Since this forum is VERY slow this morning, I posted the above picture to speak momentarily about elephant abuse. I love animals, especially elephants, and get outraged when I hear of abuse. I hope editor forgives me, but I thought this was more important than snoballs. Also, I would like to know where HIllary stands on animal rights. I don't have a clue and this is very important.

Is it just me or does Bugs impress anyone else as that character that Mickey Rooney played on tv...was the movie "My Name is Bill"?

I cried at the part of that movie when Dennis Quaid and girlfriend were going to leave "Bill," and then at the end when they dedicated a food place on campus to him, I think. It was a sad movie. I believe at the end though he made it out of the nursing home.

Message: Ok. Vanity Fair is is changing it's cover from Kim Basinger to Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. It's an effort by Graydon Carter to damage the new magazine Talk, which is to feature Hillary Clinton, and it's editor Tina Brown. The news of Hillary's picture on it's first editon's cover was responsible for the Talk launch party getting the boot fro, the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

Strom Thurmond who is now 95 started a States Rights Party called the DixieCrats in 1948 and ran for the Presidency.

DixieCrats were a subgroup of the Democrat party. There was no such thing as a separate "States Rights Party". Storm ran on the State's Right DEMOCRAT Ticket (he won 39 electoral votes). BTW - I think Storm is now 96.

This simply is not true(per se). The State's Right Party (a subgroup of the Democrat Party) platform was to limit the power of the federal government - basically to return the balance of power to the model used before the civil war (not all that bad of an idea). One thing Storm had on his side was the Constitution - which greatly limits the power of the federal government - Check out the 10th Amendment of our great Constitution. Storm and the other people in the State's Rights Party were tired of the federal government telling them what to do. The State's Rights Party was NOT racist or white supremacists (per se). Storm was into separate but equal variation of "gentlemen racism" while he was a Democrat - but he completely changed his positions on the subject and switched from Democrat to Republican. All your example seems to show is the Democrat party has been a hotbed of racism.

BTW - I am not using the term "per se" to be cute. It means "by of or in itself" - what I am saying is these were not the foundational reason for Storm's actions but that does not mean he did not hold those views (raciest).

You are not even close - this is complete guano/mythology. The School and Bus issue (and to some extent the restaurant issue) happened under a southwestern Republican. The Civil Rights movement stated in earnest under a Republican - Dwight David Eisenhower. Desegregation of the government and the armed forces happen under Eisenhower. Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka that led to the end of "separate but equal" education happened under Eisenhower. President Eisenhower (Republican) dispatched federal troops to restore order and to allow black students to attend Central High School in Little Rock Arkansas (BTW - Orval E. Faubus, governor of Arkansas, had ordered the national guard to stop the desegregation, guess what bugs - Orval was a Democrat). The Desegregation of the Montgomery Alabama bus system happen under Eisenhower. The Civil Right Act of 1957 that established the Civil Rights Commission to protect voting rights and equal protection of the laws happened under Eisenhower (Republican). While the Kennedy years did mark great strides in civil right - much of the hard work had already begun or was completed before Kennedy was elected (don't pull a Clinton with Kennedy by trying to give him create for the actions of other people). BTW - the most important civil right legislature to come out of government - the 1964 Civil Rights Act was sponsored by and happened under Johnson (JFK was pushing up the daisies at the time). I mean absolutely no disrespect to JFK - he did some good work - but so did a lot of other people and it could be argued that Eisenhower did more then Kennedy for the cause of Civil Rights.

Message: I'd simplify the Tax Code. Get rid of the Marriage Penalty on Marriage filing separatetely. Encourage Local and State Goveernments to give considerable tax breaks to small and new businesses. Tax the one percent of the Population who own 40% of our nations wealth. Give more scholorships to deserving children Reform Campaign Finance (sic) Funds. so the encumbant gets automatically re-elected to office. Raise the minimum wage. Which puts more money in the hands of people who will spend it. Control prescription prices.

Get lawyers out of the legislative and Executive Branches of Government. Let the lawyers only be in the Judicial Branch. Four distinct groups Monarchy, the Rich, Religous groups, and Lawyers concentrated in all three branches of Government destroy Democracy.

Actually that is not true - while Truman did indeed put forth some civil rights initiatives, the desegregation of the armed forces was carried out under Eisenhower. When you go out to buy a history book or encyclopedia you may want to pick up a dictionary so you can check the spelling of desegregation - you left out two syllables.

The Rosa Parks incident took place in 1955 - FIVE years before Kennedy was President. Martin Luther King Jr started his crusade in 1955 (the boycott of the Montgomery Alabama bus system) - that too was FIVE years before Kennedy was elected. I challenge you to site ONE thing Kennedy personally did for civil rights (he was for Civil Rights but he himself did nothing of consequence). The Civil Rights act of 1957 happened under Eisenhower and the Civil Right Act of 1964 happened AFTER he took the dirt nap. I am not bashing JFK - I am just point out that your Kennedy Mythology is erroneous. BTW - I think RFK did more for civil rights then JFK. Bottom line - JFK personally had little to nothing to do with the Civil Rights movement (he may have supported it but he did little to nothing himself).

That simply is NOT TRUE. The DixiCrats were Democrats AFTER 1948. The governor of Arkansas that defied desegregation and forced Eisenhower to use the military was a DEMOCRAT. In 1964 all of the southern Democrats including Al Gore Sr. voted against The Civil Rights Act. BTW - Strom abandoned the Democrat party when he abandoned his racism in 1957.

One side of my family are southern Democrats from Mississippi - I know what I am taking about. The southern Democrat party was the home of racism and the KKK in the south during the 1960's.

It was the Democratic Congress Not the Republican Congress who passed Civil Rights legislation after JFK got elected in 1960 to become President.

Wrong again Bunny Boy - the Civil Rights Act of 1957 happened FIVE years before Kennedy was president and it happen with a Republican Congress (that is correct - the FIRST major civil rights legislature was passed by a Republican controlled congress). BTW - the Democrats had worse voting percentages for the Civil Rights Act then the Republicans:

Congressional Quarterly reported that, in the House of Representatives,
61% of Democrats (152 for, 96 against) voted for the Civil Rights Act
as opposed to 80% of Republicans (138 for, 38 against).
In the Senate, 69% of Democrats (46 for, 21 against) voted for the Act
while 82% of Republicans did (27 for, 6 against).
All southern Democrats voted against the Act.

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a $792 billion tax cut
It's about freggin' time!

A family with taxable income of $55,700 would get a tax break of about $1,000. A single person earning $25,000 would get $380 back.

Actually I'm a moderate Democrat I hate taxes of any kind espcecially State income taxes and county taxes, and city that stifle small business people. I am against these big bereaucrats wasting the tax payers money on all sorts of schemes to enrich themselves when they leave office by giving great deals to large businesesses they are supposed to regulate.

I am still a believer in helping the sick and helpless, but making sure people get off welfare by educating them in jobs and careers to sustain their families. I am for reducing the debt which is humongeous 5 trillion Dollars, but I also love the 15% capital gains tax and giving back hard tax dollars to those deserving middle class people who paid them. Im for term limits 2 terms in the US Congress and then out. I hate Career Politicians, they can become like career criminals enrich themselves. Im for regulating pharmacutical companies like most countries do. They have become bandits by raising medical necessary drugs at an alarming rate.

Im for cleaning up the government and getting rid of the hypocrites like NEWT Gingrich, who is separated and living apart from his current wife, Marianne. This will be his second divorce after dumping his first wife after she underwent serious cancer surgery. Remember, he wrapped himself in moral purity. Gingrich, is not the only politician who preaches so-called family value for others and ignores those principles of household peace himself. The state of his marriage would be none of our business if he hadn't been so agressive in his crusade to demolish his opponents as morally inferior.

What is to become of the family-values scam when so many prominent advocates like Bob Barr, a leader of the GOP Drive to impeach Clinton who lectures piously for immoral behavoir on the evils of homosexuallity, feminism, and abortion. He would ban abortion. with no exception. Yet his wife says that he willingly drove her to a clinic for an abortion during their marriage.

Evangelist Pat Robertson, as resposible as anyone for political moralizing craze, senses that its day may have run its course. Last year he gave up the presidency of the The Christian Coalition and sold his goody two-shoes Family Channel to Ruport Murdock, a media baron, famous for exploiting sex to get viewers. Robertson took Murdock's money and ran, leaving our morals to take care of themselves I hate these type of Hypocrites. Its time to change the subject. Tax cuts, anyone?

But as people get to know Lazio, she'll sink like a stone,' says the source, adding that Lazio will have more appeal than Mrs. Clinton will in the vote-rich New York suburbs."
     But those who have known the Clintons longest -- "known" in the sense of watching them work their greed and grasp on unsuspecting electorates -- think the pol likely to inflict the most damage is Miss Hillary herself. Her poll numbers have been sinking without Mr. Lazio's presence in the race, despite (or because of) her famous "listening tour" of upstate New York.
     This has to be particularly disheartening to her handlers. Unless your name is George with a dubya, you can count on losing a bit of your luster and gloss from the minute you announce your candidacy. Voters are human, most of them, and it's only human to be not so sure you really want something (or someone) when you finally get it, and Miss Hillary, not to be ungallant, does not wear particularly well.
     She likes her media celebrity, the gift of her husband's presidency, and she knows that defeated candidates have the shelf life of a shrimp. To be a defeated candidate doomed to fade into the sunset with a past president who is likely to go down the nation's memory hole at the speed of light would be the fate worse than death for an ambitious former first lady who desperately wants to keep herself in the media glare as a feminist icon.
     The next few months will not be kind to the Clintons. The president's days have numbers on them, numbers that soon will shrink into mere double digits. Already no one cares what he does. Monica could deliver the pizza to his pantry in nothing but her thong, and we might not notice. Soon Ken Starr will submit his final report, no doubt couched in the passive voice beloved of timid lawyers, even timid lawyers with fraudulent reputations as tough guys, and it will splash into the Senate race in New York at the velocity of, umm, an old shoe, landing in the punch bowl.
     Miss Hillary's handlers have kept the reporters away from her so far, and this has kept the tough questions away from her as well. The reputation the New York reporters have as pit bulls is no doubt exaggerated, but soon she'll become vulnerable to collies and cocker spaniels. She knows that better than anyone. Nita Lowey should hang on to her begging bowl.

CORNISH, N.H. (AP) � Vice President Al Gore urged Americans to protect the nation's environment for future generations, but a state official who accompanied him complained about special treatment after four billion gallons of water was released into the Connecticut River to ensure that his canoe would not run aground during a photo opportunity.

Gore spoke about the environment after the presidential candidate went canoeing Thursday with a fellow Democrat, New Hampshire Gov. Jeanne Shaheen.

Local utility officials said they were asked by the Secret Service and the Connecticut River Joint Commission to release water from a dam to raise the level of the river, according to a story in Friday's editions of The Washington Times.

"They won't release the water for the fish when we ask them to, but somehow they find themselves able to release it for a politician,'' complained John Kassel, director of the Vermont Department of Natural Resources, who accompanied Gore on the trip.

"The only reason they did this was to make sure the vice president's canoe didn't get stuck,'' the Times quoted Kassel as saying.

Gore spokesman Chris Lehane said no one on the campaign staff asked for the water to be released.

The river, as one of 14 designated an American Heritage River, qualifies for special federal money. Gore announced that $819,000 had been earmarked for various projects related to the river.

This picture likely will become Algores version of the Dukkakis in a tank (with Helmet) picture. The Democrats better find a new candidate FAST if they want to be competitive.

Simplify the tax code? Most of the legislation over the years is to help people get credits and breaks and stimulate the economy starts and ends in Congress and if passed ends up in the tax code. So, Since 1913, every tax break is is put into (codified) in the tax code and US Treasury Regulation. It would take just 5-6 years just to study how to overhaul the tax code and - 5 more years to change it.By that time most businesses and individuals would be so fearful of the consequences it would put on us. And probably bring on a great big depression, honest. Not know ing how to plan and know the tax conquences would bankrupt firms just on Tax and Accounting Fees. Imagine Y2K type problems happening every month or so and trying to check on it and correct suspected problems. This is Pandoras box. Its better to fix Campaign Finance Laws and modernize the Educational System. Better high tech classes and smaller classes. MOre authority for teachers.

ACCIDENT investigators are probing John F Kennedy Jr's fitness to fly the aircraft in which he died with his wife and sister-in-law off Martha's Vineyard.

They will attempt to determine if Kennedy broke American Federal Aviation Authority medical regulations by taking off while suffering the effects of a broken ankle.

Doctors removed the cast from his leg the day before his fatal flight and it is not known if he was certified fit to fly. Several pilots have suggested that the heavy Piper Saratoga aircraft would have been difficult to control if Kennedy lacked the strength to push down on the rudder controls with both feet.

Kennedy, who was seen limping by a fellow pilot while walking to the plane at a New Jersey airport, had broken his ankle while paragliding six weeks ago. On the day of crash, his wife Carolyn had expressed concern at his fitness to fly, telling a New York shop assistant: "He's just had the cast taken off his leg. I don't know if he's ready to fly again."

Wreckage recovered from the seabed backs the theory that Kennedy lost control of the aircraft and plunged it into a rapid dive from which he could not recover. The Piper was found lying on its back, with both wings stripped from the fuselage.

While a full accident report is not due for at least six months, experts believe that they could know within days if mechanical failure caused the crash. Kennedy, who had held a pilot's licence for just over a year, also lacked a qualification to fly using only cockpit instruments.

Other pilots flying in the area on the night of the crash reported that the heat haze was so dense that Martha's Vineyard was invisible less than three miles from the airport. Radar records show that Kennedy turned sharply twice away from the island in the minutes before the crash, suggesting he had become disoriented.

Provisional post mortem results show that all three died instantly on impact. Kennedy and the two Bessette sisters were cremated hours after the post mortem and their ashes were scattered at sea. The full coroner's report is expected to cover the extent to which his ankle injury had healed.

Lawyers from both families will this week also turn their attention to resolving the couple's estate. It is not known if Kennedy, 38, had left a will, but the death of his wife means that most of his $50 million fortune will revert to the family, most probably his sister, Caroline.

There is also speculation that the Bessette family could launch a claim for damages against the Kennedy estate if pilot error is held to have caused the accident. Lauren Bessette has a surviving twin sister and both parents are still alive.

One issue resolved yesterday was the fate of the couple's dog, Friday. The Kennedys were devoted to the four-year-old black and white mongrel, which usually joined them on flights. It was feared that Friday, who has not been seen for a week, had perished in the crash. However, it was reported last night that the dog is safe with relatives.
