were members of his firm. Yet the independent counsel law prohibits law partners of independent counsels from representing anyone “involved in any investigation or prosecution under this chapter.
TAINTED PROSECUTOR
Certainly Starr apologists will argue that neither his nor
Porter’s efforts on behalf of Jones rises to the level of “
representation.” Technically, this is true, since no money passed
through anyone’s hands. (Starr did not need the money. He earns more
than $1 million a year, while he simultaneously conducts this investigation
by representing tobacco companies, among others.) But think about it:
Congress is about to impeach a president for lying about adultery.
His privacy rights have been shredded, to say nothing of poor Ms. Lewinsky, whose innermost thoughts and feelings have been ripped out of her heart and splashed across the Internet under the threat of jail. The country is against it and believes the entire matter to be politically motivated. One would think that the Republicans seeking to overturn the 1996 election would be careful enough to chose a prosecutor who is untainted by earlier associations with the anti-Clinton cabal.
SLIMY BEHAVIOR Instead we have Ken Starr, who has consulted with the Jones team and whose law partners have as well. He has accepted — and then rejected — an offer of a cushy job from anti-Clinton conspirator numero uno, Richard Mellon Scaife, and accepted lecture fees from Jerry Falwell, who himself has sold videotapes that accuse the president of being a murderer. And contrary to the law’s explicit guidelines, his office has deliberately leaked information designed to further his investigation and intimidate his critics.
Impeachment, we are told over and over, is the most sacred duty Congress can undertake save declaring war. And yet we are about to embark on that process — unsupported by the American people — solely on the basis of evidence gathered by a prosecutor whose political partisanship is undeniable and whose political judgement is even worse.
None of this is meant to exonerate President Clinton for the slimy way he has conducted himself in office, nor for the shame and dishonor he has brought on his own head through his personal conduct and lies. But to raise the personal to the level of the impeachable is not only anti-Constitutional, it is near totalitarian.
Clinton may be a scoundrel, but Ken Starr is a genuine danger to the sanctity of our political system. Let’s hope voters tell the Republican Congress just what they think of his investigation come November. It may be our only hope.

“You called Witch Hazel a "douche bag"
As supporters (notice I did not add “athletic”) of Clinton, you should understand parsing language better than that. I did not at any time call Witch Hazel a “douche bag” – I simply mused about the availability of the moniker (it was your mind that filled in the messing details). I would never call any names (directly). The most important point is – I was trying to funny using razor wit. It was Witch Hazel that started the personal attached toward this humble dog.
“Then you refer to her as "VERY old" in derogatory terms.”
Check the context. Witch Hazel made a comment about me not being up creating HTML with the “grown-ups” (strangely enough, Witch Hazel’s comment about HTML has been censored/deleted). Well, I am 39 and grown-up are people that are much older (20-30 years), so Witch Hazel most be pushing 70. BTW – the statement was sarcasm in response to an attach on me. NOTE: In real-life, I never want to become a “grown-up” and I am happy to be a kid all my life (at least in my outlook on life and new things).
“a prejudiced young punk like yourself “
Thank you – I just turned 39 this month and the though of 40 is a wee bit frightening so I really appreseate being called a “young punk”. Thank you – you made my day.
“Another thing, LVD, where did you get the idea that all the top technology professionals are conservatives and all the techno-incompetent are liberals? Doesn't that make you look extremely stupid?”
Oh come on – everybody knows that conservative are better looking, have more money, are more educated, have better sex, know the punch-line to most inside jokes, are better at technology, run faster, jump higher, and are the ones the hold this entire country – yea, the world – together.
(that was a joke)
(you liberals do have a sense of humor – don’t you?)
Epilogue (just like the old FBI tv show):
I made a comment about losing carriage-returns and duplicating my message (yes, I did it) and Witch Hazel made some snide personal attacks on this humble dog so I responded in kind. I harbor no ill will toward anybody…….come everybody, group hug.
I am feeling a lot of love in here……

drew a crowd of just over 100 people.
And that's if you count the dog walkers, joggers, baby strollers and journalists stopping by.
The organizers were hoping for 1000 people to attend, but only about 100 showed up. Could it be that the highly touted 'backlash' is 10 times smaller than advertised?
