"Did she [Libby] indeed propose a law regarding this? Or are you persecuting her for speaking out about her Christian beliefs? Surely you'd never do that!"
Come on Stoner, we are not into persecuting anyone for their Christian beliefs, or any other religious beliefs. We heard this discussion on a talk show. People were not too happy about Scripture readings in Congress. Church is the right place for that.

"I just think you guys are way too paranoid about this stuff."
No way, Stoner, we still have vivid memories of being forced into prayers and rituals of the dominant religion.
"If you ever actually hear of a bill that would codify favoritism toward a particular religion or church then let me know. I'll be the first one in line to protest and have it struck down by the Supreme Court! "
Well.....you have clearly earned our respect for that position.

"But if your aim is to eliminate religious beliefs in the halls of Congress"
Stoner, nobody wants to eliminate religious beliefs, and if their beliefs are deeply held, nobody can.

Message: Hillary Doubles Aid to Honduras!
Hillary Rodham Clinton announced a doubling of U.S. aid yesterday to the hurricane-ravaged countries of Central America during a rapid tour of the region.

Calling Hurricane Mitch "the worst natural disaster in this hemisphere that we have record of," Clinton said the new U.S. total is now more than $250 million.

Speaking in the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa, Clinton detailed the latest aid plans - adding 16 new helicopters to the 39 already in the region and boosting U.S. troop strength in the area to 5,600 from 1,300.

She announced $55 million in additional military-based aid, such as road-building, medical detachments and water purification, and $51 million more in food aid.

The United States also will cancel two years of debt payments owed by Honduran and Nicaragua - about $54 million worth, she said.

"People were not too happy about Scripture readings in Congress. Church is the right place for that. "

With all due respect, who are you to decide where speaking out about your beliefs does or does not belong? Free speech means exactly that, whether it makes people happy or not! I still maintain that until someone tries to legislate something there is simply no grounds for complaint. You have no right to censor what people say. It's a First Amendment issue plain and simple. If we begin censoring speech in Congress where else can we begin to censor certain kinds of speech? What kinds of speech should be censored? Do you really want to open up that can of worms?

Now I think we finally hit a point of agreement; If the Congress put it in the "House Rules" that they read scripture I'd put that on basically the same level as legislation and would object. Glad to hear we actually agree on some points (as scary as that may be).

On another subject; Has hearing the Lewinsky/Tripp tapes changed your opinions of either of them? Also, being male I'm just curious, do women in general really go on and on about shopping and the people in the office like that? I've never had the opportunity to hear this kind of conversation before.
(Sub-thought: If the President had been female and had been cheating she'd never have gotten caught. No "stains", no gossipy telephone conversations of the guy and his best friend to tape and probably no cigars. Hmmm...)

Also, I think Monica should write a nice big "thank you" note to Linda and Ken for making her a millionaire! Oh, to be rich and famous at 25(?)! By the time she's 30 no one will even remember how she got that way.

I thought liberals were out of touch/clueless but this takes the cake! This may come as a shock to you, SFLiberals, but Congress has always started each session with a prayer!!!! Maybe you should watch CSPAN once and in while - each session of congress starts with a prayer and - heaven forbid - congress has a paid chaplain on staff.

But if we continue to let them get away with their brand of "morality" next thing we know the dominant religion will be demanding prime time in Congress for their morals which are centered primarily on sex. They will demand that lying about blowjobs takes priority over issues like social security, health care, environment, etc., and will drag us all into spending billions of dollars looking for sexual sin by any means, legal or illegal, to the detriment of all other issues vital to our needs.

That's the price you pay when you allow one religious culture to dominate.

From Ken Starr's opening statement to the House Judiciary Committee:

The evidence suggests that the misuse of presidential authority occurred in the following 10 ways:

First. The evidence suggests that the president made a series of premeditated false statements under oath in his civil deposition on Jan. 17, 1998. The president had taken an oath to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. By making false statements under oath, the president, the chief executive of our nation, failed to adhere to that oath and to his presidential oath to faithfully execute the laws.

Second. The evidence suggests that, apart from making false statements under oath, the president engaged in a pattern of behavior during the Jones litigation to thwart the judicial process. The president reached an agreement with Ms. Lewinsky that each would make false statements under oath. He provided job assistance to Ms. Lewinsky at a time when the Jones case was proceeding and Ms. Lewinsky's truthful testimony would have been harmful. He engaged in an apparent scheme to conceal gifts that had been subpoenaed from Ms. Lewinsky. He coached a potential witness, his own secretary Betty Currie, with a false account of relevant events.

Those acts constitute a pattern of obstruction that is fundamentally inconsistent with the president's duty to faithfully execute the laws.

Third. The evidence suggests that the president participated in a scheme at his deposition in which his attorney, in his presence, deceived a United States district judge in an effort to cut off questioning about Ms. Lewinsky. The president did not correct his attorney's false statement. A false statement to a federal judge in order to prevent relevant questioning is an obstruction of the judicial process.

Fourth. The evidence suggests that on Jan. 23, 1998, after the criminal investigation had become public, the president made false statements to his Cabinet and used his Cabinet as unwitting surrogates to publicly support the president's false story.

Fifth. The evidence suggests that the president, acting in a premeditated and calculated fashion, deceived the American people on Jan. 26 and on other occasions when he denied a relationship with Ms. Lewinsky.

Sixth. The evidence suggests that the president, after the criminal investigation became public, made false statements to his aides and concocted false alibis that these government employees repeated to the grand jury. As a result, the grand jury received inaccurate information.

Seventh. Having promised the American people to cooperate with the investigation, the president refused six invitations to testify to the grand jury. Refusing to cooperate with a duly authorized federal criminal investigation is inconsistent with the general statutory duty imposed on all executive branch employees to cooperate with criminal investigations. It also is inconsistent with the president's duty to faithfully execute the laws.

Eighth. The president and his administration asserted three different governmental privileges to conceal relevant information from the federal grand jury. The privilege assertions were legally baseless in these circumstances. They were inconsistent with the actions of Presidents Carter and Reagan in similar circumstances. And they delayed and impeded the investigation.

Ninth. The president made false statements under oath to the grand jury on Aug. 17, 1998. The president again took an oath to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. The evidence demonstrates that the president failed to adhere to that oath and thus to his presidential oath to faithfully execute the laws.

Tenth. The evidence suggests that the president deceived the American people in his speech on Aug. 17 by stating that his testimony had been legally accurate.

In addition to those 10 points, it bears mention that well before January 1998, the president used government resources and prerogatives to pursue his relationship with Monica Lewinsky. The evidence suggests that the president used his secretary Betty Currie, a government employee, to facilitate and conceal the relationship with Monica Lewinsky. The president used White House aides and the United States ambassador to the United Nations in his effort to find Ms. Lewinsky a job at a time when it was foreseeable – even likely – that she would be a witness in the Jones case. And the president used a government attorney – Bruce Lindsey – to assist his personal legal defense during the Jones case.

In short, the evidence suggests that the president repeatedly used the machinery of government and the powers of his office to conceal his relationship with Monica Lewinsky from the American people, from the judicial process in the Jones case, and from the grand jury.

Sounds like he nailed it down pretty good to me.

Dash resigns after Starr testifies in impeachment hearings

WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 —  While Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr’s marathon impeachment hearing session did not appear to have dramatically altered the political landscape, it did trigger the resignation on Friday of his ethics adviser, who said Starr had “unlawfully intruded on the power of impeachment” by becoming an advocate.  MORE...

And for the rest of the story:

In his two-page letter, which begins ``Dear Ken,'' Dash said that ``my decision to leave has nothing whatsoever to do with the many unfounded and misinformed attacks on your conduct as independent counsel. Through most of your tenure, I have been fully informed by you and your staff on all major decisions. ... Where I disagreed, you showed your willingness to be open to my advice and you came to different decisions.'' Dash said that Starr and his staff had conducted themselves ``with integrity and professionalism.''

Starr said he was saddened by Dash's departure and respected his adviser's position but added, ``Reasonable minds can differ. ``I love Sam. I respect him. I admire him. He's a total man of principle. I have really profited from his judgment. I think it was a matter of principle. It was so important to him,'' Starr said outside his home.

Again, the Libs ignore the key point in favor of a soundbite in their favor. Ken Starr is a great man. Sam Dash is a great man. Rarely do great men agree in all cases.

Democrat Sam Dash in what looks like a pre-planned action resigned the day after Starr made the Democrats look foolish. Many believe that Democrat Dash’s resignation was planned by the Democrat propaganda machine in an attempt to divert attention from Democrat failures and the childish and foolish way they are handling the impeachment hearings. Dash stated his reason for resigning was that Starr testified before the House Impeachment hearings. Dash’s action looks phony and pre-planned because Starr’s appearance was planned weeks ago yet Dash remained silent. Democrat Dash’s action is that much more phony when you realized that Starr appeared on the request of the Democrats! The Democrats were obviously trying to setup Starr but the light of truth has found its way to their scheme. The Democrats actions make the United States government look more like a banana republic than the superpower that is supposed to be.

But then, Ken Starr is not known for being critical of anyone on a personal level, just the legal level...

Message: This is a great moment in history and we are torn between a great moment in our business as well, hence our silence. We figured history will go on without us but business opportunities sometimes come only once. We have not seen anything on TV, a little news on the radio and most of the news on the Internet and in the papers. So we are a little out of touch.

But we did manage to catch one suggestion by Arlen Specter that we liked, and which many conservatives will probably like too. So in the interest of good relations here it is:

We would go along with the concept that we end this whole impeachment mess now. Leave our president alone to run this country until the end of his term and then, when he leaves office, to continue with the perjury charge in an ordinary court of law.

This suggestion seems to solve a lot of problems for us.
1. Punishing Clinton during his term of office is also punishing us, and the rest of the world. Republicans have punished us enough, to the detriment of too many issues and crises that are far more important that lying over blowjobs.
2. We always had a problem with justifying perjury. It is clear that Starr trapped Clinton into a Catch-22 situation. He was damned if he did not tell the truth, and was damned if he did. What to do? We were asked that question early August and responded that we would have refused to answer that question on that basis that it was an invasion of our privacy and unconstitutional. No doubt the judge would have thrown us into jail, but that's the route we would have taken.

We would have admired Clinton if he had done the same thing. The judge would have been hard put to throw him into jail. His lawyers could have made a test case out of it and established that prosecutors cannot force us to reveal our private sexual natures.

Starr Ethics Adviser Sam Dash Quits

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former Senate Watergate Counsel Sam Dash abruptly resigned today as Kenneth Starr's ethics adviser to protest the independent counsel's decision to testify in the House impeachment hearing against President Clinton.
``You have violated your obligations under the independent counsel statute and have unlawfully intruded on the power of impeachment,'' Dash said in a letter to Starr that was obtained by The Associated Press.
``I resign for a fundamental reason,'' Dash said. ``Against my strong advice, you decided to depart from your usual professional decision-making by accepting the invitation of the House Judiciary Committee to appear ... and serve as an aggressive advocate for the proposition that the evidence ... demonstrates that the president committed impeachable offenses.''

Ken Starr has done the world an enormous favor. Ken Starr has proven once and for all, when he claims that he is vindicating the rule of law, he is seeking to make the world safe for hypocrisy. Ken Starr has proven once and for all, that corrupt authorities who suborn perjury are guilty of obstructing justice. Ken Starr has proven once and for all, that corrupt, career Justice Department officials are still paying tribute to the felonious legacy of J. Edgar Hoover.
Ken Starr has proven once and for all, that the capacity to manipulate the court system is responsible for covering up, rather than exposing the truth.
Ken Starr has proven once and for all, how easy it is to fill our prisons with innocent people. Ken Starr has proven once and for all, that bragging about the capacity to win in court is like being thankful that Jim McDougal is dead and is consequently denied the right to every appeal. Ken Starr has proven once and for all, that "the facts" are a figment of his vast, hitherto unfathomable capacity to pervert justice.
Ken Starr has proven once and for all, that it is simply not possible to have an Independent Special Prosecutor as long as Grand Inquisitors exploit the Courts. Ken Starr has proven once and for all, that he would rather defend Paula Jones and Linda Tripp, rather than the duties and obligations of the President of the United States. Ken Starr has proven once and for all, that he can hide behind the practise and policy of legal manoeuvres, but he cannot find an independent jury to support a grand plot to topple a President.

We are thankful for the Republican losses in Congress. We are thankful for Democrats standing up for themselves and their issues all over the country.

We are thankful that the small-minded witch hunters did not win this round, although we suspect they will be back. We are grateful to Sam Dash for quitting and thereby reinforcing the majority opinion that Ken Starr really does have it in for Clinton. We are grateful that a small and warped radical Christian Right has not imposed its sense of morality and sin upon our land.

And finally we are thankful for this Forum, where we can all express our opinions freely in the great ol' USA! We are grateful for the editors of this forum who have the good sense to kick the foul-mouthed, hate-filled message posters to this forum. Keep up the good work! Amen.

PS. I am not so thankful for the way some people express their opinions. I like logic, I like to debate, but by the rules. Hurling epithets and calling people ugly names only reflects upon the writers.

It appears that things have returned to normal here on the forum. Hillary (the smartest woman in America, the woman who made $100,000.00 on a $1000.00 "investment", the woman who remains with her "man" after several, if not several dozen, "affairs") is lauded as a hero. The traffic has dropped to near zero (despite the claim of "2000 visitors a day"). The messages have deteriorated into Christian Bashing and derision of those who still hold the Constitution and Rule of Law dear. I only hope that the end comes swiftly and clearly so that those who pretend to love this nation are shown for what they are: shallow, immoral, weak posers who can excuse any weakness in their leaders so that they might themselves be "great" like them. Time will indeed tell....

Message: We're back from an extented thanksgiving vacation. Hope yours went well. About the traffic. While it has dropped it is not anywhere near zero. Hundreds of people come into this forum but do not write. We don't know the reason for this. By comparison, the New York Times gets millions of visitors every day but if you go to their forums the participants are few, and much less in proportion to the smaller number of visitors that come in here, so we're doing OK.

"The messages have deteriorated into Christian Bashing and derision of those who still hold the Constitution and Rule of Law dear."
Oh, come on Stoner... you see Christian bashing, and we see a lot of Clinton bashing, HC forum bashing, Editors of the HC forum bashing, etc. We ALL hold the Constitution and Rule of Law dear. You don't have a copyright on that. Why do you look at us through such prejudiced eyes? The main difference I can see between Conservatives and Liberals is that Conservatives tend to be self-righteous and believe they are superior to us. The Liberals perspective is that we are all one family with different views. We usually consider the Liberal position more valid, more progressive and more visionary, of course, but we are also aware that there should be a balance and all opinions should be taken into consideration, which is why all of your messages remain on these forums.

Regarding Hillary Clinton's tremendous rise in popularity, you will note that some very flattering statements have been printed in THE TIMES of London. This is a right-wing publication owned by Rupert Murdoch. Stoner, you should give credit where credit is due: Hillary should be admired for her fortitude during Lewinskygate. Most people would have gone into therapy or hiding after what Hillary suffered this year. She tore up the campaign trail instead, and she delivered -- big time! If you factor Hillary Clinton out of the November 3rd elections the Republicans would have won. Yes, Stoner, it's hard to believe that ONE PERSON made all the difference, but it's true. If Hillary had a nervous breakdown, filed for divorce, badmouthed Clinton or got into the fray it would have been a vastly different story. Hillary was the difference between a Republican win and a Democratic landslide! Give credit where credit is due -- that's the Christian thing to do.

To compensate for this exciting ticket Hillary Clinton will be forced into the race. She will be pitted against Al Gore in the primaries and will win by a landslide. There will be a Clinton-Gore ticket again, only this time with Hillary as president.

Since the economy will be in very good shape in 2000, people will vote Democrat to preserve the status quo.

Hillary Clinton will be president of the USA in 2000.

Hillary & Barbara Boxer - Hillary & Tom Vilsack

Hillary & Tammy Baldwin - Hillary & Charles Schumer

GIVE 'EM HILLARY
Jubilant campaign rallies showed she could win sympathy.
Results showed she can also win elections

And she delivered. Of course, not every candidate she stumped for won-but well over half did, many in squeakers. " Her impact was electric," says Hank Morris, a consultant who helped Democrat Charles Schumer beat Alfonse DAmato in New York. "We trended up every time she was here." Hillary roped in $1 million for Schumer and $1.6 million for Barbara Boxer, who won a close Senate race in California. She played a key role in Tom Vilsack last-minute shocker over former G.O.P. Congressman Jim Lightfoot in the Iowa Govemor's race. The Vilsack campaign crested when Hillary was there. "The polls were showing a dead heat, and then she brought this burst of enthusiasm," says David Axelrod, a Vilsack operative.

She helped in part because her almost evangelical rallies made great TV. In Illinois, "she got more free media than both Senate candidates," marvels Tony Podesta, campaign manager for Senator Carol Moseley-Braun. Some folks came out of loyalty; others exhibited a daytime-talk-show curiosity about the Hillary Calvary. In any event, her speeches were crammed. In San Francisco two weeks ago, Boxer's people booked a room for 600 for Hillary. Double that number showed up (and they paid toee her). A Rhode Island group tarried four to hear and cheer her. In California, Hillary's phone message startled many of the women who got home from work to hear (the Boxer campaign targeted 775,000 men with phone banks). Some who then to see her at public events would "I got a message from you at home!" Nationally, Hillary's approval ratings never been so high-up to 70%, double level they reached after the health-care fiasco and the reports of her cosmic communing with Eleanor Roosevelt. So how did suddenly become the most powerful in America? For one thing, she turned out to be right on some key issues.

Republicans and reporters mocked her she began the year charging that the President was the victim of "a vast right wing conspiracy." But as the plotters crawled out onto the stage, the phrase started to ring true to some. Later, as paperback versions of the Starr report described the precise topography of her husband's infidelity, she focused not on the humiliation but on how to get out from under it. Privately she fueled a fight-back strategy against Kenneth Starr. Publicly, she defined poise. Politics, she told crowd after crowd, remains a noble pursuit. Her silence about inner life reinforced a public-private boundary the public was beginning to feel had frayed too much.

Hillary bounces back from scandal
First lady rides nation’s distaste for impeachment to new heights of popularity

Out of the crucible of Washington scandal and the minefields of partisan politics, Hillary Rodham Clinton has emerged — not only as a survivor but as a potent new political force for a Democratic Party riding a national wave of distaste toward the impeachment of her husband.

Hillary Clinton has given no public indication of what she plans to do after her husband’s term expires in two years, assuming that the impeachment proceedings against him fail. A number of Democratic consultants believe she could win the Illinois Senate seat if she decided to run, but she has told friends that after her experience in Washington, she has no appetite to become a candidate. These observers say she is more likely to remain active within the administration on issues like education, health care and international women’s rights and play a central roll as a campaigner in the run-up to the 2000 elections.        “She’ll be very much in demand,” says Schrum. “I think she’s going to have a very big impact in the next couple of years." REPORTER WITH DOCUMENTS CRAZED ABOUT LEAK

**Exclusive**

WASHINGTON -- The Clinton administration is facing the most massive leak of classified foreign policy documents since the publication of the Pentagon papers more than two decades ago during the Vietnam war. The documents, totaling more than 20,000 pages, have been obtained by reporter Murray Waas, the DRUDGE REPORT first revealed last week.

Waas on Sunday night was said to be "bitterly angry" over the leak regarding the leak.

"He is furious that word got out," a close friend to Waas explained late Sunday night in Washington. "He has been holding the documents close after showing them to two Washington newspaper editors."

The leaked documents include a history of the secret negotiations between the U.S. and North Korea, according to sources who have read them, describing the failed policy of trying to buy off North Korea to forego its nuclear weapons policy. They describe in great detail the intelligence and policy failures that led to the detonations of nuclear weapons by India and Pakistan this year.

Most embarrassing, the papers appear to corroborate, according to sources who have read them, allegations by a former U.N. arms inspector that the Clinton administration concealed from Congress and the public details regarding Saddam Hussein's ambitious program to develop nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons.

The papers also reveal new details on the Clinton policy towards China in which the White House allowed ballistic missile technology exports to China at the behest of wealthy Democratic campaign contributors.

The massive leak of classified foreign policy documents caught senior White House officials by surprise.

"The impeachment proceedings are going to have seemed like a picnic, before we get though with this," one White House official said.

During the 1992 presidential campaign, both Clinton and Gore often praised Waas exclusives exposing the Bush administration's Iraq policy, which involved the leaks of thousands of pages of classified papers regarding the Gulf war.

It is not clear when Waas will begin to unload on Clinton. Some in Washington speculate that left-wing Waas does not want to write a major expose about the Clinton administration in the midst of the impeachment hearings, fueling the flames for conservatives.

"He's bitterly angry," says a close associate. "Conservatives have been spreading rumors to pressure him to do it. And now his White House contacts are now extremely angry and have stopped talking to him because he is doing it!"

Nothing that would hold up in court anyway. And I'm sure anyone would have collected classified material from the FBI to blackmail their enemies and use the FBI and IRS to ruin Billy Dale's life just because he was in the way of Clintons Arkansas cronies.

Whereas the president is just a liar... Lets go fishin'! Seriously, they've been after the Clinton White House for this stuff for a long time. You guys can't have it both ways; if lies about sex (read: perjury in a Sexual harassment case and in front of a Federal Grand Jury) ain't enough to impeach him on then we'll get him on a more serious crime (there are so many to choose from!) Unfortunately, the "public" (read: ignorant, intellectually lazy, WrestleMaina fans) yawns at more serious crimes like missle technology transfer for cash or fraudulant land deals as long as they're fat and happy. The public interest in the TailGate is all that pushed it along anyway! A truly sad statement.

If it can be proven that Clinton knowingly broke current campaign finance laws would that be serious enough to impeach? Or would you give this guy a pass no matter what? (Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me (much) if it turned out he personally whacked Vince Foster for his affair with Hillary. Would Murder be enough?!) Those of us who look at the overall picture of this president (the multitude of dirty dealings, half truth's, outright lies and skirting of the law over the last decade) see a very scary picture of a totally corrupt yet charismatic politician. Zippy, we have our eyes open. We knew who Clinton was when we elected him out of a bunch of other imperfect beings. Since the beginning of this forum it always intrigued me that the right-wing believes that we can't see Clinton, and if they could just force us to "accept the truth" we would immediately impeach him and put another imperfect, less charismatic, less competent person in his place. Life is not perfect, Zippy, life is a TRADE-OFF. You trade one thing or person for another thing or person. You weigh your options and decide which trade-off would be in the best interest of the country. So stop trying to bang Clinton's crimes into our heads as though we are blinded to them. We have our eyes wide open.

Two factors are in this push-pull situation, Zippy, the first is that we elected Clinton flaws and all and we want him to serve out his term, BUT the second is EVEN MORE IMPORTANT, which the right-wing have a LOT of trouble comprehending. I have not met a single right-winger that can see it from our point of view, and that is: If we gave in and impeached Clinton that would set a precedent for the future. Media Spin Is Covering Up The Facts

Media Spin Is Covering Up The Facts

Media spin is disguising and distorting the facts that Americans need to know. Let's puncture some of the spin.

Spin: The Republicans lost the 1998 Congressional elections. Fact: The Republicans won the 1998 Congressional elections by electing a majority in both Houses of Congress for the third straight time, the first time this has happened in our lifetime.

In the 435 House races, 500,000 more people voted for Republican candidates than for Democratic candidates. In the gubernatorial races, 4.5 million more people voted for Republicans than for Democrats, keeping the majority of Governors' mansions in Republican hands.

Spin: The 1998 elections were a victory for "moderate," "centrist" candidates. It was "the year of the moderate" as candidates "rushed to the center." Fact: The spectacular Senate winners were pro-life conservatives Peter Fitzgerald (R-IL), Jim Bunning (R-KY) and Mike Crapo (R-ID), plus pro-abortion liberals Charles Schumer (D-NY), Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Patty Murray (D-WA), all ideological partisans, not a "moderate" among them.

When Peter Fitzgerald won the Illinois Republican primary in March, defeating "moderate" pro-abortion Loleta Didrickson who had been anointed by the Party establishment and Bob Dole, the liberal media shed copious crocodile tears that the Republicans had kicked away their best chance to defeat Carol Moseley-Braun. Typical of the reaction of all the pundits was William Schneider's comment that Didrickson was "the perfect candidate, a moderate woman who supports gun control and abortion rights." The voters disagreed.

Spin: Republican adherence to the pro-life cause is a loser. Fact: Smart Democrats are starting to run pro-life candidates because they know it is a winner.

Three new Democratic Congressmen ran as pro-life conservatives: Ken Lucas in Kentucky, Ronnie Shows in Mississippi, and David Phelps in Illinois. Other pro-life Democrats came close to winning by running more pro-life than their pro-life Republican opponents: Marjorie McKeithen in Louisiana (who almost unseated Rep. Richard Baker) and Glenn Poshard (who ran a tight race for Governor of Illinois against George Ryan).

Ken Lucas's campaign material, mailed out by the Kentucky Democratic Party, described him as "a pro-life, pro-family Christian. . . . No matter how small -- no matter what stage of life -- Ken will fight to make sure life is respected and our children -- born and unborn -- are protected."

Spin: The Democratic gains in the House are a gain for the liberals. Fact: The Democratic Leadership Council claims that more than half of the 23 newly elected Democrats are DLC's "New Democrats" who want to move their Party's ideology away from liberalism, and some of them ran on agendas that are pro-business, fiscally responsible, anti-abortion, and pro-school prayer.

Spin: The gender gap bodes a bleak future for Republicans because women vote for liberal, pro-abortion Democrats. Fact: The gender differential depends on variables other than ideology.

In Illinois, Peter Fitzgerald got 57 percent of the women's vote over Carol Moseley-Braun; in Texas, Governor George W. Bush got 75 percent of the women's vote. Women employed outside the home voted 55-42 percent Democratic, while women who are not employed outside the home voted 52-42 percent Republican.

Spin: Clinton's harangues about Social Security were a big reason why Republicans lost seats in Congress. Fact: Voters age 60 and over weren't fooled; they voted 55-45 percent for Republican candidates.

However, the middle-age voters (aged 45 to 59, who are paying high Social Security taxes and worrying they will never get back what they pay in) voted Democratic, 52-48 percent. That should send a message to Republicans because this age group had previously voted 53-47 percent for Republicans.

Spin: After the election, the Republicans sank into "chaos" and engaged in "bloodletting" in their contest for new leaders. Fact: Newt Gingrich's prompt and graceful exit paved the way for the orderly and harmonious election of new leaders, including the unanimous election of the new Speaker.

Spin: The 1998 elections prove that the people want Congress to abandon its plans for impeachment. Fact: Clinton was not on the ballot, and there is no evidence that his behavior was the reason why any Republican or Democratic candidate was elected or defeated.

Spin: Impeachment is too drastic a punishment for Clinton's admittedly shameful behavior. Fact: Impeachment is exactly the proper and constitutional remedy because impeachment is merely a formal resolution by the House that Clinton's behavior is unacceptable (which it is).

Impeachment doesn't convict him, doesn't remove him from office, and doesn't send him to jail. After impeachment, it becomes the Senate's task to decide whether removal from office is the punishment that fits the crime.

The clearest message of the recent election is that Republicans must stand for something in order to win. Any ambivalence by Republicans about impeaching a President who has obstructed justice will only cause a repeat of the disappointments of the last election.

Zippy, we have our eyes open. We knew who Clinton was when we elected him our of a bunch of other imperfect beings.

It would REWARD those who INVADED OUR PRIVACY! Hundreds of District Attorneys and Special Prosecutors would COPY CAT Starr's excesses and violate our personal privacy even worse than Starr, if that is possible. They would have the green light to violate, not only Democrats, but Republicans too, like you Zippy. Isn't your right to privacy more important than your obsession with getting Clinton? Clinton is only one man. When he is long gone from this planet, our right to privacy will still be intact, but if Starr prevailed then we would lose our right to privacy forever. No, no, no.... you still don't get it. Let's roll the camera back and start again... Clinton lies under oath. Starr behaves honorably and proves that Clinton lied. Starr does that without illegally taping conversations, torturing innocent witnesses, manipulating elections, subpoenaing the credit cards, books, bank accounts of innocent people, lying to witnesses to force confessions, and having no financial or emotional ties to the right-wing. In other words if the Republican Party had found themselves an impartial Independent Counsel who behaved in a sane and rational manner, like Sam Dash, Clinton would be in big trouble. THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE ZIPPY -- We cannot set a precedent by rewarding Starr's excesses. Clinton is not above the law, but by the same token he is not BELOW the law either. Any low-life criminal who proves to the court that the evidence was obtained by illegal means goes free, so why are you making an exception with our president?

We keep wondering when Republicans will get the message, but with people like Phyllis Schlafly convincing you that losing is actually winning we Democrats will not have to do much to take control of the House and the Senate in 2000.

Dear Phyllis, keep up the good work for another two years, girl. Don't stop. You are going in the right direction to further convince the people in 2000 that two more years will have gone by and soon we will be in 2000 and Republicans still won't get it. Very few will vote for a party to run this country that doesn't get the message. We keep thinking that any minute the light will go on but you keep digging a deeper and deeper hole for yourselves.

DRUDGE REPORT DECEMBER 04, 1998 02:59:08 UTC

JUDGE FINDS STARR'S AIDES DID NOT ABUSE

Friday's NEW YORK TIMES is set to report in late editions that Kenneth Starr's prosecutors did not forbid Monica Lewinsky to call her lawyer when they first confronted her at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Jan. 16, and in fact they gave her several opportunities to call anyone she chose, a federal district judge concluded.

"Contrary to that finding, issued last April but kept sealed until now, President Clinton's lawyers and House Democrats have argued that prosecutors mistreated Ms. Lewinsky by repeatedly refusing her the opportunity to call her lawyer," reports the paper's Don Van Natta, in a story to be posted on NEWYORKTIMES.COM shortly after 5:00 UTC.

"They maintain that the incident illustrates Starr's overzealousness, perhaps even misconduct... But Judge Johnson said lawyers and agents from Starr's office had not barred Ms. Lewinsky from calling her lawyer and had 'acted within the ethical rules in questioning Ms. Lewinsky without her attorney present.'"

At no point in his testimony did Starr mention the ruling -- subsequently upheld by an appellate court -- that had exonerated his office.

Starr's spokesman Charles Bakaly tells the paper: "This is an example where our prosecutors did not discuss rulings that would have helped us to respond to attacks against the office. We were prohibited from discussing it, because it was under seal, and we adhered to that."

The ruling by Judge Norma Holloway Johnson is part of a ream of documents ordered released this week by a federal appeals court.

James Kennedy, a White House spokesman, said late Thursday that lawyers had not reviewed the newly unsealed papers and would have no immediate comment.

Developing...

As so many of us have tried to point out before, Starr was never free to correct the torrent of outright lies comming from the White House and Clinton's Defenders. In time it will be proven just how wrong you are about Ken Starr. He's ten times more professional than those spin-meisters in the White House. He has to be in his line of work or people like Reno will shut him down toot-sweet!

I've matured....especially since I want to get the president. I believe lying is wrong now. Lying about sex is absolutely wrong, but it definitely OK to save us from the Communists. Lying is OK if the means justifies the end.

So I had affairs in my "indiscriminate youth" when I was 43, so what? I even broke up a family, but families are as not as important as getting the president.

Message: A person accused of perjury including the president, has a right to a fair trial before being found guilty. Futhermore, under the American judicial system, such a person is innocent of the charges unless he is tried for the crime, and convicted. Yet the Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee have declared the president guilty of perjury time and time again, based solely on Kenneth Starr's allegations.

For Representatives Tom DeLay and Lindsey Graham to assert, as they did on Sunday, that the president "is an unrepentant perjurer who should lose his job unless he changes his tone" is to prejudge the case. As Judiciary Committee members they should know better than that. Perhaps the House should impeach them as well?

You do not understand the constitutional duties of the congress nor do you understand the legal system – you do parrot the James Carville propaganda line that is targeted at naive people that simply do not understand. First, the president is a branch of government therefore he DOES NOT have the same rights or obligations of an individual citizen. The president CAN NOT be indicted because it would be one branch of government going against another (this issue is often debated but so far the presiding belief is the President must be impeached and removed from office before he can be indicted (or after his term is over) BTW - We have three branches of government: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. If the president was indicted it would pit the Executive branch against the Judicial – that is why the constitution spells out impeachment. As for your silly kangaroo court statement – that is complete BS and you are either ignorant or deliberately spreading propaganda. In an impeachment the House indicts for a trial in the Senate (please look up the meaning of the word indict). The House functions as a grand jury and their job is to see if a trail is warranted by seeing if there is any evidence. With Clinton the evidence is overwhelming that is why at least one article of impeachment is inevitable (5 Democrats have already defected from the Democrat propaganda machine and are going to vote for impeachment – that means impeachment is a forgone conclusion). After article(s) of impeachment are passed – THEN!!!!!!!!! the trial begins in the SENATE (see how STUPID your statement is!). Once the trail begins the president will be given the right to a fair trail (like you stated). My only question is are you ignorant of how the government works or are you deliberately spreading mistruth and propaganda. This is scary stuff when citizens actively participate in propaganda (read “The Rise and fall of the Third Reich” if you want better understanding of what propaganda leads to). If you are ignorant of how the government works – why do you flaunt you ignorance? Only in American do people believe that they can speak loudly of a subject they don’t understand. This has been a very bad year - a 7 month stonewall Clinton/White House campaign of lies – followed by the President being exposed as a cheap liar to the world – followed by the Democrat Propaganda machine declaring work on our legal system (James Carville: “It’s a Wahr, It’s a Wahr!!!!”) and the Democrat minions seem more then willing to participate in the propaganda machine. These are VERY scary times.

Hope in on the horizon – he is riding a white horse and has the initials. GWB carved on his saddle – I can almost here the cries of good honest Americans “GW Bush is coming, GW Bush is coming, flush the White House and make way for GW Bush”.

The scandal, dishonesty, and propaganda gets the darkest before the light (you can quote me)
